1 of the 16 relationships drawn here have been proved by a record; the other 15 come from Michael Mazza's family tree and have not. The colour on each edge says which is which, and it is drawn per edge so that one proved link cannot vouch for the rest. The method →

One or more of the lines above is contradicted by a record this archive has read.
  • giovanna pontillo — Act 206 of 1883 names his mother GIOVANNA ROMANO, and the New Orleans manifest of 1908 -- taken from his own statement -- names her Giovanna Romano again. Two independent records on two continents.

The chart still draws the family tree exactly as it was given. This archive does not silently rewrite someone else's research — it marks the edge and shows its working.

Where this comes from

1 of the 16 relationships drawn above have been proved by a record this archive has read. The other 15 come from Michael Mazza's family tree and have not.

4 records have been read about them:

What a register says about this person, which the tree does not.

The tree gives his mother as Giovanna Pontillo. SETTLED, AND NOT IN THE TREE'S FAVOUR: act 206 of 1883 names her GIOVANNA ROMANO, and the New Orleans manifest of 22 February 1908 -- taken from his own statement at twenty-four, half a world from Scilla -- names 'father Antonino Polistena and mother Giovanna Romano'. Two independent records, two continents. He also has a crossing the tree does not record: the S.S. Liguria out of Palermo, bound for Quincy, Florida, on the line immediately after Michele Donato -- whose daughter he would marry about eight years later.

Parentage — His mother is GIOVANNA ROMANO, not Giovanna Pontillo. SETTLED BY TWO INDEPENDENT RECORDS: act 206 of 1883 names her Giovanna Romano, and the New Orleans manifest of 1908 -- filled in from Giovanni's own statement, twenty-five years later and half a world away -- names 'father Antonino Polistena and mother Giovanna Romano, Scilla'. The father is the same man under three spellings: Camillo Antonio in the act, Antonio in the tree, Antonino on the manifest.

Crossing -- missing entirely — He sailed from PALERMO on the S.S. LIGURIA on 22 February 1908, reaching NEW ORLEANS, bound for QUINCY, FLORIDA -- on the line immediately after Michele Donato, whose daughter he would marry about eight years later. Aged 24, single, a sailor.

A second migration, twenty years and half a world apart — HE MAY HAVE GONE TO AUSTRALIA TOO. NAA: BP9/3, ITALIAN POLISTENA G -- the Brisbane aliens register -- reads «Polistena, GIOVANNI BORN 1883 - nationality Italian - arrived in BRISBANE on the ORMONDE 21 FEBRUARY 1928». This archive's Giovanni Polistena was born at Scilla in 1883 (act 206), sailed from PALERMO to NEW ORLEANS on the LIGURIA in February 1908 on the line immediately after Michele Donato, married Michele's daughter Nunziata about 1916, and named a daughter Santa at Scilla in 1920. A crossing to Brisbane in 1928 sits after all of that and would explain how this family reached Queensland at all. THE YEAR OF BIRTH MATCHES EXACTLY AND THE PORT IS THE RIGHT ONE. IT IS STILL A CANDIDATE: the register entry carries no parents and no birthplace, and POLISTENA is a comune in Reggio Calabria as well as a surname, so the name alone proves nothing. The test is the item itself, or any Queensland record placing him there in the 1930s.

Where the two disagree, the chart above still draws the tree as it stands. This archive does not silently rewrite what it was given — the acts are here.

Others of the same name

These three towns repeat their names relentlessly — this archive holds four men called Rosario Mazza and four called Giuseppe Arena. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one. Why →
