The Ancestors

Everyone standing behind Mia Josephine Mazza and Rocco Francesco Mazza — counted honestly, generation by generation, against the number there ought to be. 59 of them are named in the family's own file; the other 34 this archive proved from a register, act by act, and every one of them now has a page of their own.

This archive exists for two children born in Brisbane in 2017 and 2019. A pedigree drawn downward from an ancestor decides in advance which line matters. Drawn upward from them, it simply reports who is actually behind them — and, just as usefully, how much is missing.

The shape of that column is the whole story. The archive is complete for parents and grandparents, half complete for the three generations above, and then it falls off a cliff. Where it falls matters: on the family's file alone the sixth generation is 15.6%, and with the people this archive has read out of registers it is 34.4%. That difference is the register work, and it is why this page counts both numbers instead of one.

Two threads reach the ninth generation, not one. The Prostamo of Briatico are in the file and go furthest, to Franco Antonino Prostamo and Agnere Polito about 1697. The Arena and Costa of Scilla reach the ninth too — Filippo Arena the elder, Santa Ungaro, Giuseppe Costa and Giacoma Turco — and not one of them was in the export. They were read out of the Scilla registers, act by act, and this page reported them as nothing for as long as it counted only the file.

Half of the missing half at generation three is not Italian at all. It is the D'Arcy side, through the children's mother, which this archive carries only as far as her parents. That family has its own research and is not duplicated here.
