What is recorded

Nothing but a name and a place in the family. This person is known only because somebody else's record names them.

Where this comes from

3 of the 10 relationships drawn above have been proved by a record this archive has read. The other 7 come from Michael Mazza's family tree and have not.

3 records have been read about them:

What a register says about this person, which the tree does not.

MARIA NICOTRA'S FATHER, and the man the Queensland death registration of 1963 calls «John Nicotra» and nothing else. Here he is in his own act: «sono comparsi GIOVANNI NICOTRA, di anni trentuno, di professione bracciante, DOMICILIATO E RESIDENTE A MASCALI, figlio di ROSARIO, di professione bracciante, e di VENERA MURABITO, contadina, domiciliati e residenti PURE IN MASCALI». HE IS NOT A PIEDIMONTE MAN. He married into the town and lived in the next one, which is why fourteen consecutive Piedimonte birth indexes produced no daughter of his.

A father six years younger in three years — TWO DECLARED AGES THAT DO NOT AGREE. «Di anni TRENTUNO» at his marriage on 7 October 1872, which puts his birth about 1841; «di anni VENTOTTO» at his daughter Maria's birth on 10 December 1875, which puts it about 1847. Six years the wrong way in three. KEPT AS A CONFLICT rather than averaged: his own birth act at Mascali, in either 1841 or 1847, would settle it and would carry his parents Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito independently. The identification of the two men does NOT rest on the age -- it rests on the wife, VENERA CASSANITI, named in both acts, and on the comune.

Age — two acts disagree by five years — THE TWO ACTS THAT NAME HIM GIVE AGES THAT CANNOT BOTH BE RIGHT. Piedimonte Matrimoni 1872 atto 20 makes him THIRTY-ONE in October 1872, so born about 1841. Mascali Nati 1873 atto 145 makes him TWENTY-SIX in December 1873, so born about 1847. He should be thirty-two by the second act and is declared six years younger. It is the same man — the wife is VENERA CASSANITI FU GAETANO in both, aged twenty-four in each, and the father is ROSARIO in both — so this is a declared age and not a different household. This archive's own audit says declared ages run one to four years out as a matter of routine; six is past that, and NEITHER YEAR IS ADOPTED. His birth is between about 1841 and about 1847 and the register that would settle it is Giarre, where he says he was born.

Where the two disagree, the chart above still draws the tree as it stands. This archive does not silently rewrite what it was given — the acts are here.
