The Register
Every record this archive has actually put its eyes on, with what it says and where it is. Assembled from the files the reading was recorded in, so it cannot fall behind the work.
A family tree is not evidence. These are the documents behind it — civil acts from two Italian towns, a Queensland index, a passenger list, a cemetery register — and the point of listing them together is that you can see how few there still are against how much the tree asserts. What is not here is on Searched and Open questions.
| Scilla — the civil register Birth and marriage acts read image by image off the Antenati films. The Arena and Polistena quarters both come out of this one town, so these are the acts that separate them. | Reggio Calabria | 129 |
| Piedimonte Etneo — the civil register The Mazza acts. Each one carries the father's age, which is how a birth year can be recovered for a man who has no birth act of his own. | Catania, Sicily | 11 |
| Queensland births, deaths and marriages Index entries, with the registration number, so each can be ordered as a certificate. Where the index garbles a name the garble is kept and named. | the Australian end | 28 |
| Sicily — records found for people who had none Each of these closed a hole the family tree had left open. | Piedimonte Etneo and around | 26 |
| FindMyPast — the New York years The branch that went to America rather than to Australia, and what became of it. | New York County | 52 |
| Passenger records The family tree recorded eighteen crossings and not one ship's name. These are the ones the index gave back — and where the tree and the record disagree, both are shown. | National Archives of Australia | 12 |
| Nudgee Cemetery burial register Including the four consecutive plots — V-1026 to V-1029 — that hold the four Italian great-grandparents, buried in the order they died. | Brisbane | 19 |

277 records · everything is listed; the filters only narrow it
277 records across 1 surnames. A record is not a person: the same person can appear many times and two people can share a name, so a row links to whichever page this archive has actually identified.

| Rosario Mazza | What DEATH RECORD — the archive had none · Detail Died 15 NOVEMBER 1924 at PRESA, Piedimonte Etneo, aged SEVENTY-NINE, a CONTADINO; certificate number 15. Aged 79 in November 1924 gives a birth in 1845, at Piedimonte Etneo -- which matches the ages the marriage proclamations gave him in 1898, 1902 and 1910 and CORRECTS the family tree, which says 1850. His father is named as MARIANO and his mother as MARIA CATALANO; his wife as LEONARDA BONANNO. · Source Italy, Catania, Catania, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1929 — FamilySearch 1:1:XWTK-5R8Q | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano | What THE NAME LINE CONFIRMED FROM A RECORD · Detail The archive reached Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano by inference from marriage proclamations that call Rosario 'di Mariano'. | Mariano Mazza (the younger) | What A SON THE ARCHIVE DID NOT HAVE · Detail The Acireale diocesan registers carry a parish record naming ROSARIO MAZZA and LEONARDA BONANNO as the parents of a MARIANUM MAZZA -- a son named for his paternal grandfather, exactly as Sicilian custom predicts for a first son. | Salvatore Mazza x Maria Nicotra | What THE PARISH MARRIAGE, 25 APRIL 1898 · Detail The parish register of Piedimonte Etneo records the marriage in LATIN: Salvator Mazza, son of ROGERIUS MAZZA and LEONARDA BONANNO, to MARIA NICOTRAM, daughter of JOANNES NICOTRAM and VENERA COSENTINO. Rosario appears as 'Rogerius', which is why a search for 'Rosario' in these registers returns nothing. · Source Piedimonte Etneo parish register, Marriage Records 1777-1911 — FamilySearch 3:1:3QS7-99ZG-7XNZ | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |

The parish register of the same 1898 marriage gives a THIRD: VENERA COSENTINO. The given name Venera is constant across all three; the surname is read three different ways. | Rosario Mazza x Leonarda Bonanno | What THEIR MARRIAGE — FOUND. PIEDIMONTE ETNEO, 30 APRIL 1871, ATTO 14 · Detail The act the archive has wanted for a fortnight. On 30 APRIL 1871, at four in the afternoon in the casa comunale of Piedimonte Etneo, before Barone Mariano, sindaco, ROSARIO MAZZA and LEONARDA BONANNO were married. Both are called CELIBI -- neither had been married before -- both BORN AND RESIDENT there, and both BRACCIANTI: she worked the land alongside him. He is entered as twenty-six, she as twenty-six. HIS PARENTS ARE NAMED: figlio di MARIANO e di MARIA CATALANO. HERS ARE NAMED FOR THE FIRST TIME ANYWHERE: figlia di GAETANO e d'ANNA CAVALLARO. Witnesses: Salvatore Greco, 38, calzolaio, and Antonino Di Lava fu Giuseppe, 46, bracciante. Act 15 follows at half past four the same afternoon, so the register was doing a run of weddings that day. The parish register was the wrong door: the film's own index held no marriage for the pair. Civil registration began in 1866, so an 1871 marriage is a CIVIL act, and the civil act is the one that names all four parents. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1871, atto 14 — Antenati ark an_ua83392, images 13-14 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Rosario Mazza's children in the parish registers | What FOUR MORE, UNDER FOUR SPELLINGS OF HIS NAME · Detail The Acireale diocesan registers carry several children of Rosario Mazza and Leonarda Bonanno, and the father's name is transcribed differently almost every time: ROGERIUS Mazza with a son Salvator; ROSARIUS Mazza with a son HORATIUS (Orazio); JOANNES Mazza with LEONORA Bonanno and a son Joannem (Giovanni); GASPARE Mazza with Leonarda Bonanno and a son SANTO. The last is the more interesting: SANTO MAZZA is one of the two sons this archive found missing from the family tree, and here is a parish record of him. The lesson for searching these registers is that the given name is unreliable and the WIFE'S name is the stable handle. · Source Italy, Catania, Diocesi di Acireale, Catholic Church Records, 1560-1950 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Rosario Mazza | What HIS BIRTH ACT — BORN 2 JUNE 1845, ATTO 64 · Detail Found by working backwards from the marriage. ATTO DI NASCITA no. 64 of 1845, Comune di Piedimonte, distretto di Acireale, Provincia di Catania: MARIANO MAZZA, DI ANNI TRENTASEI, di professione BRACCIALE, appeared before the sindaco Antonino Grassi and presented a boy born to MARIA CATALANO, of thirty-six, and to the said Mariano Mazza, on the SECOND DAY OF JUNE 1845 at eleven in the morning, NELLA CASA DI LORO ABITAZIONE, and gave him the name ROSARIO. The baptism column has the parish of the Chiesa Maggiore returning the notice the same day, 2 June 1845, for ROSARIO MAZZA. This is the whole of the deepest Sicilian generation in one page: it CONFIRMS the death act's Mariano and Maria Catalano from an independent register, it FIXES Rosario's birth to a day, and it dates MARIANO MAZZA HIMSELF to about 1809 and MARIA CATALANO to about 1809. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1845, atto 64 — Antenati ark an_ua72387, image 66 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Gaetano Bonanno and Anna Cavallaro | What A WHOLE GENERATION THE TREE DOES NOT HAVE · Detail Leonarda Bonanno has stood in this archive as a name with a father's first name attached -- 'daughter of Gaetano', from the 1910 marriage proclamation. The marriage act of 1871 gives her BOTH parents outright: GAETANO BONANNO and ANNA CAVALLARO of Piedimonte Etneo. They are the Bonanno equal of Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano, and like them they are ENTIRELY ABSENT FROM THE FAMILY TREE. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1871, atto 14 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| The Piedimonte Etneo birth registers, 1820-1863 | What THE WHOLE SERIES IS NOW LISTED, AND ITS INDEX IS BETTER THAN AN INDEX · Detail Fifty volumes of Piedimonte births, 1820 to 1863, with their Antenati arks, are now written down in data/pe-arks.tsv. Two things make this series unusually cheap to work. First, each volume ends with a REGISTER OF THE WHOLE YEAR -- not an alphabetical tavola but a ruled table, six openings long, listing every birth IN ACT ORDER with the child, the comune, BOTH PARENTS and the day. A year of births can be read in six page-loads. Second, the index is a finding aid for PARENTS, not just children: to find every child of Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano it is enough to read the parents column down each year. That is the next sweep, and it will give Rosario's brothers and sisters. · Source Antenati, Stato civile della restaurazione, Piedimonte (oggi Piedimonte Etneo), serie 72189 · method | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Mariano Mazza's marriage | What THE ACT READ — PIEDIMONTE ETNEO, MATRIMONI 1836, ATTO 17. STILL A LEAD, AND ONE WORD OF IT WAS MINE, NOT THE REGISTER'S · Detail The act itself, found at image 35 of the volume: in these registers the filled ATTO DELLA SOLENNE PROMESSA sits on the right-hand page of every ODD image, so act = (image - 1) / 2. 7 SEPTEMBER 1836, twenty-three o'clock Italian time, before Raffaele Gulli, second eletto acting as sindaco. MARIANO MAZZA, of anni TRENTA, born at Piedimonte, of profession BRACCIALE, domiciled in this comune, son of IGNAZIO and of GIUSEPPA PULVIRENTI, aged SIXTY. And AGATA CATALANO, of anni VENTOTTO, BORN AT MACCHIA, domiciled in this territory, daughter of the LATE CARLO and of MARIA CARDILE, aged SIXTY. Married in church the next day, 8 September 1836. FIRST, A CORRECTION OF THIS ARCHIVE'S OWN. The index column was read here as 'Mazza ORAZIO'. The act says IGNAZIO. The act wins, and the argument built on the other reading -- that Rosario named a son Orazio, so Orazio was a family name -- IS WITHDRAWN. It was an argument from a misreading. WHAT THE ACT SETTLES AND WHAT IT DOES NOT. For: he is the only Mazza Mariano groom in sixteen years of this register; he is a BRACCIALE, exactly as in 1845; he is Piedimonte-born, as in 1845; the surname Catalano is right; and the BRIDE'S AGE FITS -- 28 in September 1836 is a birth about 1808, and Rosario's mother is 36 in June 1845, a birth about 1809. Against: the bride is AGATA here and MARIA in both of Rosario's acts; and the GROOM'S AGE IS THREE YEARS OUT -- 30 in 1836 gives 1806, where 1845 gives 1809. So: PROBABLE, NOT PROVEN. Ignazio Mazza and Giuseppa Pulvirenti are not drawn on any chart and are not in the documented additions. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1836, atto 17 — Antenati ark an_ua72256, image 35 (act), image 52 (index) · lead | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| The Mazza of Piedimonte Etneo | What HOW FEW THEY WERE — THE NEGATIVE SWEEPS · Detail Worth writing down because it changes what to expect. The birth registers of 1844 and 1846 were read ENTIRE -- 128 births in one year, 146 in the other -- and contain NO MAZZA AT ALL. 1845 contains two: Rosario, act 64, and an Alfio Mazza, act 90, son of INNOCENZO MAZZA and DOMENICA CAVALLARO. Across sixteen years of marriages, 1830-1845, the Mazza appear four times: Mariano as a groom in 1836, and three Mazza women as brides -- Domenica in 1842 (to Pietro Sorbello), Alfia in 1844 (to Mariano Sorbello) and one more. So the Mazza were a SMALL family at Piedimonte in the 1830s and 1840s, not a numerous one. Rosario may have had few brothers and sisters, or none surviving; and the 111 unjoined Mazza in the family tree are very unlikely to be Piedimonte cousins. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1844 and 1846 read complete; Matrimoni 1830-1845 indexes read | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| The 1836 processetti | What THE OTHER ROUTE IS CLOSED · Detail The Matrimoni, processetti of Piedimonte Etneo would hold the spouses' own birth certificates, filed with the marriage -- the cleanest possible test of whether the Mariano Mazza of 1836 is Rosario's father. The series exists and was listed in full: TWENTY volumes, and they run 1841 to 1860. THERE IS NO 1836. That route is closed, and the question has to be settled some other way -- most likely by Mariano's own birth act, if Ignazio Mazza and Giuseppa Pulvirenti can be found in the birth registers from 1820, or by his death act. · Source Antenati, serie 72189, Matrimoni processetti — 20 volumes, 1841-1860 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Leonarda Bonanno | What HER BIRTH ACT — BORN 7 NOVEMBER 1843, ATTO 101 · Detail Found the same way as her husband's: by reading the annual table of the whole year. Entry 101 of the Piedimonte births of 1843 reads BONANNO LEONARDA -- Piedimonte -- BONANNO GAETANO / CAVALLARO ANNA. The act itself: on 8 November 1843, before the sindaco Antonino Grassi, GAETANO BONANNO, DI ANNI TRENTASEI, di professione BRACCIALE, domiciled there, presented a girl born to ANNA CAVALLARO, DI ANNI TRENTOTTO, and to the said Gaetano Bonanno, on the SEVENTH day of November at eight in the morning, NELLA CASA DI LORO ABITAZIONE, and gave her the name LEONARDA. Baptised the same day at the Chiesa Maggiore. So GAETANO BONANNO was born about 1807 and ANNA CAVALLARO about 1805, and both are now dated as well as named. And Leonarda was TWENTY-SEVEN when she married on 30 April 1871, not twenty-six as her marriage act says -- one more declared age a year out. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1843, atto 101 — Antenati ark an_ua72385, image 103 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Gaetano Bonanno and Anna Cavallaro's marriage | What NOT AT PIEDIMONTE, 1828-1845 — EIGHTEEN YEARS READ · Detail The marriage indexes of Piedimonte Etneo were read for EIGHTEEN CONSECUTIVE YEARS, 1828 to 1845, and there is NO GAETANO BONANNO among the grooms. Three Bonanno appear in those years, all of them women marrying out. Gaetano was born about 1807, so a marriage before 1828 would have him under twenty-one; possible, but the likelier reading is that they married in ANNA CAVALLARO'S OWN COMUNE and only then settled at Piedimonte -- which is what the Mazza marriage of 1836 shows happening the other way about, with a bride from Macchia. The Piedimonte volumes 1820-1827 are listed and unread; after that the search moves to Macchia, Mascali and Giarre. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1828-1845, annual indexes — Antenati serie 72189 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |

MAZZA MARIANO and MARIA CATALANO appear in ONE of them: Rosario, act 64 of 1845. No brother, no sister, in the two years before him or the two years after. The only other Mazza births in those four years belong to a DIFFERENT couple: MAZZA INNOCENZIO and CAVALLARO DOMENICA, who have an Alfio at act 90 of 1845 and a Sebastiana at act 31 of 1847. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1844, 1845, 1846, 1847 — annual tables read complete | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Innocenzio Mazza and Mariano Mazza | What AN OPEN QUESTION THAT WOULD JOIN TWO THREADS OF THIS ARCHIVE · Detail This archive already holds a second Piedimonte Mazza line, reached from the other end: the marriage acts of 1874 and 1876 make ANTONINO MAZZA and SALVATORE MAZZA both 'figlio d'INNOCENZIO e di DOMENICA CAVALLARO'. The birth registers now put the same couple in the 1840s, with an Alfio in 1845 and a Sebastiana in 1847 -- in the same comune, in the same years, as Rosario. AND THE 1836 MARRIAGE ACT MAKES MARIANO MAZZA THE SON OF AN IGNAZIO. Ignazio and Innocenzio are not the same name, but a man called Ignazio with a son called Innocenzio is entirely ordinary, and if Innocenzio and Mariano were BROTHERS then the archive's other Piedimonte Mazza are ROSARIO'S FIRST COUSINS and two threads join. NOT A FINDING. The test is Innocenzio's own marriage act, which would name his father. It is not in the Piedimonte indexes 1825-1845 -- the only Mazza groom in twenty-one years is Mariano in 1836 -- so Innocenzio married before 1825 or in another comune, exactly as the Bonanno appear to have done. · Source Piedimonte Etneo, Nati 1845 atto 90, Nati 1847 atto 31; Matrimoni 1874 atto 26, 1876 atto 5 · lead | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| The Mazza of Piedimonte, 1820-1845 | What TWENTY-SIX YEARS, THE WHOLE CIVIL SERIES, AND ONE MAZZA GROOM · Detail The marriage indexes of Piedimonte Etneo have now been read for EVERY YEAR FROM 1820 -- the first civil volume there is -- TO 1845. Twenty-six consecutive years, something over five hundred marriages. THERE IS EXACTLY ONE GROOM CALLED MAZZA IN ALL OF THEM: MARIANO, act 17 of 1836. Not one other Mazza man marries at Piedimonte in the entire civil era up to 1845. TWO THINGS FOLLOW. First, it strengthens the 1836 identification: the objection to it was never that there was a rival candidate, and now there demonstrably is none. Second, INNOCENZIO MAZZA -- whose sons Salvatore and Antonino the archive reached from the other end, and whose children Alfio and Sebastiana are in the birth registers of 1845 and 1847 -- DID NOT MARRY AT PIEDIMONTE EITHER. He married before 1820, which is before civil registration and so parish-only, or he married in another comune. | Mariano Mazza's birth act | What IT CANNOT EXIST, AND THAT IS THE ANSWER · Detail Worth stating so it stops being a target. The marriage act of 1836 makes Mariano Mazza THIRTY, and his son's birth act of 1845 makes him THIRTY-SIX -- so he was born between about 1806 and 1809. CIVIL REGISTRATION AT PIEDIMONTE BEGINS IN 1820. His birth is fourteen years earlier than the first volume. There is no civil birth act for Mariano Mazza and there never was one: his baptism is a PARISH record, in the books of the Chiesa Maggiore, and the diocesan films of Acireale are the only place it can be. THE SAME GOES FOR GAETANO BONANNO (b. c.1807) and ANNA CAVALLARO (b. c.1805), and for IGNAZIO MAZZA and GIUSEPPA PULVIRENTI, who was sixty in 1836 and so born about 1776. · Source Antenati, Piedimonte Etneo — the restaurazione series begins at 1820 | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Mariano Mazza's death | What SOUGHT IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF THE WINDOW, NOT FOUND · Detail The window is now bounded at one end: Salvatore's birth act of JANUARY 1873 calls his father «ROSARIO MAZZA DI MARIANO» -- DI, not FU -- so MARIANO WAS ALIVE IN JANUARY 1873, aged about sixty-four. He is dead by his son's death act of 1924. Antenati holds the Piedimonte MORTI of the italiano series from 1866, sequential: ark(Y) = an_ua83439 + (Y-1866). The M block of the annual index has been read for 1873, 1875, 1876 and 1877. THERE IS NO MAZZA MARIANO IN ANY OF THEM. 1874 CANNOT BE READ. The volume carries the archivist's slip -- PAG. ONDULATE / PAG. MACCHIATA / PAG. TRASPARENTE / TUTTO IL VOLUME / IMPOSSIBILE FARE DI MEGLIO -- and the index is a black wash of ink. That is the second volume in this archive to be lost that way, after the Scilla marriages of 1888. | Briatico | What THE FOURTH QUARTER IS ONLINE, AND IT IS LARGE · Detail 555 volumes at the Archivio di Stato di Catanzaro, from 1806. This archive had done NO register work at all on the Briatico quarter -- the Prostamo, Melluso and Anile descent, eight generations asserted and none documented below Domenico Prostamo. The holding turns out to be one of the largest available to it: FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE volumes, including Potenzoni as a separate locality. CIVIL REGISTRATION IN CALABRIA BEGINS IN 1809, under the French, and Briatico's Napoleonic Nati, Matrimoni and Morti all survive from that year. So generations 4 and 5 of this quarter -- Antonino Prostamo, born about 1785, and Domenico Prostamo, about 1820 -- are inside the civil era and reachable in principle. TWO ARK FORMULAS, both verified: NATI restaurazione = an_ua87718 + (Y - 1816); MATRIMONI restaurazione = an_ua87654 + (Y - 1840). The whole map is in data/briatico-arks.tsv. AND ONE GAP THAT EXPLAINS SOMETHING. The marriages run 1840-1858 and then STOP UNTIL 1911. Alfonso Prostamo married Caterina Melluso on 21 May 1887 -- squarely in that gap -- which is why the archive has that act from FamilySearch and not from Antenati. · Source Antenati, Archivio di Stato di Catanzaro — Briatico, 555 volumes | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Domenico Prostamo, b. 1820 | What THE TREE'S YEAR, TESTED AND NEGATIVE · Detail Briatico, Nati 1820: twenty-seven births, Tavola read in full. No Prostamo. The family tree dates Domenico Prostamo to 1820 and gives no source; he is generation 5, and everything above him is UNTESTED. The 1820 register has been read entire. BRIATICO IS A SMALL PLACE: twenty-seven births in the year, and the annual Tavola is ALPHABETISED BY THE CHILD'S GIVEN NAME -- the same trap this archive met at Scilla in 1818, where a search under the surname finds nothing and proves nothing. Read under D, the year holds exactly one Domenico: INSANNI DOMENICO, «figlio naturale», born 27 May. NOT A PROSTAMO. SO THE TREE'S 1820 IS NOW A TESTED NEGATIVE rather than an untested assertion -- and by this archive's own audit rule, a year taken from an undocumented tree date must be widened by at least five years before the negative means anything. 1818, 1819, 1821 and 1822 are fetched and unread; the whole run 1816-1830 is cheap, at roughly one image a year. · Source Briatico, Stato civile della restaurazione, Nati 1820 — Antenati an_ua87722 · negative | Sicily — records found for people who had none Piedimonte Etneo and around |
| Antenati's nominative name index | What IT COVERS NEITHER PROVINCE THIS FAMILY LIVES IN · Detail Tested for Catania (Piedimonte Etneo) and now for Catanzaro (Briatico). Neither is in it. Worth recording so nobody tries it a third time. Antenati has a NAME index -- /search-nominative/ -- built by volunteers over a subset of its holdings, and where it exists it turns a register sweep into a single query. IT DOES NOT COVER THE PROVINCE OF CATANIA: 11,632 indexed Mazza and not one from Piedimonte Etneo or anywhere in the province. AND IT DOES NOT COVER CATANZARO: searches for PROSTAMO, MELLUSO and VENTRICE return no Briatico and no Potenzoni at all -- Prostamo returns nothing whatever. SO BOTH HALVES OF THIS FAMILY MUST BE READ RATHER THAN SEARCHED, comune by comune and year by year, off the annual Tavole. | Mazza Gaetano | What A MAZZA DEATH AT PIEDIMONTE ETNEO IN 1880 — act 122 · Detail Found in the M block of the 1880 annual death index: «Mazza Gaetano — 122», the double z unmistakable beside the Musumeci and Marano around it. THE ACT CANNOT BE REACHED IN THE IMAGES AS DIGITISED, and the calibration is written down so nobody repeats it. Parte I runs to image 89 and Parte II begins at image 90. Sampling the act numbers across Parte I gives 113 and 116 at image 56; 117 and 119 at 57, re-shot at 58; 121 and 123 at 59, re-shot at 60 and 61; 125 and 127 at 62, re-shot at 63; 129 and 131 at 64; 145 and 148 at 70; 171 and 173 at 80. Every opening sampled shows two act numbers that are NOT consecutive, and consecutive openings step by four — so 114, 115, 118, 120, 122, 124, 126, 128 and 130 never appear. Either the photographer shot alternate openings, or the re-shoots stand in place of them. | Serafina Arena — baptism | FOUND · Result Baptised 1898, OUR LADY OF LORETTO, New York County · Reference New York Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms, US/NY/CATH/PR/BAP/01054593. Rocco Arena and Generosa Costa's daughter, born 14 August 1898 and dead by 30 January 1900. Our Lady of Loretto is the Italian parish on Elizabeth Street in Little Italy -- minutes from the Mulberry Street address the 1899 manifest gives for Rocco. | Clementina Arena's 1921 crossing — WITHDRAWN. IT IS SOMEBODY ELSE'S. | RETRACTED · Result US/PASS/NY/ELLIS2/000191616/3 is a different Clementina Arena. · Reference THIS ARCHIVE RECORDED A CROSSING IT HAD NOT CHECKED. The identification rested on a NAME AND A YEAR and nothing else: a Clementina Arena arriving at New York in 1921, and a Clementina Arena born in Manhattan in December 1900. THE TRANSCRIPTS OF THE NEIGHBOURING LINES DESTROY IT. The same manifest -- ship GIUSEPPE VERDI out of NAPLES -- carries at line 1 ROSA ARENA, aged 27, born 1894, whose RESIDENCE IS GIVEN AS VITTORIA, in the province of RAGUSA in SICILY, and whose FATHER is named at line 2 as GIOVANNI. Line 3, Clementina, is entered as ROSA'S SISTER. SO THE CLEMENTINA ARENA OF THIS MANIFEST IS A SICILIAN WOMAN FROM VITTORIA, daughter of a Giovanni Arena, travelling with her sister. She is not the Manhattan-born daughter of Rocco Arena and Generosa Costa. AND THAT MAKES A SECOND CORRECTION NECESSARY. On the morning of 14 September this archive 'corrected' The Crossings, which had said Clementina's 1921 crossing was NOT FOUND, on the strength of this very record. THE ORIGINAL STATEMENT WAS RIGHT. Clementina Arena's 1921 crossing is NOT FOUND, and the archive has now been wrong about it in both directions in a single day -- first by trusting an inherited identification, then by trusting it again to overturn a true negative. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |

| Rocco Arena in the 1910 US census | NEGATIVE · Result Not there · Reference With the 1900 census placing the household in Manhattan and Antonino born there in October 1902, his absence in 1910 supports the family going home to Scilla between 1902 and 1910 -- which is when Anna must have returned to marry Giuseppe Arena. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Italy Births & Baptisms 1806-1900, and Marriages, and Deaths | NEGATIVE · Result DOES NOT COVER SCILLA · Reference The cleanest possible test: ZERO Polistena in any of the three Italian sets. | Italy Marriages 1809-1900 for Rosario Mazza | NEGATIVE · Result Four Rosario Mazza marriages, none after 1862 · Reference The archive wants a marriage about 1870-72 to Leonarda Bonanno. There is no Leonarda Bonanno marriage in the set at all, and no Mariano Mazza birth. Coverage of Piedimonte Etneo is absent or negligible, though 110 Nicotra marriages show the set does reach the Catania area. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |

| THE LOCK IS OPEN — the New York Roman Catholic parish transcripts, read | FOUND · Result The full subscription opens them. FOUR ARENA BAPTISMS at Our Lady of Loretto naming ROCCO ARENA and GENEROSA COSTA, with the Mulberry Street addresses; the Arlotta children; and the marriage register, from which two Arena namesakes were excluded on their parents' names. · Reference THIS ROW WAS A LOCK AND ROW 102 ASKED FOR LOCKS TO BE TURNED INTO ANSWERS. It is answered. The Catholic Heritage Archive transcripts opened on 16 September and the American harvest came out of them: ANTONIO b. 3 Oct 1896 and SERAFINA b. 15 Aug 1898 at 141 MULBERRY, CLEMENTINA b. 21 Dec 1900 at 198 MULBERRY, a second ANTONIO b. 13 Oct 1902 -- the whole New York household of Rocco Arena, with a street number that independently corroborates the 1899 Ellis Island manifest sending Giovanni Arena to «BROTHER ROCCO, N. YORK, MULBERRY ST». THE MOTHER'S NAME IS THE FIELD THAT DID THE WORK, twice over: it attached these four and it excluded two strangers, Giuseppe Arena of Teresa Siniscaldi and Joannem Arena of Angelicae Coglitore. A LOCK IS NOT A NEGATIVE AND THIS ONE SHOULD NEVER HAVE SAT IN THE RECORD LOOKING LIKE EVIDENCE. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The signed-out session, resolved — and why a lapsed subscription is not a negative | METHOD · Result Access restored 16 September 2026 when the account holder took a full month's subscription and signed in. Everything this row listed as wanted has now been run. · Reference KEPT BECAUSE OF WHAT IT NEARLY DID TO THE RECORD. For three days this archive carried a row whose result field read like a finding and was actually a closed door: the trial had lapsed mid-search. A LAPSED SUBSCRIPTION, A PAYWALL AND A SIGNED-OUT SESSION ARE ALL THE SAME THING -- the absence of an answer, not an answer -- and all three were sitting in a file whose other rows are evidence. The convention this produced is now general: A LOCK IS RECORDED AS A LOCK, IT IS OWNED BY WHOEVER CAN OPEN IT, AND IT IS RE-RUN THE MOMENT THEY DO. That is what row 102 of the work list is for, and turning these three rows is what closed it. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Rocco Arlotta — THE 1900 LODGER, IDENTIFIED | FOUND · Result Married ANTONIETTA TAVANI, 4 June 1900, Manhattan. Aged 22, born 1878. Father ANTONIO ARLOTTA, mother NICOLINA CARATOZZOLA. · Reference The Arlotta lodging with Rocco Arena in the 1900 census -- 'Rocco Arlotta, 23' -- was one of the five circumstantial supports for this archive's correction of the Arena parentage, and until now he was only an age and a surname. FindMyPast's United States Marriages index gives him whole: ROCCO ARLOTTA, 22, born 1878, married ANTONIETTA TAVANI, 19, on 4 JUNE 1900 IN MANHATTAN -- the same month the census enumerated him under Rocco Arena's roof. His father was ANTONIO ARLOTTA and his mother NICOLINA CARATOZZOLA; hers Giovanni Tavani and Peppina Fusto. THIS ALSO CLOSES A NEAR MISS. This archive had two candidate arrivals from the Statue of Liberty index -- 16 May 1898 aged 32 and 5 May 1904 -- and neither fitted the census age. The 1898 man, born about 1866, is somebody else. The lodger is the man born 1878. AND HE STAYED. The New York Roman Catholic parish index has a Rocco Arlotta baptising children at OUR LADY OF LORETTO in 1905 and 1908 -- the same Manhattan parish where Rocco Arena's daughters Serafina and Clementina were baptised. He is not a stranger boarding with strangers; he is part of the same Scilla colony in the same few streets. NOTE: his father is ANTONIO, not the GIOVANNI ARLOTTA who is Serafina's father, so he is not her nephew. A cousin is likelier, and untested. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Our Lady of Loretto — the Scilla colony in one Manhattan parish | FOUND · Result Eighty-four Arena baptisms in the New York Roman Catholic parish index, with the father's given name against each. · Reference The index rows are readable even where the transcripts are not, and they show a community rather than a family. At OUR LADY OF LORETTO alone the Arena fathers are ROCCO, GIOVANNI, ROSARIO, MICHELE, FELICE, PIETRO, MARIANO, IGNAZIO, ANGELO, VINCENZO, GIACOMO and AURELIO. THREE OF ROCCO ARENA'S OWN CHILDREN ARE THERE: Antonio, born 1896; Serafina, born 1898; Clementina, born 1900 and baptised 1901. AND TWO THAT MAY BE HIS BROTHER'S. An ANGELICA ARENA, born and baptised 1900, father entered as GIOVANNIE; and a MICHELA ARENA, born 1908, father GIOVANNI. Giovanni Arena, Rocco's brother, landed in May 1899 and was lodging with Rocco in June 1900. If either child is his, he did not go straight home -- and the family tree has neither. RECORDED AS A LEAD: the index gives no mother, and there are several Giovanni Arena in the same parish register. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| RETRACTED — the godparents are not behind that paywall, because they are not in the record at all | RETRACTED · Result The full transcript has now been read. ITS FIELDS ARE: record set, name, birth year, baptism year, parish, county, state, country, MOTHER'S first and last name, FATHER'S first and last name, birth date, baptism date, location, archdiocese, RESIDENCE, language. THERE IS NO GODPARENT FIELD, and there is no «View original record» button -- these baptisms are TRANSCRIPT ONLY, with no image. · Reference THIS ROW SAID THE TRANSCRIPT CARRIED «THE MOTHER'S NAME AND THE GODPARENTS» AND CALLED IT THE SINGLE RICHEST UNOPENED SEAM FOR THE AMERICAN YEARS. HALF OF THAT WAS TRUE. The mother's name is there and it has been worth everything -- it attached four children to Rocco Arena and excluded two strangers. THE GODPARENTS WERE NEVER THERE. The claim was made while the record was locked, by reasoning from what a parish baptism register contains rather than from what this index transcribes, and A GUESS ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF A LOCKED RECORD IS NOT A FINDING. WORSE, THERE IS NO ROUTE TO THEM HERE: with no image, the godparents cannot be reached at any subscription tier. They exist only in the original Our Lady of Loretto register, which means the Archdiocese of New York's own archive. THE REASONING THAT FAILED IS WORTH KEEPING: godparents in an Italian parish usually are kin, and that remains true -- it is just not something this source can tell us. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Rocco Arena in the 1910 US census — confirmed absent from a second index | NEGATIVE · Result Zero results. · Reference This archive had already found him missing from the 1910 census. | Domenica Prostamo's 1951 voyage — absent from a SECOND index | NEGATIVE · Result Australia, Inward, Outward & Coastal Passenger Lists 1826-1972 holds five Prostamo and she is not among them. · Reference The NAA index does not have her; nor does FindMyPast's. The five Prostamo in the set are the same five this archive already knew -- Caterina 1969, Domenico F 1956, Francesca 1957, Francesco 1957, Rocco 1949. And a search of the same set for MAZZA arrivals between 1949 and 1953 returns NOTHING AT ALL, which suggests the set's coverage of Queensland in those years is thin rather than that she is missing from it. Two independent indexes failing the same way is a coverage problem, not a research one. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The Australian Mazza sets do not reach this family | NEGATIVE · Result Queensland parish burials hold two Mazza, neither ours. · Reference Australia, Parish Deaths & Burials 1814-2014 has an Angelo Mazza (1925-1992) and a Helen Mazza (1885-1928) in Queensland. Sebastiano Mazza, who died in 2002 and is buried at Nudgee in plot V-1026, is not in it. The Queensland Mazza of the electoral rolls and timber licences -- Toowoomba and Drayton in the 1870s, Tully in 1959 -- are a different and much older migration than this family's, which begins in 1949. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Rosa Arena and Clementina Arena of Vittoria — a different family | NEGATIVE · Result Giuseppe Verdi out of Naples, 1921. Rosa 27, b.1894, resident VITTORIA (Ragusa), father GIOVANNI; Clementina entered as her sister. · Reference Recorded so that nobody identifies them with this family again. VITTORIA is in the province of RAGUSA, at the other end of Sicily from Piedimonte Etneo and four hundred kilometres from Scilla. The Arena of that manifest have no connection to this archive beyond the surname -- which, as the Our Lady of Loretto index shows, was carried by at least twelve unrelated households in New York alone. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Rocco Arena's four crossings — all four now named, dated and with a ship | FOUND · Result 1892 ELYSIA ex Naples, aged 31; 1894 SUEVIA ex Naples, aged 33; 1900 TRAVE ex Genoa, aged 39; 1913 SAN GUGLIELMO ex Messina, aged 52. Indexed birth year 1861 on every one. · Reference The archive had these four as a list with one ship and one 'probable'. FindMyPast's passenger index gives all four with the vessel, the port and a consistent birth year of 1861 -- FOUR independent clerks over twenty-one years agreeing with the birth act of 20 December 1861. AND THE 1894 CROSSING IS NO LONGER PROBABLE. It is indexed at age THIRTY-THREE with the same birth year, on the SUEVIA out of Naples. THE 1900 RECORD SAYS SOMETHING THE ARCHIVE DID NOT KNOW: nationality US CITIZEN, residence SCILLA. He had already naturalised by March 1900 and was living at Scilla while holding American citizenship -- which is why the 1900 census, taken three months later, finds him in Manhattan with a wife and two children and calls him a citizen. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The 1913 crossing names his wife and a nephew | FOUND · Result San Guglielmo out of Messina, 1913. Rocco Arena, 52, US Citizen. DEPARTURE PORT RELATION (WIFE): CORTA GENEROSA. ARRIVAL PORT RELATION (NEPHEW): ANTONIO ARENA. · Reference THE RICHEST LINE IN THE WHOLE PASSENGER HARVEST, and it comes from a field this archive had never read: the manifest's RELATION columns, which name who a passenger left behind and who they were going to. LEFT BEHIND AT MESSINA: his wife, entered as CORTA GENEROSA -- Generosa Costa, with the surname mangled. So in 1913 Rocco sailed for New York and Generosa did not. GOING TO, IN NEW YORK: a NEPHEW called ANTONIO ARENA. Rocco's own son Antonio was born in Manhattan in 1896 and would be seventeen; a clerk could have written nephew for son, but the index is explicit. If it is right, it is a son of GIOVANNI or GIUSEPPE ARENA -- Rocco's brothers -- already established in New York by 1913, and the family tree has no such person. RECORDED AS A LEAD. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |

Arrival port relation (BROTHER-IN-LAW): Vincenzo Pisano. · Reference Checked because his age was close to the Giovanni Arena this archive wants. He is from SERRA SAN BRUNO in the province of Vibo Valentia, a hundred and thirty kilometres from Scilla, and he was going to a brother-in-law called Pisano. | Rocco Arlotta's children name his parents back — three for three | FOUND · Result Our Lady of Loretto: NICOLINA b.1901, ANTONIO b.1903, PAPPINA (Peppina) b.1904, father ROCCO in each. · Reference The strongest confirmation in the whole American harvest, and it comes from three free index rows. Rocco Arlotta's marriage act of June 1900 gives his father as ANTONIO ARLOTTA, his mother as NICOLINA CARATOZZOLA, and his wife's mother as PEPPINA FUSTO. His children, baptised at the Arena's own parish, are NICOLINA (1901), ANTONIO (1903) and PEPPINA (1904). FIRST DAUGHTER FOR THE PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER, FIRST SON FOR THE PATERNAL GRANDFATHER, SECOND DAUGHTER FOR THE MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER. Textbook southern Italian naming custom, three for three, and it proves that the man who lodged with Rocco Arena in 1900, the man who married Antonietta Tavani that June, and the man baptising children at Our Lady of Loretto are ONE MAN. TWO OTHER ARLOTTA HOUSEHOLDS ARE IN THE SAME REGISTER: a FRANCESCO Arlotta with six children between 1901 and 1911, and a GIOVANNI Arlotta with a Maria Carmela in 1896. The Arlotta were in New York in numbers, like the Arena. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |

The United States Naturalization Petitions set on FindMyPast begins too late for him. | Antonio Arena, born New York 1896, is not in the New York draft cards | NEGATIVE · Result The New York WWI registrations hold an Antonio Arena born 1876 and an «Antonio Rena» Arena born 1886. Neither is 1896. · Reference Rocco's eldest son was born in Manhattan on 4 October 1896 and was therefore an American citizen who should have registered in 1917-18. HE DID NOT, in New York. That is evidence, not just an absence: taken with Rocco's missing 1910 census entry and the 1913 manifest on which he sails WITHOUT Generosa, it says the family had gone back to Italy and the children with them. The boy born in Manhattan was living at Scilla when his own country called him up. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| ANTONIO ARENA'S BAPTISM — and the Mulberry Street address, confirmed | FOUND · Result Born 3 OCTOBER 1896, baptised 15 NOVEMBER 1896 at OUR LADY OF LORETTO, Manhattan. Father ROCCO ARENA, mother GENEROSA COSTA. RESIDENCE: 141 MULBERRY STREET. · Reference THE PAYWALL IS OPEN AND THE FIRST TRANSCRIPT SETTLED SOMETHING. This archive knew an Antonio Arena born in New York in 1896 existed -- the WWI registration row below records looking for him -- but had no act. Now it has one, and the act names BOTH PARENTS: Rocco Arena and Generosa Costa, married at Scilla in December 1888. THE ADDRESS IS THE SECOND FINDING. «141 Mulberry» is the first street address this archive has ever had for the New York household -- and it CORROBORATES THE ELLIS ISLAND MANIFEST OF 1899, where Giovanni Arena sails to join «BROTHER ROCCO, N. YORK, MULBERRY ST». Two independent documents, one street. AND IT DATES THE EMIGRATION FROM THE INSIDE: Rocco married at Scilla in December 1888, his daughter Anna was born at Scilla in January 1893, and his son Antonio was born in Manhattan in October 1896. The household crossed between those two dates -- which fits the 1892 and 1894 crossings already documented. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |

All «father Rocco Arena, mother Generosa Costa». · Reference FIVE ARENA BAPTISMS IN ALL OF NEW YORK NAME A FATHER ROCCO, AND FOUR OF THEM ARE OURS. The fifth -- GIUSEPPE, 1911, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Bronx -- gives the mother as TERESA SINISCALDI and is a different Rocco Arena entirely. Checking the mother is what separated them, and a surname sweep alone would have taken all five. TWO SONS NAMED ANTONIO, six years apart, means the first died: the same reading this archive made of Orazio Arena's two sons named Domenico at Scilla. THE ADDRESSES ARE NEW AND THEY CORROBORATE AN OLD RECORD: 141 MULBERRY in 1896 and 1898, 198 MULBERRY by 1901. The Ellis Island manifest of 1899 sends Giovanni Arena to «BROTHER ROCCO, N. Married 17 December 1899. · Reference THE TIMING WAS THE TRAP AND THE MOTHER'S NAME SPRANG IT. Rocco Arena's brother GIOVANNI landed at New York in May 1899 to join «BROTHER ROCCO, N. YORK, MULBERRY ST», and here is a «Joannem Arena» marrying at the Arena family's own parish seven months later. It is not him. Our Giovanni Arena was born at Scilla on 30 April 1854 to FRANCESCO ANTONIO ARENA and SERAFINA ARLOTTA, and he had already married CONCETTA RUSSO at Scilla in 1885, act 86. This groom's parents are Sicilian and so is his bride's town. THIS IS THE SECOND ARENA NAMESAKE THIS COLLECTION HAS OFFERED AND THE SECOND EXCLUDED ON A PARENT'S NAME -- the first was Giuseppe Arena and Teresa Siniscaldi among the baptisms. OUR LADY OF LORETTO SERVED SICILIANS AS WELL AS CALABRIANS, so a surname sweep of that parish will keep returning strangers. | SEBASTIANO MAZZA ON THE 1959 QUEENSLAND ELECTORAL ROLL — Progress Road, Wacol | FOUND · Result Sebastiano Mazza, male, BUILDER'S LABOURER, Progress Road, WACOL, sub-district INALA, district McPherson, Queensland, 1959 roll, number 3779. The only Sebastiano Mazza in the entire collection. · Reference MICHAEL MAZZA'S GRANDFATHER, IN AN AUSTRALIAN CIVIL RECORD, WITH AN ADDRESS AND A TRADE. Until now this archive held Sebastiano Mazza (1920-2002) in Australia only by his NAA passenger entry and his grave at Nudgee, plot V-1026 -- arrival and death, and nothing in between. This is the in between. WACOL AND INALA ARE THE POINT: that is the post-war migrant housing belt on Brisbane's south-west edge, built for exactly the people who arrived on the 1949 ships, and it is where he is living ten years after landing. BUILDER'S LABOURER is the trade of a man who arrived with no English and no capital. It also carries a quieter fact: HE WAS ENROLLED, and enrolment required British subject status, so his NATURALISATION falls between 1949 and 1959 and is a document that exists and has never been looked for. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| ROSARIO AND ANGELA MAZZA AT 225 LEICHHARDT STREET — one address, and a correction to how it was read | FOUND · Result ROSARIO MAZZA, SHOPKEEPER, number 1845; ANGELA MAZZA, HOME DUTIES, number 1844. Both at 225 Leichhardt Street, City, Brisbane, 1959 roll. · Reference THE ADDRESS IS THE EVIDENCE. THE ROLL NUMBERS ARE NOT, AND THIS ROW FIRST SAID THEY WERE. Both transcripts independently give 225 LEICHHARDT STREET, CITY, BRISBANE, and that co-residence is what puts Rosario and Angela in one house. THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS ROW ARGUED FROM THE NUMBERING -- 1844 and 1845 are consecutive, therefore consecutive lines, therefore one address. THAT REASONING IS WRONG AND THE CRUPI SWEEP THE SAME DAY DISPROVED IT: Antonio Crupi is 504 at DEAN STREET, Francesco Crupi is 505 at INNISFAIL ROAD, Pietro Crupi is 510 at BIRKALA -- consecutive numbers, three different addresses. THE ROLL IS ORDERED ALPHABETICALLY WITHIN A SUB-DISTRICT, not by street, so «Angela» before «Rosario» is nothing more than A before R. The conclusion survives because it never rested on the numbering in the first place; the argument for it did, and the argument was false. WHAT STANDS: Rosario Mazza, SHOPKEEPER, and Angela Mazza, HOME DUTIES, at the same street number in the same year, bearing the names of a couple this archive already holds -- ROSARIO MAZZA (1899-1986), Sebastiano's brother, and his wife ANGELA, born CRUPI and carried by the tree as «Angela Cupo». Neither transcript gives a birth year or a maiden name, so this remains a strong inference and not a proof. WHAT IT MOVES: the archive had this household at TULLY in 1926, where their daughter Carmela was born. By 1959 they are in the middle of Brisbane keeping a shop, while Angela's three brothers are still at Tully. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| ROSARIO SALVATORE MAZZA, 1949 — 191 Given Terrace, Paddington, shop assistant | FOUND · Result Rosario Salvatore Mazza, male, SHOP ASSISTANT, 191 Given Terrace, PADDINGTON, Brisbane, Queensland, 1949 roll, number 4788. · Reference THE SAME MAN TEN YEARS EARLIER, AND THE MIDDLE NAME IS WHY. Rosario Mazza (b. 1899) is the son of SALVATORE MAZZA (1879-1929), and here he is enrolled as «Rosario Salvatore». There are only two Rosario Mazza in the whole Queensland collection and this is the other one. SHOP ASSISTANT IN 1949, SHOPKEEPER IN 1959: a decade of one man's working life in two words, at two Brisbane addresses -- Paddington, then the city. IT ALSO DATES THE FAMILY'S MOVE SOUTH. Their daughter Carmela was born at TULLY in 1926; by 1949 they are in Brisbane. The move from the north Queensland cane and timber country to the city happened between those two dates. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The other Queensland Mazza of 1959 — Tully and Yelarbon, two trades, one of them a lead | FOUND · Result ANDREA MAZZA, TIMBER CUTTER, Cardwell, sub-district TULLY, district Herbert, number 1422. ANTONIO MAZZA, TOBACCO GROWER, Wyenio, YELARBON, sub-district Inglewood, district Maranoa, number 857. · Reference ANDREA MAZZA IS A LEAD AND ANTONIO IS NOT. TULLY IS STILL NOT A COINCIDENCE, BUT THE REASON GIVEN HERE FIRST WAS WRONG. This row originally argued that Rosario Mazza's daughter CARMELA was born at Tully in 1926, so a Mazza household already stood in that sub-district. THE NAA DECLARATION OF 7 DECEMBER 1937 CONTRADICTS THAT -- Carmela arrives at Brisbane aged EIGHT as an Italian alien, so she was not born at Tully and the household was not there in 1926. WHAT SURVIVES IS BETTER EVIDENCE THAN WHAT IT REPLACES: Angela Crupi's own brothers, PIETRO, ANTONIO and MARIO CRUPI, are at Tully on the 1959 roll, and she married a Mazza. The family's Tully connection is through the CRUPI, not through a birth at Tully that did not happen. No Andrea appears anywhere in this family as the tree now has it, which means either he belongs to a branch the tree has not recorded or he is a stranger with the right surname in the right town. IT CANNOT BE SETTLED FROM A ROLL, which carries no parents and no birth year. YELARBON IS FOUR HUNDRED KILOMETRES AWAY on the New South Wales border and tobacco was grown there by Italians with no connection to this family; Antonio is recorded to close him off, not to claim him. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| DOMENICA PROSTAMO IS NOT ON ANY AUSTRALIAN ELECTORAL ROLL FINDMYPAST HOLDS — under either name | NEGATIVE · Result «Domenica Mazza» returns ZERO in the collection. «Prostamo» returns ZERO across the whole of Australia, every state and every year. · Reference HER HUSBAND IS ON THE 1959 ROLL AND SHE IS NOT, AND THE ASYMMETRY IS THE FINDING. Sebastiano Mazza is enrolled at Wacol in 1959; Domenica Prostamo (1928-2010), his wife, is absent under her married name and her maiden name alike. THE LIKELY READING IS NATURALISATION, NOT ABSENCE. Enrolment required British subject status, and in Italian families of this generation THE HUSBAND WAS ROUTINELY NATURALISED FIRST and the wife years later -- she may simply not have been eligible in 1959. IT IS NOT PROOF OF THAT. The 1959 roll is the LAST Queensland year Findmypast holds, so an enrolment in 1963 or 1968 would be invisible here whatever the cause. THE ABSENCE IS BOUNDED BY THE COLLECTION, NOT BY HER LIFE. ZERO PROSTAMO IN ALL OF AUSTRALIA also means her father Francesco and her brothers are unreachable in this set. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| What Findmypast's «Australia Electoral Rolls» actually covers for Queensland — eight years, ending 1959 | METHOD · Result QUEENSLAND: commonwealth rolls for 1903, 1906, 1913, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1949 and 1959 only, plus state rolls 1860-1884 and 1895-1915. 45% have images. Other states are thinner still: Western Australia 1939/1943/1949, Tasmania 1916/1934/1943, South Australia 1939/1941/1943, New South Wales 1903/1913/1935. · Reference THIS DEFLATES THE INSTRUMENT AND THE WORK LIST SHOULD SAY SO. Rows 49 and 62 promoted electoral rolls as the answer to a family the Queensland BDM indexes cannot see, on the ground that the rolls are NEAR-ANNUAL and would place every household YEAR BY YEAR. That is true of the rolls as they exist. IT IS NOT TRUE OF FINDMYPAST'S HOLDING OF THEM. For a migration that lands in 1949 there are exactly TWO Queensland years in this collection, 1949 and 1959, and the family had barely arrived for the first. ONE USABLE YEAR. The rolls remain the right instrument; Findmypast is not the right holder of them for this family. The full near-annual run is at the National Library of Australia and on Ancestry, and getting past 1959 means one of those. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The Findmypast results URL silently corrupts searches when a parameter is wrong — in two different ways | METHOD · Result VERIFIED PARAMETERS: datasetname, lastname, firstname, and the sort pair o= and d=. UNRECOGNISED ONES DO ONE OF TWO THINGS. «state=Queensland» and «page=2» render a filter chip and report «0 results found». «street=progress road» is discarded in silence and the unfiltered count comes back unchanged. · Reference BOTH FAILURES LOOK LIKE ANSWERS AND NEITHER IS. A wrong parameter that ZEROES the count produces a page word for word identical to a genuine negative -- «0 results found» and the same advice to broaden the search -- and this archive writes negatives down as evidence. «state=Queensland» returned zero on a search whose unfiltered form plainly listed Queensland rows, which is the only reason it was caught. A wrong parameter that is IGNORED is the opposite danger: the search you believe you ran is not the search that ran, and the result is real but answers a different question. THE RULE: never record a negative from a parameter that has not been control-tested against a search known to return rows. The earlier «fathersfirstname» for «fatherfirstname» was the ignored kind. PAGINATION HAS NO URL FORM AT ALL -- sort on a column with o= and d= to bring the rows you want onto the first page instead. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| THE CRUPI OF TULLY — seven of them on one page of the 1959 roll, with trades and addresses | FOUND · Result Numbers 504-510 in the Tully sub-district: ANTONIO, cane farmer, Dean Street; FRANCESCO, mechanic, Innisfail Road; GIOVANNA, home duties, Feluga; MARIA, home duties, no address; MARIO, lorry driver, no address; NELLIE, home duties, Dean Street; PIETRO, lorry driver, Birkala via Tully. · Reference THIS IS ANGELA CRUPI'S FAMILY AND THE ARCHIVE COULD NOT PLACE THEM UNTIL NOW. The Queensland death index gave PIETRO (d. 1961), ANTONINO (d. 1982) and MARIO CRUPI (d. 1989) as her brothers, all three sons of FRANCESCO CRUPI and MARIA VECCHIO; the Brisbane cemetery registers then returned NOTHING for any of them, council and Catholic alike. THE ROLLS FIND THEM ALIVE INSTEAD, AND THEY ARE ALL AT TULLY. Pietro's last enrolment is 1959 and he died in July 1961. ONE COUPLE IS EVIDENCED: Antonio the cane farmer and Nellie both give DEAN STREET TULLY, and a shared address is the thing that pairs them. MARIA AND MARIO ARE NOT EVIDENCED as a couple -- both transcripts leave the address blank, so their adjacency proves nothing. FRANCESCO IS PROBABLY A NEPHEW, NOT THE FATHER: Angela's father Francesco Crupi would have been about eighty-five in 1959 and this one is a working mechanic, so he is far more likely a grandson named for him in the ordinary way. THE BROTHERS STAYED NORTH AND THEIR SISTER CAME SOUTH: Angela is in Brisbane with Rosario Mazza in the same year. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The Crupi a decade earlier, and the trades that changed — 1949 | FOUND · Result ANTONIO CRUPI, BOOTMAKER, Bryant Street, Tully. MARIO CRUPI, BUS DRIVER, Mena Creek, sub-district INNISFAIL. A SECOND ANTONIO CRUPI, FARMER, Silkwood East, Innisfail, on the 1959 roll — a different man from the Tully cane farmer. · Reference TEN YEARS CHANGES EVERY TRADE IN THIS FAMILY. Antonio is a BOOTMAKER at Bryant Street in 1949 and a CANE FARMER at Dean Street in 1959 -- he left a craft for the land, which is the opposite of the usual migrant direction and worth noticing. Mario is a BUS DRIVER at Mena Creek in the Innisfail sub-district in 1949 and a LORRY DRIVER at Tully in 1959, so he moved south into his brothers' district. THE SECOND ANTONIO IS A WARNING, NOT A FINDING: there are at least two Antonio Crupi in north Queensland in 1959, one farming at Silkwood East in Innisfail and one at Tully, and NOTHING IN A ROLL DISTINGUISHES THEM -- no parents, no birth year. Which one is Angela's brother Antonino, dead in 1982, cannot be settled here. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| POLISTENA and ROCCO ARENA are on no Australian electoral roll Findmypast holds | NEGATIVE · Result «Polistena» returns ZERO across the whole of Australia. «Rocco Arena» returns ZERO. The surname Arena returns 172, none of them this family: the Queensland Arena are a Cloncurry family enrolled from 1898 to 1934. · Reference THE PATTERN ACROSS FOUR PEOPLE IS THE FINDING, NOT ANY ONE ABSENCE. Of the adults who arrived in 1949, ONLY SEBASTIANO MAZZA is enrolled by 1959. ROCCO ARENA is not. ANGELA POLISTENA, who married him, is not -- under either name. Her brother ANTONINO POLISTENA, who came on the Surriento in June 1949, is not. DOMENICA PROSTAMO is not. Enrolment required British subject status, so the clean reading is that SEBASTIANO WAS NATURALISED EARLY AND THE OTHERS WERE NOT YET. IT IS NOT PROVED, because 1959 is the last Queensland year in this collection and a naturalisation in 1960 or 1964 would be invisible here whatever happened. THE ABSENCES ARE BOUNDED BY THE COLLECTION AND NOT BY THEIR LIVES, and that sentence is the whole value of this row. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| MELLUSO and ANILE — nothing for either in Australia | NEGATIVE · Result «Melluso» returns ZERO across all of Australia. «Anile» returns TWO, both in WESTERN AUSTRALIA on the 1949 roll: Concetta Anile and Rosario Anile. · Reference BOTH NAMES BELONG TO THE CALABRIAN SIDE AND NEITHER REACHES QUEENSLAND HERE. MARIA ROSA MELLUSO is Domenica Prostamo's mother and DOMENICA ANILE is of the Briatico line; this family settled in BRISBANE, and the only Anile in the collection are two people in Western Australia, four thousand kilometres away, whose 1949 enrolment means they were naturalised long before this family landed. RECORDED TO CLOSE THEM OFF. Neither is a lead. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| TWO SURNAME CLUSTERS IN QUEENSLAND THAT THIS ARCHIVE HAS NOT OPENED — Donato and Nicotra | FOUND · Result DONATO: 65 results, with a Queensland block including CANDELORE DONATO (1941, 1949), CANDO DONATO (1939, 1959), DOMENICO DONATO (1959), ANNUNZIATO, CONCETTA and DOMINICO. NICOTRA: 39 results, almost all Queensland — FILIPPO (1934-1959), GREGORIO (1939-1959), GIUSEPPE, CARMELA, LEONARDA and LEONARD (1934-1959). · Reference TWO NAMES OFF THIS FAMILY'S OWN SPINE, IN NUMBERS, IN THE RIGHT STATE, AND NOBODY HAS LOOKED. CANDELORO DONATO IS ONE OF THIS ARCHIVE'S FOUR WALLS -- born about 1783 at Scilla, the point where the Donato quarter stops -- and a CANDELORE DONATO is enrolled in Queensland in 1941 and 1949. He is obviously not the same man. THAT IS THE POINT: southern Italian families name a grandson for his grandfather, so a Candeloro Donato in Queensland is what a DESCENDANT of the wall looks like from the other side of the world. DOMENICO DONATO is the name of the man whose 1816 birth act came out of the Scilla processetti this week. NICOTRA IS SEBASTIANO MAZZA'S MOTHER'S NAME -- Maria Concetta Nicotra -- and there is a Nicotra family enrolled continuously in Queensland from 1934 to 1959. NEITHER CLUSTER IS CLAIMED HERE. A roll carries no parents and no birth year, so none of this can be attached from the rolls alone; both are written down as leads with a route, not as findings. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| Two things that make a Findmypast sweep cheap — and one bad inference they exposed | METHOD · Result javascript_tool WORKS on both the results page and the transcript page, returning every row with its /transcript?id= href in ONE page load, and the full transcript as plain text. The rolls are ordered ALPHABETICALLY BY GIVEN NAME within a surname within a sub-district. · Reference THE FIRST HALVES THE COST OF EVERY FUTURE SWEEP. Clicking result rows does nothing useful -- the name is not a link and ref-clicks do not register -- and pagination has no URL form at all. But one javascript_exec over «a[href*=/transcript?id=]» returns the whole page of results with hrefs, and the same call on a transcript returns every field as text, with no screenshots and no zooming. THE SECOND KILLED AN INFERENCE I HAD ALREADY WRITTEN DOWN. Seeing Angela Mazza at 1844 and Rosario at 1845, both at 225 Leichhardt Street, I recorded that CONSECUTIVE ROLL NUMBERS MEAN ONE ADDRESS. The Crupi disprove it flatly: 504 Antonio at DEAN STREET, 505 Francesco at INNISFAIL ROAD, 510 Pietro at BIRKALA -- consecutive, three addresses, and the sequence is simply Antonio, Francesco, Giovanna, Maria, Mario, Nellie, Pietro in alphabetical order. THE ADDRESS IS THE EVIDENCE OF A HOUSEHOLD; THE NUMBERING IS EVIDENCE OF NOTHING. The Leichhardt Street row has been corrected in place. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| THE UGOLINO VIVALDI CANDIDATE — Findmypast could not test it, and the manifest then killed it | NEGATIVE · Result «Domenico Mazza», 1951, arrival 01 MAR 1951, ship UGOLINO VIVALDI, Genoa to Australia, BARCODE 30133197 — the identical NAA barcode this archive already carries. No age, no sex, no birth year, no other field the index did not already give. · Reference ROW 100 ASKED WHETHER THE SUBSCRIPTION COULD SETTLE DOMENICA PROSTAMO'S CROSSING. IT CANNOT, AND THE BARCODE IS THE PROOF. The archive graded this crossing «candidate» on a careful argument: right month, right year, right port of embarkation, right MARRIED surname, and a given name one letter out -- «Domenico» for Domenica. WHAT WOULD LIFT IT TO DOCUMENTED IS AN AGE OR A SEX, and this transcript has neither, because it is not a second witness. It is the SAME NAA INDEX ENTRY, item 30133197, re-served under a Findmypast id. THE CANDIDATE GRADE DID NOT STAND. THE ROUTE THAT WOULD SETTLE IT IS FREE AND IS NOT THIS ONE: the transcript links straight to the NAA's own image viewer for barcode 30133197, and the ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANIFEST would show the age, the sex, and everyone else travelling on that page -- including, if the family account is right, a two-year-old Salvatore. FOLLOW-UP, THE SAME DAY: the NAA image was opened and it settles the question in the negative. The master list carries ONE Mazza, bound for NARRACAN, VICTORIA, landing at MELBOURNE and absent from the Fremantle debarkation schedule; there is no Prostamo aboard and no second Mazza. THE IDENTIFICATION IS RETRACTED. This row is kept because it was right about the instrument -- a subscription re-serving the same index could never have answered it, and the free image could. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| For twentieth-century Australian arrivals, Findmypast IS the NAA index — not a second source | METHOD · Result Every post-1945 row in «Australia, Inward, Outward & Coastal Passenger Lists 1826-1972» carries an id of the form ANZ/AUSPASS/NAA/xxxxxxxxx, a NAA BARCODE, and a link to recordsearch.naa.gov.au. The pre-1940 rows are different material — ANZ/VCPL and ANZ/MIGR/VICTORIAPASSLIST, the Victorian inward, outward and coastal lists. · Reference THIS DEFLATES ROW 100 THE WAY THE COVERAGE FINDING DEFLATED ROW 99. The row hoped a full subscription would let the nine unnamed crossings be swept properly and the Ugolino Vivaldi candidate tested. BUT THE AUSTRALIAN ARRIVALS HERE ARE THE NAA PASSENGER INDEX, WHICH THIS ARCHIVE HAS ALREADY WORKED DIRECTLY AND FOR NOTHING. A name absent from the NAA index is absent from Findmypast, and a name present carries the same fields. THE SUBSCRIPTION ADDS TWO THINGS AND ONLY TWO: a far better SEARCH over that index -- wildcards, given-name matching and a real year filter, none of which the NAA's own interface does well -- and the VICTORIAN LISTS, which are genuinely not in the NAA index and which cover 1852-1923. THE VICTORIAN LISTS ARE THE PART WORTH MINING and no row has ever asked for them. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| ROCCO PROSTAMO, 10 August 1949 — a Prostamo crossing this archive has never held | FOUND · Result Mr Rocco Prostamo, arrival 10 AUG 1949, ship NAPOLI, Genoa to MELBOURNE, Victoria. NAA barcode 9245827. · Reference A SIXTH PROSTAMO IN THE INDEX, AND THE FIRST NOBODY HERE HAS SEEN. The archive holds five -- Domenica (candidate, 1951), Domenico F (1956), Francesca and Francesco (1957), Caterina (1969) -- and this one is new. HE LANDS IN AUGUST 1949, TWO MONTHS BEFORE SEBASTIANO MAZZA came in on the Toscana and two months after the Polistena came in on the Surriento. HE IS NOT IN THE TREE. Domenica Prostamo's brothers are Domenico, Antonio Giacomo and Alfonso; her father was Francesco. NO ROCCO. He is an uncle, a cousin, or an unrelated Prostamo from the same small comune -- Briatico is not big, and the surname is concentrated there, which makes a relation likely and proves nothing. NOTE HE GOES TO MELBOURNE, not Fremantle or Brisbane, so he is not obviously travelling to this family. RECORDED AS A LEAD. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The year filter on Findmypast is «eventyear», and «year» is one of the parameters that lies | METHOD · Result «year=1898» returns ZERO on a search whose unfiltered form plainly contains 1898 rows. «eventyear=1898» returns TWELVE. The sort keys, read out of the page's own column headers, are firstname, lastname, yearofbirth, EVENTYEAR, departureport and destinationport. · Reference CAUGHT BY THE RULE WRITTEN EARLIER THE SAME DAY, AND IT WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE PRODUCED A PUBLISHED FALSEHOOD. The first search run against this collection was «lastname=mazza&year=1951», which returned «No results found» -- and the conclusion sitting ready to be written was that NO MAZZA ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA IN 1951. The control test on a year known to hold rows showed the parameter itself was dead. THE TRUE ANSWER IS SIXTY-THREE MAZZA IN 1951, one of them the Ugolino Vivaldi entry this archive has been arguing about for weeks. THE SORT KEYS ARE WORTH KEEPING because they are also the filter names, and they can be read straight off the page rather than guessed. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| ROCCO ARENA ENTERS THE AMERICAN CENSUS ONCE, IN 1900, AND NEVER APPEARS AGAIN | FOUND · Result 1900: EXACTLY ONE Rocco Arena in the whole United States — born 1861, Italy, New York — and he is ours. 1910: ZERO. 1920: two, born 1883 and 1913. 1930: six, the earliest born 1882. None of the later ones can be him. · Reference THIS TURNS A GAP INTO A FINDING, AND THE CONTROL IS WHAT MAKES IT ONE. The archive already knew Rocco Arena was missing from the 1910 census where it expected him. THAT IS A WEAKER STATEMENT THAN IT SOUNDS -- a man can be missed, misspelt, or enumerated in the wrong ward. What is checked here is the whole country: 543 ARENA households are indexed in the 1910 census and NOT ONE HOLDS A ROCCO. Nor a GENEROSA, nor a SERAFINA, nor a CLEMENTINA. AND THE SAME SEARCH FINDS HIM IN 1900 ON THE FIRST TRY, one hit, right birth year, right state -- so the instrument works and the absence is real. THREE INDEPENDENT ABSENCES NOW POINT THE SAME WAY, and they were found by three different routes: no census entry after 1900, no Generosa on the 1913 manifest he sailed on, and no New York draft registration for the son born in Manhattan in 1896. THE HOUSEHOLD WENT HOME TO SCILLA, and the boy born on Mulberry Street was living in Italy when America called up his year. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The naturalisation is still not found, and the census now says where to look for it | NEGATIVE · Result No Rocco Arena in the United States Naturalization Petitions set on Findmypast; that collection begins too late for him. Nothing in the censuses of 1910, 1920 or 1930. · Reference HE SAILED AS A US CITIZEN IN 1913, SO THE PAPERS EXIST. WHAT IS NEW IS THE DATE THEY MUST FALL BETWEEN. He is in America from 1892, he is in the 1900 census, and he is gone from the country by 1910 -- so HIS DECLARATION AND PETITION WERE FILED IN NEW YORK BETWEEN 1892 AND ROUGHLY 1906. THAT IS BEFORE THE FEDERAL SYSTEM WAS STANDARDISED in 1906, which is precisely why the Findmypast collection cannot see him: it begins after the period in which he must have filed. PRE-1906 NATURALISATIONS WERE HEARD IN STATE, COUNTY AND CITY COURTS as well as federal ones, and for New York City they are covered by a NARA index to petitions filed in New York courts, 1792-1906, on microfilm and not on any subscription site. NO SUBSCRIPTION WILL FIND THIS MAN. It is the National Archives at New York City, and the search is now bounded to a fourteen-year window instead of a lifetime. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| GIOVANNI ARENA BAPTISED NO CHILD IN NEW YORK WITH CONCETTA RUSSO | NEGATIVE · Result Father GIOVANNI + mother CONCETTA, surname Arena: ZERO. There are EIGHT Arena baptisms with a father Giovanni — at Mount Carmel, Immaculate Conception, Mary Help of Christians and one at Our Lady of Loretto — and NOT ONE has a mother Concetta. The control ran first: father ROCCO + mother GENEROSA returns EXACTLY the four known children and nothing else. · Reference ROCCO'S BROTHER CAME TO JOIN HIM AND LEFT NO FAMILY IN THE PARISH REGISTERS. Giovanni Arena landed at New York in May 1899 for «BROTHER ROCCO, N. YORK, MULBERRY ST». He had married CONCETTA RUSSO at Scilla in 1885, act 86, so any child of his baptised in New York would name her. NONE DOES. THE READING IS SOJOURNING, NOT SETTLEMENT: he came alone and his wife stayed at Scilla, which is what most of these men did, and money went home instead of families coming out. IT FITS WHAT THE CENSUS SAYS ABOUT HIS BROTHER -- Rocco's whole household is gone from America by 1910. THE CONTROL IS WHY THIS COUNTS. Run on Rocco and Generosa the same search returns the four children this archive found last week, exactly and only those, so the instrument reads parents correctly and the zero for Giovanni is real. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| NO ARENA MARRIAGE AT OUR LADY OF LORETTO CAN BELONG TO THIS FAMILY — by arithmetic, not by guesswork | NEGATIVE · Result Seven Arena marriages at Our Lady of Loretto, 1897 to 1913: Rasolino 1897, Joannem 1899, Ignatium 1901, Aloissiam 1905, Joannem 1907, Paulum 1909, Calagerum 1913. The 1899 one was read and is a PALERMO family — father Thomae Arena, mother Angelicae Coglitore, bride of Polizzi Generosa. · Reference THE WHOLE SET IS EXCLUDED WITHOUT READING SIX OF THEM, AND THE ARGUMENT IS CLOSED RATHER THAN PROBABLE. This family's Arena men in New York were TWO, and BOTH WERE ALREADY MARRIED BEFORE THEY EVER SAILED: Rocco to Generosa Costa at Scilla in December 1888, Giovanni to Concetta Russo at Scilla in 1885. NEITHER COULD MARRY AT LORETTO. And their children cannot either -- the eldest, Antonio, was born in October 1896, and the household was out of the United States by 1910, so no child of Rocco's was of marriageable age in America at any point in this window. THERE IS NO ONE LEFT TO BE THE GROOM OR THE BRIDE. The given names support it without carrying it: Rosolino, Ignazio and Calogero are SICILIAN names, and the one marriage actually read is a Palermo family, which says again that Loretto served Sicilians as well as Calabrians. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| There is no New York Roman Catholic BURIALS collection — so the first Antonio's death cannot be tested here | NEGATIVE · Result «new york roman catholic parish burials» returns a 500 error: the set does not exist. «Congregational Records» resolves but is empty — zero Arena, and zero RUSSO, one of the commonest Italian surnames in New York. The Catholic Heritage Archive for New York is BAPTISMS AND MARRIAGES ONLY. · Reference ROW 98 ASSUMED «MARRIAGES AND BURIALS» AND THERE ARE NO BURIALS. THIS MATTERS FOR ONE SPECIFIC CLAIM. This archive holds that Rocco Arena's first son ANTONIO, born 3 October 1896, DIED IN INFANCY -- inferred from the second son given the same name on 13 October 1902, the same reading made of Orazio Arena's two sons called Domenico at Scilla. THE INFERENCE IS SOUND AND IT IS STILL AN INFERENCE, and a burial record would settle it. THERE IS NO SUCH RECORD TO SEARCH HERE. Where it would be: the NEW YORK CITY DEATH CERTIFICATES held by the Municipal Archives, which are indexed 1862-1948 and are free to search, or the interment registers of CALVARY CEMETERY, where the Italian Catholic dead of lower Manhattan mostly went. NEITHER IS A SUBSCRIPTION SITE AND NEITHER HAS BEEN TRIED. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
| The Victorian passenger lists hold nothing for this family — and the reason is what they are | NEGATIVE · Result «Victoria Coastal Passenger Lists 1852-1924» is DOMESTIC SHIPPING between Australian ports, and most of its rows carry NO GIVEN NAME AT ALL — the sample read is «Mazza, male, b. 1872, married, age 19, Strahan to Melbourne on the Bellinger, 14 December 1891». The identifiable pre-1925 Mazza in the outward lists are recorded as BRITISH. CONTROL: «Michele Mazza, 1925, Messina to Brisbane» is returned on the first try, so the collection does hold this family's one pre-war arrival. · Reference ROW 111 GUESSED THAT THESE LISTS MIGHT CATCH A MAN WHO WORKED A PASSAGE OUT AND WENT HOME AGAIN, and it was worth an hour to find out. IT DOES NOT, FOR TWO REASONS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS FAMILY. The bulk of the Victorian material is COASTAL -- Strahan to Melbourne, Fremantle to Melbourne -- which is people already in Australia moving about it, not people arriving from Italy. AND THE COASTAL ROWS ARE MOSTLY NAMELESS, carrying a surname, a sex and an age and no given name, so even a genuine ancestor there could not be recognised. THE OVERSEAS VICTORIAN ROWS THAT DO CARRY NAMES ARE BRITISH SUBJECTS. THE CONTROL IS WHAT MAKES THIS A NEGATIVE RATHER THAN A SHRUG: searched for by name, MICHELE MAZZA'S 1925 CROSSING FROM MESSINA TO BRISBANE COMES BACK IMMEDIATELY -- the arrival this archive already documents. The collection can see this family when it is there. BEFORE 1925 IT IS NOT THERE, and the Australian story still begins where this archive has always said it begins. | FindMyPast — the New York years New York County |
