The Nicotra

Three days ago this line was two names on a Queensland death certificate. It now reaches generation six on both sides, crosses four comuni — and the man it is named for is still missing.

Where it started

Everything this archive knew about the Nicotra came from one Australian document: the 1963 Queensland death registration of Maria Nicotra , which names her parents as «John Nicotra» and «Venera Cassaneti». No dates, no places, no act — and one of those surnames does not exist in Italy. «Cassaneti» appears exactly once in the whole Queensland index, on that certificate, taken down from an informant at a Brisbane registry counter. The Sicilian form is CASSANITI, and a register searched for the other spelling returns nothing forever.

The line, as four acts give it

Read in the original, September 2026. Not one of these people is in the family's export with a date.

generation 6

Rosario Nicotra × Venera Murabito

Of MASCALI, both living and working there in October 1872 — he a bracciante, she a contadina. Named without «fu» in an act that writes «fu» for a witness two lines above, so the absence is a statement. Neither has been found in any register of any of the four towns.

Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20

generation 6

Gaetano Cassaniti × Maria Currenti

Of PIEDIMONTE ETNEO, and BOTH DEAD by October 1872 — «figlia del fu GAETANO, e di fu MARIA CURRENTI». Gaetano is also the father named in his daughter's birth entry of 1848, which is what ties the birth to the marriage.

Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20; Nati 1848 atto 45

generation 5

Giovanni Nicotra × Venera Cassaniti

Married at Piedimonte Etneo on 7 OCTOBER 1872 at nine in the morning. He thirty-one, a bracciante, «domiciliato e residente a MASCALI» and «nato a GIARRE»; she twenty-four, born at Piedimonte in 1848. The family's export calls them «John Nicotra» and «Venera Cassaneti» and gives neither a date.

Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20 and Matrimoni allegati fascicolo 20

generation 4

Maria Nicotra

Born at MASCALI on 8 DECEMBER 1875 at half past nine in the evening, in contrada Sopra Pietrafitta, and registered two days later by her father in person. Married Salvatore Mazza about 1900; widowed 1929; sailed to Sydney on 20 April 1962 at about eighty-six, to her sons; died at Brisbane in 1963 and lies at Nudgee.

Mascali, Nati 1875 atto 144

The join is not circular, which matters because «Giovanni Nicotra» is a common name. The family's own export — parsed long before any of this — gives Giovanni and Venera seven children, and one of them is a ROSARIO. A first son takes the paternal grandfather's name, and the paternal grandfather in the 1872 act is Rosario. This archive held the grandson's name for months and could not have derived the grandfather's from it.

What 255 read years have not found

Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito are named in one act and appear in no register.

The instrument is not the problem. Every one of these Tavole is alphabetical and names both parents, so the household would announce itself. What is being tested is whether the man's own statements about himself are true — he is trentuno in 1872 and ventotto in 1875, six years apart in three — and whether «nato a Giarre» means the comune or the district.

The wrong Nicotra, and the right shape

Twelve years of Riposto's marriage Tavole were read for exactly the row that would end this: Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito, who would hand over generation seven in a single line. That row is not there. What is there is one N entry across the twelve years, and it is a different man.

He is the Salvadore Nicotra whose children the Riposto birth sweep had already turned up — Alfio in May 1845, Rosa in November 1847 — without knowing where he came from. Now it is written: born at Giarre, married at Riposto, children registered at Riposto.

This is not Giovanni's father and this archive does not pretend it is. What it settles is the question behind the search. «Nato a Giarre» and «absent from Giarre's registers» stopped being a contradiction the moment a second man did both. Whether Rosario is Salvadore's brother is the obvious next thought and has no evidence at all behind it — two men of a surname in one district are not kin until an act says so, and this archive has been wrong about exactly that before.

255 read index years turned these up. They are kept because a surname that is present and never right is a different fact from a surname that is absent — and because the next reader will otherwise find them again.

ComuneSurnameFatherMotherSeenWhat it is
Riposto Nicotra Giuseppe Nicotra Angela Autieri 1847, 1848 Nicotra Rosa in November 1847 and Nicotra Leonardo on 26 December 1848
Riposto Nicotra Salvadore Nicotra Maria Barbagallo 1844, 1845, 1847 married Maria Barbagallo at Riposto in July 1844 (Matrimoni atto 39), and his own patria there is GIARRE. Children Alfio on 9 May 1845 and Rosa on 15 November 1847
Riposto Nicotra Francesco Nicotra — 1838 Nicotra Maria, entry 170; the mother's surname is not legible at band width
Giarre Nicotra Dr Don Alfio Nicotra Donna Angela Ligresti, then Donna Antonina Consoli 1838, 1844, 1846, 1848 ONE MAN, TWO MARRIAGES, TWO COMUNI. Son of Nicotra D. Giuseppe and Caltabiano D. Gioachina. Married Angela Ligresti at RIPOSTO on 23 April 1838 (Matrimoni atto 15) and Antonina Consoli at GIARRE on 19 August 1844 (Matrimoni atto 54) — the two acts name the same two parents, which is what joins them. Children Salvatore in November 1846 and Salvatore again in January 1848. AND HIS OWN PATRIA IS WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY IN THE TWO REGISTERS: «S. Giovanni» at Riposto, «Giarre» at Giarre
Mascali Nicotra Alfio Nicotra Carmela Sudieri 1840, 1842, 1847 THREE children at Mascali, not two: Venera 11 May 1840 (atto 33), GIUSEPPE 19 MAY 1842 (atto 20) and Maria 1847 (atto 69). Giuseppe was found only on the 7 October 2026 re-read — the original sweep cleared 1842 at the M-to-next-letter junction and never saw the N section, which is exactly the failure work-list row 180 was raised for
Giarre Nicotra Alfio Nicotra Rosa Pappalardo 1844 not seen in a register of their own — named as the GIARRE-born groom's parents in Riposto Matrimoni 1844 atto 39. The first ordinary, untitled Nicotra household this archive can put at Giarre
Giarre Nicotra Simone Nicotra Marianna Dadone 1820 Nicotra Rosaria, atto 198, 13 April 1820 — in the first year Giarre registered anything
Giarre Nicotra Rosario Nicotra Rosa Providenza 1820 Nicotra Carmela, atto 228, 1 May 1820. THE NAME IS RIGHT AND THE GENERATION IS NOT: Giovanni's father Rosario was a bracciante still working in 1872, and a man fathering a child in 1820 would be past seventy-five by then. A grandfather-generation namesake is exactly what Sicilian naming custom predicts, and custom is not a document
Giarre Nicotra Salvadore Nicotra Rosa La Spina 1838 named as the parents of NICOTRA ALFIO, who married Venera Cesaro at Giarre on 9 January 1838 (Matrimoni atto 2). Set beside Riposto Matrimoni 1844 — Nicotra Salvadore, patria GIARRE, son of NICOTRA ALFIO and Rosa Pappalardo — the two acts give an ALTERNATING ALFIO/SALVADORE descent at Giarre across three generations, which is exactly what Sicilian naming custom produces. NOT JOINED: the two mothers are both a Rosa and neither surname matches, and custom is not a document
Giarre Nicotra Salvadore Nicotra Anna Costa 1821 Nicotra Catarina, atto 58, 12 February 1821. A SECOND Salvadore Nicotra at Giarre, and NOT obviously the one named in Matrimoni 1838 — that act makes Nicotra Alfio the son of Nicotra Salvadore and LA SPINA ROSA, not Costa Anna. One man remarried, or two men of one name. Not decided
Giarre Nicotra Rosario Nicotra Paola Previtera 1821 Nicotra Giuseppe, atto 191, May 1821. AND THIS MAY BE THE 1820 ROSARIO UNDER A DIFFERENT WIFE'S NAME, OR A MISREADING OF MINE: the 1820 entry was read as NICOTRA ROSARIO and ROSA PROVIDENZA, this one as PAOLA PREVITERA. Providenza and Previtera are a plausible slip for each other; Rosa and Paola are not. One of the two readings is probably wrong and I have not established which — the acts themselves would settle it
Mascali Nicotra — (seven deaths, not a household) — 1875, 1876, 1879, 1880, 1881 SEVEN NICOTRA DEATHS in nine years of Mascali's death indexes: ORAZIA 1875/107, MARIA 1876/14, GIUSEPPE 1879/21, SALVATORE 1880/63, LEONARDO 1880/95, NUNZIATO 1881/2, SALVATORE 1881/14. NONE IS ROSARIO AND NONE IS VENERA MURABITO. BOTH CANDIDATES WERE TESTED BY FETCHING THE ACTS. The 1879 GIUSEPPE IS DISPROVED: he died aged ONE YEAR, son of Venero Nicotra and Venera Sorbello, not the Giuseppe born 19 May 1842. The 1876 MARIA CANNOT BE READ: her act lies under the archive's own black cover sheet
Mascali Nicotra Venero Nicotra Venera Sorbello 1879, 1883 A BRACCIALE NICOTRA HOUSEHOLD AT MASCALI — the social condition Rosario Nicotra shares, and the first of its kind found here. Named in Morti 1879 atto 21, the death of their son GIUSEPPE aged ONE YEAR on 3 April 1879. Nothing attaches them to Rosario and nothing should until an act does. A SECOND CHILD LOST: Morti 1883 atto 10, ANGELA aged EIGHT MONTHS, died 23 January 1883 at contrada Costaporane, so born about May 1882. TWO INFANTS IN FOUR YEARS. AND THE MOTHER'S FORENAME DOES NOT MATCH. The 1879 act was read here as VENERA Sorbello; the 1883 act says SEBASTIANA SORBELLO, in a clean hand. Same surname, same trade, same comune, four years apart — so either one reading is wrong, or Venero remarried a second Sorbello, or the woman carried both names. It is recorded as a disagreement and NOT resolved: the 1879 act should be re-read at full width before anybody decides.
Mascali Nicotra Giuseppe Nicotra fu Angelo — 1873 Forty years old, lavorante, of Mascali, and the witness GIOVANNI NICOTRA CHOSE HIMSELF for his daughter's birth act of 13 December 1873 — «testimoni scelti dal dichiarante stesso». A man picks his own witnesses, so this is the nearest thing to a kinsman the record offers, and it is still not a join. The 1873 index has him fathering a son Giovanni at act 31. His own father ANGELO was dead by 1873.
Mascali Nicotra Gaetano Nicotra Carmela Cavallaro 1874, 1877 Of NUNZIATA, in the comune of Mascali. Forty-three and a lavorante in January 1877, so born about 1833. Two daughters in the index: MARIA, 28 March 1874 (act 47, paternità Gaetano), and ROSARIA, born 7 January 1877 at half past seven in the morning (act 8, read in the original). HIS DAUGHTER MARIA IS THE NAMESAKE TRAP: the archive's own Maria Nicotra was born to GIOVANNI at Mascali on 8 December 1875, twenty months later. Two Maria Nicotras, one town, one decade, different fathers.
Giarre Murabito Giuseppe Murabito Agostina Coppolino 1827, 1828, 1832 NOT A NICOTRA HOUSEHOLD, and it is here because half the name this archive is looking for is MURABITO. Three children in the Giarre birth Tavole: VENERA 1827 act 98, SERAFINA 1828 act 158, SALVADORE 1832 act 155. Settled at Giarre across six years rather than passing through. The forenames are what matter: on Sicilian custom a first daughter carries the paternal grandmother's name and a first son the paternal grandfather's, so this household points back to a SALVADORE MURABITO and a VENERA. Their own Venera, born 1827, is NOT Rosario Nicotra's wife — she would have been fourteen when Giovanni was born about 1841 — but a Venera Murabito of the right generation would be Giuseppe's sister or cousin, and this is the family to test that against.
Giarre Murabito Giuseppe Murabito Venera Patanè 1834 Son ROSARIO, act 100 of 1834. A DIFFERENT WIFE from the Coppolino Agostina household, so either a second man of the name or a remarriage — Giarre is the largest comune in this archive and more than one Giuseppe Murabito is ordinary. Noted because the wife is a VENERA and the son a ROSARIO, which are the two forenames of the couple this archive cannot find. Wrong surname for the wife and far too late for the son, and it is a coincidence, not a lead.
Giarre Murabito Giuseppe Murabito Sebastiana Pappalardo 1836 Daughter VENERA, act 203 of 1836. A THIRD wife recorded against the name Giuseppe Murabito at Giarre, and the SECOND daughter called Venera among the Giarre Murabito. That is the finding worth carrying: VENERA IS A RECURRING MURABITO FORENAME HERE, so «Venera Murabito» in the 1872 act is an ordinary Giarre name and cannot be pinned to a household on the name alone.
Giarre Murabito Francesco Murabito Serafina Barbagallo 1828, 1835, 1837 Three children across nine years: ANGELA 1828 act 91 (the surname spelled Bertagallo there), ROSARIO 1835 act 134, ANGELO 1837 act 146. Settled at Giarre.
Giarre Murabito Vito Murabito Francesca Longi 1828 Daughter ANGELA, act 83 of 1828 — one of two girls called Angela born to different Murabito parents in the same year, which is how the households are told apart.
Giarre Murabito Alfio Murabito Rosaria Sorbello 1835 Son SALVADORE, act 45 of 1835. An ALFIO Murabito at Giarre — Alfio is the forename this archive has been following through the NICOTRA of Giarre and Riposto, and here it is in the other surname. Recorded, not joined.
Giarre Nicotra D. Giuseppe Nicotra Rosaria Misano 1830 THE TITLED LINE, AND THE FIRST MARRIAGE THIS ARCHIVE HAS FOR ANY NICOTRA. Their son D. FRANCESCO NICOTRA, twenty-five and a CALZOLAJO, born and living at Giarre, married Maria Sapienza of Riposto there on 14 June 1830 — Riposto Matrimoni 1830 atto 12, read in the original. Rosaria Misano was SIXTY-FOUR in 1830, so born about 1766, which puts this couple's own marriage in the 1790s and makes them the earliest Nicotra generation the archive has reached anywhere. The «D.» is Don on both father and son. THIS IS NOT ROSARIO'S FAMILY: Rosario Nicotra is a bracciante and his son Giovanni a lavorante, and nothing connects a labouring household at Mascali to a titled artisan one at Giarre except a surname and a town. It is filed so that the next person meeting a Giarre Nicotra knows which family they have.
Mascali Nicotra Giuseppe Nicotra Venera Coco 1883 A THIRD LABOURING NICOTRA HOUSEHOLD AT MASCALI, from Morti 1883 atto 10's neighbour: atto 123, MARIA aged TWO, died 16 December 1883 at contrada Cava, so born about 1881. Both parents braccianti. WHETHER THIS IS THE GIUSEPPE THE ARCHIVE ALREADY HAS IS NOT SETTLED. GIUSEPPE NICOTRA FU ANGELO, forty and a lavorante, is the witness Giovanni Nicotra chose himself for his daughter's birth in 1873 — he would be about fifty here, which is late but possible for a two-year-old's father. The 1873 act gives no wife, so there is nothing to match VENERA COCO against. Two Giuseppe Nicotra at Mascali is equally possible and the archive does not pick.
Mascali Murabito Bartolo Murabito Francesca Parisi 1885 THE FIRST MURABITO AT MASCALI, and the only one outside Giarre. Mascali Morti 1885 atto 4, read in the original: a BRACCIALE, BORN AT MASCALI, son of the late PAOLO MURABITO, WIDOWER of FRANCESCA PARISI, died 13 January 1885 and declared to be ONE HUNDRED AND SIX. WHY IT MATTERS AND WHY IT IS NOT A JOIN. This archive is looking for VENERA MURABITO, wife of a bracciante, living at Mascali in 1872. Until now every Murabito it had was at Giarre and none was a labourer. Here is a labouring Murabito family native to Mascali, with a PAOLO a generation above Bartolo. Nothing in the act names Venera, and nothing should be claimed. The age must not be taken as written either: a declared 106 is the classic inflation, and this archive's audit records ages running out by one to four years as routine. Even at eighty he is of the generation that could father a Venera born about 1815-1825.
Mascali Nicotra Giuseppe Nicotra Caterina Pennisi 1831 THE EARLIEST NICOTRA HOUSEHOLD AT MASCALI. Their son ALFIO married CARMELA SUDIERI on 3 November 1831 — Mascali Matrimoni 1831 atto 18, the first Nicotra groom found in any Mascali marriage Tavola. The index gives his PATRIA as MASCALI, so this family was settled here by about 1805 and did not come from Giarre. NOT ROSARIO'S PARENTS. Rosario Nicotra's death act of 1890 names his father as SIMONE and his mother as MARIANNA MUSUMECI, and says he was born at GIARRE. Two different Nicotra families at Mascali, one native and one that arrived from Giarre. The ALFIO is worth carrying: an Alfio Nicotra fathers a child at Mascali in 1873, and whether that is this man at about sixty-five or a son named for him is not settled.

None of these is a join and none is offered as one. Two of the fathers are called Alfio and a third is a Rosario, which is precisely the trap this archive has fallen into before — four undated Rosario Mazza were once fused on the name alone, and the rule since is that two people of a surname in one district are not kin until an act says so. One search that cannot work, written down so nobody plans it twice

The obvious move, when a man's birthplace is in doubt and his marriage bundle survives, is to open the bundle: a processetto carries both spouses' birth extracts and their dead parents' death acts, and would answer Giovanni Nicotra's birthplace in one image.

It cannot work here, and the reason is a change of régime. The Bourbon-era Matrimoni, processetti do carry those extracts, and this archive has mined them at Piedimonte and at Scilla. The Italian-era Matrimoni, allegati — which is what 1872 is — carry the publication certificate and little else: no birth extract, no death act. What they do carry, and the processetti do not, is the printed vivente / fu field that established Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito were both alive.

Fascicolo 20 of 1872 has been read, and it is already giving everything it has. A researcher reasoning from the processetti to the allegati will plan a search the volume cannot answer.

What would carry it further

Salvadore Nicotra's own birth act at Giarre. He married in 1844, so he was born about 1815–1824 — a decade earlier than anything read here. That act names Alfio Nicotra's age and trade, and would say whether this Giarre household is a labouring one or the Dottor Don line under another spelling.

The marriage Tavole, which is the index that would settle it. It names both spouses, all four parents and the comune each came from. 91 years of it have now been read across the three towns — Mascali 1820–1847, Riposto 1821–1846, Giarre 1820–1860 — and Rosario is in none of them. 3 banked year(s) remain, held up by nothing but a rate limiter.
