The Mazza
The surname this archive is named for is also the most fragmented thing in it. A hundred and twenty Mazza sit in six groups that no record joins to each other.
The marriage, and then the birth: two acts close the deepest Sicilian generation
The parish register was the wrong door. It was browsed to the right year and it held nothing, and the reason turned out to be simple enough to be embarrassing: civil registration began in the south in 1866, so a marriage of about 1870 is a civil act, kept by the comune and now on the Antenati portal — and the civil act is the one that names all four parents.
The annual index of the Piedimonte Etneo marriages of 1871 gives, in a clerk's hand, Mazza Rosario / Bonanno Leonarda — numero di registro 14. Here is the act.

Anna Cavallaro, and a generation the tree does not have
Leonarda Bonanno has stood in this archive as a name with a father's first name attached — daughter of Gaetano, taken from a marriage proclamation of 1910. The act of 1871 gives her both parents: Gaetano Bonanno and Anna Cavallaro. They are the Bonanno equal of Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano, and like them they are entirely absent from the family tree.
And then his birth, to the day
With the parents fixed, the birth was worth hunting. The Piedimonte birth registers run from 1820 on Antenati, and every volume ends with a table of the whole year's births in act order, giving the child, the comune, both parents and the day — six openings for a year. The table for 1845, at entry 64, reads: Mazza Rosario — Piedimonte — Mazza Mariano / Catalano Maria.

Put the three acts side by side and the deepest Sicilian generation is no longer an inference from anything. Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano are named as Rosario's parents in his birth act of 1845, in his marriage act of 1871, and in his death act of 1924 — three registers, seventy-nine years apart, one couple. The birth act also does what neither of the others could: it dates them, both at thirty-six in June 1845, so both born about 1809.
One honest note. The marriage act enters Rosario as d'anni ventisei — twenty-six — and his birth act makes him twenty-five and eleven months on the day. Declared ages in these registers are routinely a year out; the birth act is the one to believe.
One generation further — probable, and not written down as fact
With the birth act in hand, the next question is Mariano's own marriage. The Piedimonte marriage indexes were read for sixteen consecutive years, 1830 to 1845 — about three hundred and fifty marriages. In all of them there is exactly one groom called Mazza Mariano: act 17 of 1836. Here is the act itself.
A correction of this archive's own
The index column was read on this page as “Mazza Orazio”. The act says Ignazio, in a clearer hand, and the act wins. Which means the argument that was built on the other reading — that Rosario named a son Orazio, so Orazio was a name running in the family — is withdrawn. It was an argument from a misreading of a single word, and it is the second time on this site that a theory has been built before the reading was checked. The rule, again: when a record does not fit, re-read your own hand first.
What the act settles, and what it does not
For. He is the only Mazza Mariano groom in sixteen years of an otherwise complete register. He is a bracciale, exactly as in 1845. He is Piedimonte-born, as in 1845. The surname Catalano is right. And the bride's age fits: twenty-eight in September 1836 is a birth about 1808, and Rosario's mother is thirty-six in June 1845, a birth about 1809.
Against. The bride is Agata here and Maria in both of Rosario's acts. And the groom's age is three years out — thirty in 1836 gives 1806, where 1845 gives 1809.
Probable, not proven. Ignazio Mazza and Giuseppa Pulvirenti are not drawn on any chart here and are not counted among the documented additions. The cleanest test would have been the processetti — the spouses' own birth certificates, filed with the marriage. Piedimonte has twenty such volumes and they run 1841 to 1860. There is no 1836. That route is closed; what is left is Mariano's own birth act, which would be somewhere in the Piedimonte births from 1820 under Ignazio Mazza and Giuseppa Pulvirenti, or his death act.
Leonarda, to the day — and two more people dated
The same method run on the bride's side. Entry 101 of the Piedimonte births of 1843: Bonanno Leonarda — Piedimonte — Bonanno Gaetano / Cavallaro Anna. The act has her born 7 November 1843 at eight in the morning, in her parents' house, declared the next day by Gaetano Bonanno, thirty-six, a bracciale, with Anna Cavallaro, thirty-eight. So Gaetano was born about 1807 and Anna about 1805 — and Leonarda was twenty-seven when she married, not the twenty-six her marriage act gives her. That is the third declared age on this page to come out a year or more wrong.
Two searches that came back empty, and are worth as much
Rosario has no brothers or sisters at Piedimonte. The birth registers of 1844, 1845, 1846 and 1847 have now been read entire — something over five hundred births. Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano appear in exactly one of them: Rosario, act 64 of 1845. Nothing in the two years before him, nothing in the two after.
Gaetano Bonanno did not marry at Piedimonte. Eighteen consecutive years of marriage indexes, 1828 to 1845, hold no Gaetano Bonanno among the grooms — three Bonanno women marrying out, and no Bonanno man. He was born about 1807, so a marriage before 1828 would have him under twenty-one. The likelier reading is that he married in Anna Cavallaro's own comune and the couple settled at Piedimonte after — which is exactly what the Mazza marriage of 1836 shows happening the other way about, with a bride brought in from Macchia.
A question that would join two threads of this archive
The only other Mazza births in those four years belong to one couple: Innocenzio Mazza and Domenica Cavallaro — an Alfio at act 90 of 1845, a Sebastiana at act 31 of 1847. This archive already knows them from the other end: the Piedimonte marriage acts of 1874 and 1876 make both Antonino Mazza and Salvatore Mazza figlio d'Innocenzio e di Domenica Cavallaro.
And the marriage act of 1836 makes Mariano Mazza the son of an Ignazio. Ignazio and Innocenzio are not the same name — but a man called Ignazio with a son called Innocenzio is entirely ordinary, and if Innocenzio and Mariano were brothers, the other Piedimonte Mazza in this archive are Rosario's first cousins and two separate threads become one family.
Not a finding. The test is Innocenzio's own marriage act, which would name his father. It is not in the Piedimonte indexes for 1825–1845 — in twenty-one years the only Mazza groom is Mariano in 1836 — so Innocenzio married before 1825, or in another comune. The same door the Bonanno went out of.
Twenty-six years, and one Mazza groom
The marriage indexes have since been read for every year from 1820 — the first civil volume that exists at Piedimonte — to 1845. Twenty-six consecutive years, something over five hundred marriages. There is exactly one groom called Mazza in all of them, and he is Mariano, act 17 of 1836.
That cuts two ways. It strengthens the identification above — the objection was never that a rival candidate existed, and now there demonstrably is none. And it closes a door: Innocenzio Mazza did not marry at Piedimonte either, so the question of whether he and Mariano were brothers cannot be answered from this series at all. He married before 1820, which is parish-only, or in another comune.
And one target that can be struck off
Mariano Mazza is thirty in the marriage act of 1836 and thirty-six in his son's birth act of 1845, so he was born about 1806–09. Civil registration at Piedimonte begins in 1820. His birth act does not exist and never did — his baptism is a parish record, in the books of the Chiesa Maggiore, and the Acireale diocesan films are the only place it can be. The same is true of Gaetano Bonanno (b. c.1807), Anna Cavallaro (b. c.1805), and Giuseppa Pulvirenti, who was sixty in 1836 and so born about 1776.
How few the Mazza were
A negative worth writing down, because it changes what to expect. The Piedimonte birth registers of 1844 and 1846 were read entire — 128 births in one year, 146 in the other — and contain no Mazza at all. 1845 contains two: Rosario, and an Alfio Mazza at act 90, son of Innocenzo Mazza and Domenica Cavallaro. Across the sixteen years of marriages the Mazza appear four times, three of them as brides. The Mazza were a small family at Piedimonte, not a numerous one — which makes it less likely, not more, that the 10 unjoined Mazza in the tree are cousins from there.
What is now cheap that was not
Fifty volumes of Piedimonte births, 1820 to 1863, are now written down with their arks. Because each year's table lists both parents and not only the child, it is a finding aid for a couple: reading the parents column down a year finds every child Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano had in it. Rosario's brothers and sisters, and the generation above Mariano, are a sweep away rather than a search.
Rosario Mazza's death act, and the name line stops being an inference
The Mazza are this archive's namesake and its oldest unfinished business. The Calabrian work ran hot for a fortnight while Piedimonte Etneo sat untouched. One afternoon on FamilySearch put that right.
The 1845 birth is not a surprise — it is a vindication. This archive derived 1845 from the ages the marriage proclamations gave Rosario in 1898, 1902 and 1910, against a family tree that says 1850, and said so. The death act agrees.
And the name line stops being an inference
The archive reached Mariano Mazza and Maria Catalano the hard way: by reading "di Mariano" off marriage proclamations and assembling a generation nobody had claimed. It was careful work and it was still an inference.
Rosario's own death act names both of them outright. The deepest Sicilian generation in this archive is now a documented fact rather than a reconstruction.
And there is a son nobody had. The Acireale diocesan registers name Rosario Mazza and Leonarda Bonanno as the parents of a Marianum Mazza — a son called for his paternal grandfather, exactly as Sicilian custom predicts of a first son. He is not in the family tree.
The registers spell his father four different ways, which is the practical lesson in them:
The last is the one that matters. Santo Mazza is one of the two sons this archive found missing from the family tree — and here he is in a parish record, under a father's name that reads Gaspare. In these registers the given name is unreliable and the wife's name is the stable handle.
The register browsed, and the range pinned
The parish marriage register was then browsed by hand. The act is not found yet — but it is now cornered. Film 007490025 runs to 2,976 images, and reading pages gives the calibration:
That is about seven images to the year, so 1870 opens around image 724–726 and the marriage — which their eldest child dates to about 1870–72 — should lie in images 724 to 745. Twenty openings, and the next person to sit down with this does not have to start from 1777.
Notes for whoever continues. The
?i= parameter does not move the viewer — it reverts; the ark in the URL is
what identifies an image. The "Enter Image number" box does work, but it commits on click or
blur rather than on Enter, and the URL lags behind the viewer. And the fast way to scan is not
the Latin page at all — it is the AI-extracted image index below the viewer,
which tabulates Name, Father's Name and Mother's Name for every entry on the opening.
Why "Rosario" finds nothing in the parish register
The Piedimonte Etneo parish marriage register runs 1777–1911 and is in the full-text corpus — so Rosario and Leonarda's own marriage, about 1870, ought to be reachable. It is not, and the reason is worth recording.
These registers are in Latin. Salvatore's 1898 parish marriage reads Salvator Mazza, son of Rogerius Mazza and Leonarda Bonanno. Rosario is Rogerius. And even searching that form returns nothing, because the OCR of the hand is so poor that the page text is close to unusable — what actually works on these images is the AI-extracted household index, not the transcript.
Written before the act was found, and left standing. This section ended by saying the marriage was "very probably there" in the parish film and would have to be browsed. It was browsed — twenty openings of it — and it was not there. The film's own index holds no marriage for the pair at all. The act was in the civil register instead, and is set out at the top of this page. The reasoning was sound and the conclusion was wrong, which is the ordinary way of it; the record of the wrong turn is left here because the next person may take the same one.
A two-way conflict becomes a three-way one
The same parish record names Maria Nicotra 's mother as Venera Cosentino. The archive already held two readings: Monti Venera from the 1898 civil proclamation, and Venera Cassaneti from the Queensland death index. That is now three surnames for one woman, with only the given name Venera constant across all of them. Cassaneti and Cosentino may be the same word badly read twice. It stays unresolved, and it is worse than it was this morning.

What the name is
Mazza is the Italian for a club, a mace or a mallet, from the Latin mattea. It became a surname in every available way at once: as a nickname for a strong or a violent man, as a trade name for someone who swung a maul, and — most commonly — from the medieval personal name Mazzo, a short form of Giacomazzo, Tommazzo and the like.
It is among the most widespread surnames in Italy and it was coined independently, many times over, from Lombardy to Sicily. There is no founding Mazza family. That is not a disclaimer — it is the operative fact of this page, and it is why the six groups below are kept apart rather than drawn as one tree.
The line that reaches the children
Five generations and then it stops: Rosario Mazza — of whom one single fact is known, that he fathered Salvatore — then Salvatore Mazza born at Piedimonte Etneo in 1879, Sebastiano Mazza who sailed on the Toscana in 1949, and down to Mia and Rocco Francesco. It is the shallowest of the four quarters by five generations.

The 10 who still share the name and nothing else
The big one is gone: the hundred and ten Piedimonte Etneo Mazza who once sat here unattached are now part of group one, proved the descendants of Salvatore's brothers by five register acts. What is left are fragments — a handful of people entered with no parent, spouse or child, who cannot be placed either way.

Compare the Arena
Thirty-nine Arena in this tree form one single unbroken family, 1821 to 1937, all of Scilla. A hundred and twenty Mazza form six groups. That is not because the Arena were better recorded — it is because Arena arrived in this archive through one household that had been worked on, and Mazza arrived as a surname. The name a family is known by tells you least about it.
