Where this comes from
3 of the 10 relationships drawn above have been proved by a record this archive has read. The other 7 come from Michael Mazza's family tree and have not.
3 records have been read about them:
- Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20 (7 October 1872), read in the original; Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1848 atto 45 (annual Tavola) — documented addition
- Queensland BDM, death 1963/B/61348 and the whole surname index; Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1875 Indice Annuale — probable
- Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20; Nati 1848 atto 45 — documented
MARIA NICOTRA'S MOTHER, and the archive spent days unable to touch her because the Queensland registrar wrote CASSANETI, a spelling that exists nowhere in Italy. She is CASSANITI. «E VENERA CASSANITI, di anni ventiquattro, QUI domiciliata e residente, figlia del FU GAETANO, e di FU MARIA CURRENTI» -- both her parents already dead in October 1872, and she the one of the couple who belonged to Piedimonte.
Surname — the spelling is an informant's, not a record's — PROBABLY VENERA CASSANITI. «Cassaneti» appears exactly once in the whole Queensland index -- on her daughter's 1963 death registration, taken down from an informant at a Brisbane registry -- and NOWHERE ELSE. «CASSANITI» returns five Queensland registrations and is the ordinary Catanese form; it is also what the PIEDIMONTE ETNEO birth index writes, holding a Cassaniti Sebastiano and a Cassaniti Leonardo Maria in 1875 alone. THIS MATTERS PRACTICALLY: a Sicilian register searched for «Cassaneti» will return nothing and the negative will mean nothing. Search Cassaniti.
A surname the Queensland registrar invented — VENERA CASSANITI, born about 1848 at Piedimonte Etneo, daughter of the late GAETANO CASSANITI and the late MARIA CURRENTI. «CASSANETI» appears nowhere in Italy and exactly once in the whole Queensland index -- on Maria Mazza's own death registration, taken down from an informant at a Brisbane registry counter. The Italian act settles it. She was twenty-four when she married on 7 October 1872 and both her parents were already dead.
Where the two disagree, the chart above still draws the tree as it stands. This archive does not silently rewrite what it was given — the acts are here.
