Giarre

A town named by a document, contradicted by eleven of its own years, and then answered by its first. The largest comune in this archive.

21 September 2026 · «nato a Giarre»

Six words on a printed form

Piedimonte's Matrimoni allegati of 1872, fascicolo 20, holds the publication certificate for Giovanni Nicotra and Venera Cassaniti. The 1872 form prints «nato a ____» separately from «residente a ____», and the clerk filled both:

TRA GIOVANNI NICOTRA — nato a GIARRE — residente a MASCALI — di professione bracciante — di età anni trentuno

That sentence is why this comune is in the archive at all. It is also, so far, the only evidence that anybody in this family was ever here.

Eleven years read end to end, and he is in none of them

Giarre's annual Tavola is alphabetical and names both parents, so a Nicotra of a Rosario would identify itself without an act being opened.

YearThe N sectionWhat is around it
1820 two TWO NICOTRA GROOMS — THE FIRST IN ANY GIARRE MARRIAGE TAVOLA, AND GIARRE IS WHERE ROSARIO NICOTRA WAS BORN. Index entry 62 = ATTO 30, 1 May 1820: «NICOTRA SALVADORE / STRANO GIUSEPPA, patria Giarre, NICOTRA CIRINO / PELLINI MARIA — Strano Giuseppe / Vitale Rosa». Index entry 63 = ATTO 80, 31 July 1820: «NICOTRA GIUSEPPE / CATTABIANO ROSA, patria Giarre, NICOTRA MASTRO SEBASTIANO / TORNABENE CARMELA — Cattabiano Carmelo / Musumeci Maria». Neither groom is Rosario, who was born about 1800 and would have been twenty; these are two Nicotra HOUSEHOLDS of Giarre, headed by Cirino and by Mastro Sebastiano, contemporaries of Rosario's father Simone. Container LqJrKnB, images 200-203, read 11 October 2026. 97 acts and 97 index entries; the index is strictly alphabetical here and the N section is bounded by M (entries 57-61) before and O after. SAID PLAINLY: THE TAVOLA'S FIRST LEAF IS NOT IN THE SCAN. Images 197, 198 and 199 are acts, image 200 opens with the register's closing statement and its first index entry is 57 under M, so entries 1-56 — the letters A to L — were never photographed. That cannot hide an N in an index this strictly ordered, but the year is not «read whole» and is not recorded as though it were. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname. GIARRE MATRIMONI 1820 ATTO 30, read in the original 11 October 2026 (container LqJrKnB, image 61). «L'anno 1820 il dì VENTUNO del mese di APRILE ... avanti di Noi DOTTOR SEBASTIANO BARBAGALLO sindaco ed uffiziale dello Stato Civile del Comune di GIARRE ... sono comparsi SALVADORE NICOTRA, DI ANNI TRENTASEI COMPIUTI, NATO IN QUESTO COMUNE, di professione CONTADINO, domiciliato in detto, FIGLIO DI FU CIRINO, DI ANNI OTTANTA, di professione UN TEMPO CONTADINO, e di FU MARIA [surname written «Appellita» in the act and «Pellini» in the Tavola — the two readings do not agree and neither is forced], DI ANNI CINQUANTA; e GIUSEPPA STRANO, DI ANNI TRENTA COMPIUTI, nata in detto Comune, domiciliata NEL QUARTIERE DI S. LEONARDELLO, figlia di FU GIUSEPPE, di anni cinquanta, CONTADINO, e di ROSA VITALE, di anni sessanta, domiciliata ivi.» The church marriage followed on 22 April 1820; documents at foglio 271. SO: Salvadore was BORN ABOUT 1784 AT GIARRE, and his father CIRINO NICOTRA, CONTADINO, WAS BORN ABOUT 1740 AND WAS ALREADY DEAD by April 1820 — «fu», and his trade given as «un tempo contadino». Both parents dead. GIARRE MATRIMONI 1820 ATTO 80, read in the original 11 October 2026 (container LqJrKnB, image 163). The church marriage followed on 31 July 1820; documents at foglio 564. SO: Giuseppe was BORN ABOUT 1797 AT GIARRE, and his father MASTRO SEBASTIANO NICOTRA, A FALEGNAME AND NOT A LABOURER, WAS BORN ABOUT 1770 AND WAS STILL ALIVE in July 1820, as was his wife Carmela Tornabene. WHY THESE TWO ACTS MATTER. Rosario Nicotra was born about 1800 at Giarre and his father was SIMONE NICOTRA, husband of Marianna Musumeci — the deepest generation this archive has reached, and known only from Rosario's 1890 death act. Giuseppe Nicotra, born about 1797 at Giarre and a contadino, is Rosario's near-exact contemporary, and his father Sebastiano, born about 1770, stands in SIMONE'S OWN GENERATION. Cirino, born about 1740, stands one above it. These are the first Nicotra households of Giarre this archive has ever documented, and they sit exactly where Simone's own parents and brothers would sit. NOTHING IS ATTACHED. Giuseppe is not Rosario's brother — their parents are different couples. Whether Simone was a son of Cirino, or a brother of Sebastiano, or neither, is not established by these acts and no edge is drawn from them. The question is filed as q19.
1821 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. The whole Tavola read across images 95r-97: A, B, C, then G, L and M under no fresh heading, then P, R, S, T, V. 44 entries. Container 5VKXP9J, read 11 October 2026. THIS CLERK'S ORDER DEGRADES WITHIN SECTIONS — a Calì sits among the P entries and a Grasso among the C — so a junction negative would be worthless here and none was taken: all three index pages were read end to end. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1822 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOLOSI, NOT A NICOTRA. Index entry 16 = ATTO 32, 22 July 1822: «NICOLOSI CARMELO / CANNAVÒ ANTONIA, patria Giarre, NICOLOSI LORENZO / ZAPPALÀ CARMELA». Read at full resolution off the IIIF crop because Nicolosi and Nicotra are four letters apart in this hand and the distinction is the whole point of the sweep. The whole Tavola, images 55r-57: A, B, C, F, G, M, N, R, S, T, V. Container wrdrmWX, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1823 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK — a positive statement of absence, not a gap. THIS IS THE MOST RELIABLE INDEX IN THE DECADE: the clerk rules EVERY letter whether or not anything falls under it. A·B ruled blank, D·E ruled blank, N ruled blank, O ruled blank, Q ruled blank. Full sequence across images 77r-79: A·B, C, D·E, F, G, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T. 36 entries. Container 5VKXPmV, read 11 October 2026. A blank heading from this hand is worth more than a missing one from any other. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1824 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOLOSI, NOT A NICOTRA. Index entry 4 = ATTO 2: «NICOLOSI SEBASTIANO / TOMARCHIO LUCIA, patria Giarre, NICOLOSI VENERANDO / ANGELI ORAZIA — Tomarchio Giuseppe / Mandrisio Venera». CROSS-CHECK WORTH KEEPING: Nicolosi Venerando and Angeli Orazia are also the parents of the Nicolosi Salvadore who marries at MASCALI in 1827, atto 10. The two grooms are brothers, the two indexes were read three weeks and sixty miles apart, and the agreement settles that this hand's «Nicolosi» is Nicolosi. The whole Tavola, images 79r-81: A, B, C, F, G, M, N, P, R, S, T, V. The register's closing line says «atti numero trentotto» and thirty-eight acts are present. Container LydYKx1, read 11 October 2026.
1825 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK. The clerk writes «N. O.» on one line and «P.» on the next with nothing between them, and the P entries follow immediately — read at full resolution off the IIIF crop to be sure the space was empty rather than faint. The whole Tavola, images 77r-79: A, B, C, D·F, F, G, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, V. Container wbr2Ron, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1826 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK, as is O, with P following. Confirmed at full resolution. The whole Tavola, images 71r-73: A·B, B, C, E·F, G·I, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, V, Z. Container wrdrmey, read 11 October 2026. A SEPARATE FIND IN THE SAME TABLE, attached to nobody: index entry 22 is «MURABITO MASTRO ROSARIO / CAVALLARO ANGELA, patria Giarre, MURABITO MARIANO / VANDAZZO DONNA TOMASA». A Murabito household at Giarre matters because Rosario Nicotra was NATO IN GIARRE and his wife was VENERA MURABITO, who outlived him past 1893 and is in none of Mascali's twenty-one death indexes. This is a candidate home for her and nothing more: a shared surname in one town is not a link, and no edge is drawn from it.
1827 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK, with O likewise, both at the head of the second index page before P opens. The whole Tavola, images 67r-69: A, B, C, D·E·F, G, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, V, Z. The register's closing line says «atti numero trentadue» and thirty-two acts are present. Container Lme8RKK, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1828 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK. This clerk also rules D, E, I and Q blank, which is the same habit that makes 1823 so reliable: an empty heading here is written down rather than omitted. The whole Tavola, images 59r-61: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V. The register's closing line says «atti numero ventotto» and twenty-eight acts are present. Container LoYEKVR, read 11 October 2026.
1829 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK, with O likewise, confirmed at full resolution: entry 16 ends the M section, then N, then O, then P and its first entry. The whole Tavola, images 66r-68: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V. Container LeGQRZD, read 11 October 2026. THE LAST OF TEN. Across Giarre 1820-1829 there is exactly one year with Nicotra grooms and it is 1820.
1830 empty Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. N AND O RULED AND LEFT BLANK, then P opens at «Di Pietro Antonino» — filed under P, which is how these indexes treat a «Di» name. Container 0JbMnGQ, folio 88. THE MARRIAGE TAVOLA INDEXES BY THE GROOM'S SURNAME ONLY — each row stacks groom over bride and the letter follows the groom — so a NICOTRA BRIDE would not appear under N and this negative does not cover one. It covers ROSARIO NICOTRA, who is the groom this archive wants.
1831 empty Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. N AND O RULED AND BLANK, then P opens at Pennisi Michele. Container wWG7r9j, folio 62.
1832 empty Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. N AND O RULED AND BLANK, then P. Container wE7Ky8d, folio 28. The three headings are stacked together and had to be read at full width — at band width they look like one mark.
1833 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION AT ALL. The alphabet runs G, M, P, S, T, V — M straight into P with no N heading ruled. Container LDmbdyB, folio 54.
1834 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION AT ALL, and the whole Tavola was read to the last page to be sure, because Giarre has a habit of appending letter-sections after Z. It runs ...G, M, P, R, S, T, U, V, Z and there is no N anywhere in it. Container 5KMPz4P, folios 68 and 71.
1835 empty N heading written and left blank between 57 Morrano Venerando × Vegiti Agata under M and the P section — 6 Pentero Gregorio, 10 Puglisi Mro Angelo, 11 Patanè D. Francesco
1836 empty the clerk wrote «N. O.» TOGETHER ON ONE LINE after 35 Grasso Venera and left both blank, then P and 1 Pagano D. Grego. Two letters disposed of in one stroke
1837 none NO N SURNAME, established ENTRY BY ENTRY rather than from a heading. This clerk heads only some sections — M is headed on the page before, and the whole of the next page runs on unheaded. Every entry on it was read: Marrano, Di Marmo, Marano, Musumeci, Patanè, Panebianco, Pappalardo, Quattrocchi, Torrisi, Benevento, Pennisi, Puglisi. Nothing begins with N
1838 two THE N SECTION HOLDS A NICOTRA. atto 2, 9 January 1838: NICOTRA ALFIO, patria Giarre, son of NICOTRA SALVADORE and LA SPINA ROSA, × Cesaro Venera of Giarre. Also atto 21, Nicolosi Salvadore, which is not a Nicotra
1839 none the alphabet runs L, M, then P — Pulvirenti, Pennisi, Pagano under the heading, checked at full width because the capital could be read either way. No N section
1840 none the whole Tavola read, first heading to the blank leaf after V: A, B, D, C, F, L, M, P, S, T, V. M runs into P and the letter was checked at full width, because this clerk does not order his sections either
1841 empty N written and left blank, and O beneath it, between 49 Mauro Salvadore under M and the P section — Patanè, Grasso, Russo, Pappalardo. The alphabet here IS ordered: M, N, O, P, Q, R, S
1842 none M runs straight into O. The two headings after 7 Messina Giuseppe read O and P at full width, NOT N and O — read at band width they look like N. No N section at all
1843 one the one N entry is NICOLOSI Mro Angelo × Leotta Gaetana, atto 29, his patria CATANIA, parents Nicolosi Antonino and Musumeci Angela. Not a Nicotra. O beneath it is written and blank
1844 two atto 54, 19 August 1844: NICOTRA D.r D. ALFIO, patria GIARRE, son of Nicotra D. Giuseppe and CALTABIANO D. GIOACHINA, × Consoli D. Antonina — the same parents Riposto wrote for its Don Alfio in 1838, so ONE MAN MARRYING TWICE. Also atto 8, Noscia Mro Ignazio × Castorina Anna, not a Nicotra
1845 empty N RULED AND BLANK — the run goes I/L, M, then an empty N, an empty O, then P. NOTE ON THIS CLERK'S HAND: his capital P reads like a C, so «Parisi» and «Patane» look like «Carisi» and «Catanzaro»; caught by cropping the heading at native scale. Swept for a NICOTRA GROOM. These Tavole index by the GROOM'S SURNAME ONLY, so a bride of the name never appears under her own letter. The point of the sweep: a marriage act names BOTH sets of parents, so a son of SIMONE NICOTRA marrying here would be written «figlio di Simone Nicotra e Marianna Daidone». Container verified against its own manifest label as Giarre.
1846 one NICOLOSI Mro Venerando (Aci Reale) x Ciarella Venera, «Nicolosi Leonardo / Leotta Angela».
1847 one NICIFORA Antonino (Giarre) x Gianfi Angela Maria, «Nicifora Ignazio / ...».
1848 empty N AND O BOTH RULED BLANK; P carries the entries.
1849 one NEO Vincenzo x Torrisi Agata, «Neo Nicolo / Puzza Maria».
1850 two NERI Vincenzo (Mascali) x Pizzinnello Sebastiana; NUCIFORA Giovanni (Giarre) x Gangemi Marianna.
1851 none NO N SECTION BECAUSE THIS YEAR IS ORDERED BY THE GROOM'S FORENAME, not his surname — «Alfio Nucifora», «Domenico Calabrese», «Nunzio Torrisi». The letter headings are first-name initials, so the SURNAME COLUMN was read across every letter instead. ALL 64 MARRIAGES READ. No Nicotra surname anywhere.
1852 one NICOSIA Salvatore x Sorbello Isidora, «Nicosia fu Gaetano / Bottino Caterina» — verified by native-scale crop, Nicosia being one letter from Nicotra.
1853 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight into P.
1854 unread *** NO TAVOLA AND NO INDEX OF ANY KIND, so 1854 IS NOT SWEPT AND IS NOT A NEGATIVE. *** The volume closes on image 134 with the Sindaco's certification — «abbiamo chiuso e firmato il presente registro ... contenenti in numero SESSANTACINQUE atti di solenne promessa» — and image 135 is a blank printed form under the archive's «Blank Page(s)» card. Searching it means reading all 65 acts. GIARRE MORTI 1854 IS ALSO UNREAD, for an unrelated reason (its container interleaves two years' indexes), so 1854 is blind in both series.
1855 one NUCIFORA Salvadore x Leonardi Maria, «fu Giuseppe / ...».
1856 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight to O, then P.
1857 one NICOLO Mro Salvadore — AND THIS ONE WAS SETTLED BY THE ACT, NOT THE INDEX. In the Tavola the surname reads «Nico?a» at native resolution and could not be separated from NICOTRA by eye. ACT 67 (image 137), 8 November 1857, read in the original: «Mro SALVADORE NICOLO di anni TRENTUNO, nato in questo Comune ... FIGLIO DI FU GIACOMO ... e di ANGELA GRASSO», marrying VENERA FINOCCHIARO, 25, daughter of Mro Salvadore and Antonia Mazzaglia. «Grasso Angela» matches the Tavola's mother, so it is the same entry. THE SURNAME IS NICOLO. NOT NICOTRA.
1858 none NO N SECTION — M runs to an empty O, then P.
1859 one NUCIFORA Alfio (Giarre) x Leonardi Giuseppa, «Nucifora fu Giuseppe / Zappala Giuseppa». 1860 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight to O. 1820 four FOUR N ENTRIES AND TWO ARE NICOTRA. Index entries 178-181 on image 177: 178 Nobile Salvadore; **179 NICOTRA GIUSEPPA, parents NICOTRA SIMONE and DAIDONE MARIANNA, died 18 May 1820**; 180 Nicolosi Pietro; 181 NICOTRA MARIANO, parents NICOTRA SALVADORE and SPINA ROSA. ENTRY 179 IS THE SAME COUPLE AS GIARRE NATI 1820 ATTO 198, confirmed independently five weeks after they registered a daughter Rosaria: Simone Nicotra and Marianna Daidone buried a daughter Giuseppa. If Rosario Nicotra is their son, Giuseppa was his sister — NOT ATTACHED, because a couple's name is not a link to a man neither act mentions. SIMONE HIMSELF IS NOT HERE. Container wO4gDBZ, ~300 entries over images 174-180, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act. In these Giarre death Tavole the M and N sections are adjacent, so MUSUMECI is read in the same view as NICOTRA at no extra cost. THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS — said so the gap is known rather than assumed.
1821 two TWO N ENTRIES, ONE A NICOTRA, NOT SIMONE. Image 121: 157 Nucifora Venera; 14 NICOTRA GIACOMO, parents NICOTRA MARIANO and SPINA SANTA. A fourth Nicotra household of Giarre.
1825 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 72 Nivarra Vincenzo, «figlio dello stato», 1 July. Image 87. Many Musumeci in the adjacent M section, NO MARIANNA. 1826 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 40 Nipote Isidoro, «figlio dello stato», 19 April. Image 104, with O (90 Ovara Catarina) following and then P, so the heading placement is certain. Container LydYrXK, read 11 October 2026. Image 79: 94 NICOTRA CATARINA and 123 NICOTRA GIUSEPPA, both daughters of NICOTRA FRANCESCO and FRESTA ANNA, dying 8 ?bre and 30 November. A fifth Nicotra household of Giarre. 1829 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK on image 66. The placement proves itself: O follows immediately WITH entries (10 Oliva Giuseppe, 11 Ottavino Giuseppe, 30 Orlando Giovanni), so the blank line is the N section and not a mis-set heading. Container LeGQjaW, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act. 1830 two TWO N ENTRIES AND BOTH ARE NUCIFORA, NOT NICOTRA: 1 Nucifora Veneranda, parents Nucifora Mariano and Fasta Rosa, 5 January; 84 Nucifora Suor Angela, «detti», 8 July — so the two are sisters. Image 92. Container Lme8o2q, read 11 October 2026. 1831 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOTRA, NOT SIMONE: 149 NICOTRA ISIDORO, Giarre, CONTADINO, parents NICOTRA ALFIO and PAPPALARDO ROSA, died 29 November 1831. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop. A sixth Nicotra household of Giarre, and the trade column makes him an adult rather than a child. Image 91. Container 03PBjgW, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act. 1832 three THREE N ENTRIES AND NOT ONE IS A NICOTRA. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop because all three begin with the same hand's N: 10 NOBILE Giorgio of Messina, parents Nobile Sig. Lorenzo and Nicosia D. Anna; 16 NAZZARI Concetta, filandora, parents Mazzeo Domenico and Nazzari Domenica; 47 NICOSIA Gaetano, zerbino. Image 91. Container 5dZjbBx, read 11 October 2026. 1833 two TWO N ENTRIES AND NEITHER IS A NICOTRA: 101 Notamente Concetta, «figlia dello stato», 10 August; 174 Nucifora Isidoro, «figlio dello stato», 25 November. O follows with 158 Oliva Isidoro, so the placement is certain. Image 104. The adjacent M section holds a MURABITO VENERE of Altarello, daughter of Murabito Giuseppe and Pappalardo Sebastiana — noted only because Venera Murabito's origin is an open question, and this is NOT her: ours outlived Rosario past 1893. Container w1pJO9O, read 11 October 2026. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. M and N are adjacent in these Tavole so MUSUMECI is read in the same view; THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS.

1835 empty N AND O BOTH RULED AND LEFT BLANK, between the M section and P, on image 72. NO N ENTRY OF ANY SURNAME. Container LqJr889, read 11 October 2026. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. 1836 three THREE N ENTRIES AND ONE IS A NICOTRA, NOT SIMONE: 55 Nucifora Maria, filatrice, of Nucifora Paolo and Farella Catarina; 98 Nobile Isidora, projetto; and 113 NICOTRA FRANCESCA, CONTADINA, of NICOTRA ALFIO and PAPPALARDO ROSA, 28 September. THE SAME HOUSEHOLD AS 1831's Isidoro — Alfio and Rosa Pappalardo lose a second grown child in five years. Image 82. Container 0A4EXk9, read 11 October 2026. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. 1837 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 89 Neri Rosaria, projetto, «Genitori Incogniti», 16 July. O follows with 186 Orlà Sebastiano. Image 102. Container 0M9bz33, read 11 October 2026.
1838 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOSIA, NOT A NICOTRA: 54 NICOSIA ROSARIA, filandara, of NICOSIA GIUSEPPE and Messina Rosaria, 19 March. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop, because Nicosia and Nicotra differ by two letters in this hand and a negative taken from the page view would not have been safe. Image 104. Container 5KMP6xM, read 11 October 2026.
1839 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK on image 102. The placement proves itself: O follows immediately WITH an entry (20 Orazia Maria, projetto, 8 August), so the blank line is the N section. Container wjPl9qO, read 11 October 2026.
1840 two TWO N ENTRIES AND NEITHER IS A NICOTRA — both are foundlings: 107 Nistero Rosario and 135 Nostro Leonardo, each «projetto, Genitori Incogniti», 14 August and 14 October. O follows with 124 Oliva Anna, also a foundling. Image 92. Container w99klBr, read 11 October 2026.
1841 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 87 Nobile Isidoro, «Genitori Ignoti», 3 August 1841. THIS VOLUME GIVES EVERY LETTER ITS OWN PAGE, so the N page carries that single line and the rest of the sheet is ruled and empty — the cleanest negative shape in the whole sweep, because there is nowhere else on the page for an entry to hide. Image 102, facing the M section. Container wjPl9z8, read 11 October 2026. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. M and N are adjacent so MUSUMECI is read in the same view. THE D SECTION HAS SINCE BEEN READ TOO, in a second pass over all thirty-nine readable years, and there is no DAIDONE in any Giarre death Tavola from 1820 to 1860.
1842 three THREE N ENTRIES AND ONE IS A NICOTRA — AND IT NAMES HIS PARENTS. Image 111, read at full resolution off an IIIF crop: 177 Neri Ignazio, projetto; **189 NICOTRA ALFIO, BRACCIALE, figlio di NICOTRA GIUSEPPE e PENNISI LEONARDA, died 16 DECEMBER 1842 — the act was read in the original on 11 October 2026 and is dated «il dì diciotto del mese di Dicembre», the death «nel giorno sedici del mese di sopra»; an earlier version of this row said 16 February, which fits neither the act nor act 189 of a year with 218 of them**; 201 Nicosia Sebastiano, «Genitori Ignoti». THIS IS ALMOST CERTAINLY THE ALFIO WHO BURIED TWO GROWN CHILDREN — Isidoro in 1831 and Francesca in 1836, both «di Nicotra Alfio e Pappalardo Rosa» — now dead himself, with his OWN parents written down. That gives a three-generation Giarre chain in the one surname: GIUSEPPE NICOTRA x LEONARDA PENNISI, then ALFIO x ROSA PAPPALARDO, then Isidoro and Francesca. NONE OF IT IS ATTACHED TO ANYONE; it is recorded because it is exactly what this sweep is for. A DEATH ACT NAMES THE PARENTS — which is the whole reason Giarre Morti is the right book to look for Simone in, and this year proves the instrument works. Container LapdzeR. THE ACT ITSELF, READ IN FULL: «ALFIO NICOTRA D'ANNI SETTANTA, SPOSO DI ROSA PAPPALARDO, nato in Giarre, di professione BRACCIALE, FIGLIO DI FU GIUSEPPE e di FU LEONARDA PENNISI». So the identification this row made from the Tavola IS CONFIRMED BY THE ACT, and he was born about 1772 — Simone Nicotra's own generation. He is NOT the Alfio Nicotra who died at Mascali in 1869, who was born about 1796 and whose mother was a CATERINA.
1843 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 76 Natale Sebastiano, Projetto, «Genitori Ignoti», 5 May. O follows with 165 Ornato Giovanni, also a foundling, and the rest of the sheet is ruled and empty. Image 106. Container 04aZQqZ, read 11 October 2026.
1844 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 99 Nano Giuseppe, Projetto, «Ignoti», 4 August 1844. The N heading carries that single line, O below it is RULED AND BLANK, and P follows — a clean three-heading sequence. Image 107. Container w68Zx86, read 11 October 2026.
1845 two TWO N ENTRIES AND NEITHER IS A NICOTRA — both foundlings: 78 Napoli Filomena and 99 Nicomino Salvadore, each «Genitori Ignoti», July. Image 112, immediately after the M section. Container LDmbAPl, read 11 October 2026.
1846 three THREE N ENTRIES AND NOT ONE IS A NICOTRA: 2 Di Natale Giuseppe, 89 Nuda Giuseppa and 120 Nazzarino Giuseppe, all «Genitori Ignoti». The headings on this page are PRINTED IN BOLD CAPITALS — N, then O with two entries, then P — so the section boundaries are unmistakable. Image 99. Container LoYEJrV, read 11 October 2026. NOTE ON THIS VOLUME: images 97 and 98 are the SAME OPENING photographed twice, which is the duplicate-shot pairing these scans use; the second is not a further page and no content sits between them.
1847 two TWO N ENTRIES AND ONE IS A NICOTRA — AND IT CLOSES A LOOP THIS ARCHIVE ALREADY HAD OPEN. Image 118, read at full resolution off an IIIF crop: **146 NICOTRA SALVATORE, figlio di NICOTRA D.r D. ALFIO e CONSOL D. ANTONINA, died 3 August 1847**; and 151 Nolupo Angelo, Projetto. THE DON ALFIO HOUSEHOLD IS ALREADY ON THE GIARRE PAGE: his marriage is Matrimoni 1844 atto 54, and the birth sweep recorded a NICOTRA SALVADORE to «Nicotra D.r D. Alfio / Consoli D.na Antonina» on 5 November 1846 AND A SECOND SALVATORE to the same couple on 2 January 1848, which the archive could only note as «the same Don Alfio household again». THIS IS WHY. The first child died at about nine months and they gave his name to the next. Three registers — marriage, birth, death — and the death act is what makes the other two make sense. This is the TITLED line, not Rosario's bracciante one. Container LapdWMA.
1848 empty THE N HEADING IS RULED AND LEFT BLANK on image 79, directly after a long M section, with O below it carrying an entry (120 Oliva Sebastiano, of Oliva Sebastiano and Carisi Angela, 25 October) — so the placement proves itself and the blank is a statement of absence. Container w68Zxrb, read 11 October 2026.
1849 two TWO N ENTRIES AND NEITHER IS A NICOTRA — both foundlings: 92 Negro Luciano and 145 Nicandro Leonardo, each «Genitori Ignoti», 10 August 1849. The section runs N straight to P with no O ruled. Image 83. Container 0noNWxv, read 11 October 2026.
1850 unread NOT READ, AND AN EARLIER VERSION OF THIS ROW SAID IT WAS. The Giarre deposit (segnatura 16098, container w99kPgr, manifest label «Giarre > 1850») IS SCANNED SHORT: its last image is act 167 while its own closing line says «numero centosettantasei», and IT CARRIES NO TAVOLA AT ALL. This row then claimed the Tavola was recovered from «the duplicate deposit», segnatura 16480, ark an_ua19993218, container 57Vre6X — and called it the first time the two-deposit rule had paid. IT IS NOT A DUPLICATE. ITS MANIFEST LABEL READS «MACCHIA > 1850». Macchia is a separate comune, later absorbed into Giarre, and the Tavola read there — the one whose PATRIA column gives Milo, Macchia and Dagala, which are MACCHIA'S OWN HAMLETS and should have been the tell — IS MACCHIA'S DEAD, NOT GIARRE'S. The Nicolosi Sebastiano recorded here was a Macchia death. THERE IS NO SECOND GIARRE DEPOSIT FOR 1850 and the year is outstanding.
1851 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOLOSI, NOT A NICOTRA: 175 NICOLOSI ANGELO, of Nicolosi Angelo and Leotta Sebastiana, 24 November. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop, because Nicolosi and Nicotra are close in this hand and the father repeats the surname, which settles it. Image 106. Container LzEPlNg, read 11 October 2026.
1852 three THREE N ENTRIES AND NOT ONE IS A NICOTRA: 86 Nero Carmelo «Dello Stato»; 134 Napoli Maria «Dello Stato»; 159 Nucifora Carmelo, BRACCIALE, of Nucifora fu Michele and Scrivano fu Rosa. O follows with 81 Oliva Isidora, then P. Image 117. Container wbr2Wyd, read 11 October 2026.
1853 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 13 Nazzari Rosaria, «Genitori Ignoti», 18 January. O follows with three entries and then P, Q ruled blank, R — the whole tail is legible and in order. Image 107. Container 5dZjWPx, read 11 October 2026.
1854 unread THE N SECTION IS NOT UNREAD — IT IS NOT IN THE VOLUME. Re-opened from the START of its Tavola on 11 October 2026 and the structure is now fully mapped. Container Lme8WWa, 127 images. The 1854 Tavola runs B and C on image 120 (the C section carrying the clerk's own note «SEGUE ALL'ULTIMA PAGINA», and image 127, the last page, duly holds the C overflow), D, E and F on 121, G, I, L and the start of M on 122, and M completing on 123's LEFT page at entry 224. AND THERE IT STOPS. IMAGE 123'S RIGHT PAGE BEGINS A DIFFERENT YEAR: a lone N entry dated 2 GENNARO 1856, and images 124 to 126 carry P, Q, R and the rest, EVERY ENTRY DATED 1856. The binder put 1856's N-to-Z run where 1854's belongs. SO 1854 HAS NO N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V OR Z AT ALL, and no amount of re-reading will produce them — the only route to 1854's N is the acts themselves, of which there are at least 229 by the M section's own numbering. AN EARLIER VERSION OF THIS ROW SENT THE NEXT READER TO «the 1854 duplicate deposit». THERE IS NO GIARRE DUPLICATE. The row that looked like one, segnatura 16485 / ark an_ua19993223, is MACCHIA 1854 — one of the 321 Macchia registers that sat inside data/giarre-arks.tsv until they were split out on 11 October 2026. Following that advice would have read another comune's dead. WHAT WAS GAINED: THE D SECTION, WHICH NOBODY HAD REACHED, IS NOW READ — D'AGATA Tommaso(66), D'MAURO Filippo(75), DEL PIZZO Rosario(91), with E ruled blank beneath it. NO DAIDONE IN 1854. AND THE STRAY MAN IS PLACED: «NICOTRA SEBASTIANO, ACI REALE, BRACCIALE» is ATTO 2 OF 1856, not an 1854 death at all, which is why Giarre's 1854 acts were never going to hold him.
1855 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 160 Nucifora Carmelo, of Nucifora Salvadore and Dorto Isidora, 9 October. The M section runs to 180 immediately above it and P opens immediately below, so the section is bounded on both sides. Image 159. Container 5VKXVaE, read 11 October 2026. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. M and N are adjacent so MUSUMECI is read in the same view. THE SURNAMES ARE THE POINT: «Nuovogrande» and «Nascosto» are invented names the register gave children it could not name, and a whole N section of them is what this year's alphabet amounts to. 1820 two the FIRST year Sicily registered at all, and the N section holds two plainly-written NICOTRA households: atto 198 Nicotra Rosaria, of NICOTRA SIMONE and Marianna Dadone, 13 April · atto 228 Nicotra Carmela, of NICOTRA ROSARIO and Rosa Providenza, 1 May. No Don, no Donna. Also in the section: Nicolosi Pietro, Nota Alessandro, Nucifora Alfio ATTO 198 READ IN THE ORIGINAL, 11 October 2026 (container 03PBQXV, canvas 201): «L'anno 1820 il dì QUINDICI del mese di APRILE alle ore quattro antimeridiane avanti di Noi D.r Sebastiano Barbagallo Sindaco ... del Comune di GIARRE ... è comparso SIMONE NICOTRA, DI ANNI QUARANTAQUATTRO, di professione CONTADINO, domiciliato NEL QUARTIERE S. ALFIO DI QUESTO COMUNE, quale ci ha presentato una FEMMINA ... nata da MARIANNA DAIDONE sua legittima moglie, DI ANNI QUARANTA, domiciliata con esso ... nel giorno TREDICI del mese di sopra alle ore sette pomeridiane»; the child was named ROSARIA and baptised 24 April; documents at foglio 263. SO THIS SIMONE NICOTRA WAS BORN ABOUT 1776 AND HIS WIFE ABOUT 1780. WHY IT MATTERS AND WHY IT IS NOT YET AN ANSWER: Rosario Nicotra, born about 1800 at Giarre, was the son of SIMONE and MARIANNA MUSUMECI by his own 1890 death act. This Simone is a contadino at Giarre, the right age to have fathered Rosario at twenty-four, and his wife's FORENAME MATCHES EXACTLY. HER SURNAME DOES NOT. «Daidone» is plainly written here and «Musumeci» is plainly written in 1890; both were re-read as full-resolution crops and neither reading is strained. He is the best candidate this archive has ever had for Rosario's father AND HE IS NOT ATTACHED TO HIM. The conflict is filed as question 19, which also names what would settle it: Simone's own death act in Giarre Morti.
1821 two TWO NICOTRA HOUSEHOLDS. atto 58 Nicotra Catarina, 12 February — NICOTRA SALVADORE and COSTA ANNA. atto 191 Nicotra Giuseppe, May — NICOTRA ROSARIO and PREVITERA PAOLA. Also 41 Nucifora Alfio and 162 Nucifora Salvadore, which are a different surname
1822 empty the clerk wrote «N O» TOGETHER ON ONE LINE and left both blank, then P — Patanè Giuseppa, Patti Salvadore, Patanè Angela. The same two-letters-one-stroke habit as the 1836 marriages
1823 empty N and O written and left blank after the M section — the last M entries are Maugeri Francesco, Musumeci Antonino, Marius Vasi Raffaele — then P with Di Dio Giuseppe and Pappalardo Alfio. NOTE: this volume HAS AN APPENDIX, «Segue alla lettera B», which is Giarre's known habit
1824 empty N written at the FOOT of the M page with nothing under it, after 285 Musumeci Vito; the facing page opens at P with 1 Pennisi Cleonia
1825 empty N, O and P written as three stacked headings after Musumeci Raffaele; N and O left blank, P holds Pafumi Mariano and Patanè Rosario. The volume ENDS AT Z — 52 Zappalà Isidoro — with a blank ruled leaf facing: NO APPENDIX
1826 empty the same three stacked headings N, O, P after 199 Mangano Filippa; N and O blank, P holds 12 Pennisi Sebastiano. The volume ENDS AT Z — Zappalà Sebastiana and Giuseppa — under a flourished «Fine»: NO APPENDIX
1827 empty N HEADING WRITTEN AND LEFT BLANK, and O blank beneath it, then P opens at Pafumi Mariano act 34 — read whole from the I section to Z on 9 October 2026, not by junction. Folio 170 of container 5xe4lba, the Tavola running I, L, M, N, O, P. NO NICOTRA. But the M section holds the FIRST MURABITO HOUSEHOLD this archive has found anywhere: act 98, MURABITO VENERA, daughter of MURABITO GIUSEPPE and COPPOLINO AGOSTINA. Venera Murabito is the name of Rosario Nicotra's wife, and this one is not her — a girl born in 1827 would have been fourteen when Giovanni was born about 1841 — but the household is real, it is at GIARRE, and it uses the forename Venera.
1828 empty N HEADING WRITTEN AND LEFT BLANK, O blank beneath it, then P opens at Pennisi Sebastiano act 12 — read whole on 9 October 2026, folio 230 of container wRGJ3ja. NO NICOTRA, and THREE MURABITO HOUSEHOLDS in the one year: act 158 MURABITO SERAFINA of Murabito Giuseppe and Coppolino Agostina — the same couple as Venera in 1827, thirteen months apart; act 83 MURABITO ANGELA of Murabito Vito and Longi Francesca; act 91 MURABITO ANGELA of Murabito Francesco and Bertagallo Serafina. Two girls called Angela in one year, to different parents, which is why they are three households and not one. MURABITO IS A COMMON GIARRE SURNAME — that is the finding. «Venera Murabito» being of Giarre is ordinary rather than remarkable, and the pool to search is large.

1832 none Read 9 October 2026 from a container banked the same day, when the throttle lifted. NO N SECTION AT ALL — the alphabet runs M straight into P, with no N heading ruled and no O either, which is a different and stronger fact than a heading left blank. Container 5GE26Nx, folio 184. BUT THE M SECTION HOLDS THE MURABITO HOUSEHOLD AGAIN: act 155, MURABITO SALVADORE, son of MURABITO GIUSEPPE and COPPOLINO AGOSTINA — the same couple as Venera in 1827 and Serafina in 1828. Three children across six years, so the household is settled at Giarre and not passing through.
1833 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION AT ALL — M runs straight into P, as in 1832. Container 5vxY4Kl, folio 175. No Nicotra and no Murabito.
1834 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION — M into P again, and the alphabet of this volume is not in order either: it runs P, Q, V, S, which is the Mascali habit turning up at Giarre and a reason no junction negative should ever be trusted here. Container Lapd1WA, folio 212. THE M SECTION HOLDS A SECOND MURABITO GIUSEPPE: act 100, MURABITO ROSARIO, son of MURABITO GIUSEPPE and PATANÈ VENERA — a different wife from the Coppolino Agostina household, so either two men of the name or a remarriage. A Murabito household at Giarre whose wife is a Venera and whose son is a Rosario. Those are the two forenames this archive is hunting, in the wrong surname, and it is recorded as a coincidence and not a join.
1835 empty Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. N RULED AND LEFT BLANK, then P. Container 5dZj6aK, folio 185. TWO MORE MURABITO HOUSEHOLDS: act 134 MURABITO ROSARIO of MURABITO FRANCESCO and BARBAGALLO SERAFINA — the same couple as Angela in 1828, spelled Bertagallo there — and act 45 MURABITO SALVADORE of MURABITO ALFIO and Sorbello Rosaria. An ALFIO Murabito, which is the forename the archive has been following in the Nicotra of Giarre and Riposto.
1836 one Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT NICOTRA: act 176, NICCIÒ MARIA of Nicciò Santo and Giardino Giachino, 11 November. An O section follows it (Olivo Mariano) and then P. Container LqJro1B, folio 215. A THIRD MURABITO GIUSEPPE: act 203, MURABITO VENERA of MURABITO GIUSEPPE and PAPPALARDO SEBASTIANA — a third different wife, and a second daughter called Venera in the Giarre Murabito.
1837 empty Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. N AND O RULED AND BLANK, then P on the following page. Container wbr2VZX, folio 182. Act 146 is MURABITO ANGELO of MURABITO FRANCESCO and BARBAGALLO SERAFINA — that household's third child after Angela in 1828 and Rosario in 1835.
1838 none the alphabet runs M straight into P
1839 empty the N heading written and left blank, then O — Oliva Alfio — then P
1840 none M runs straight into P
1841 none M runs into O; appendices F and B, neither an N
1842 none appendices T, P, B and F, none of them an N
1843 empty the N heading written and left blank, and the O beneath it too
1844 empty the N heading written and left blank; one appended G on the last image
1845 none M runs into P; appendices F and T
1846 one NICOTRA SALVADORE — Nicotra D.r D. Alfio / Consoli D.na Antonina, 5 November
1847 one Nicolosi Giuseppe — Nicolosi Angelo / Leotta Gaetana, 31 January
1848 one NICOTRA SALVATORE — the same Don Alfio household again, 2 January

The only Nicotra household at Giarre in eleven years is a titled one. Dottor Don Alfio Nicotra and Donna Antonina Consoli name a Salvatore in November 1846 and a Salvatore again in January 1848 — which is what a family does when the first child dies. Giovanni's father was a bracciante. Different household, different condition.

There were untitled Nicotra at Giarre after all

The eleven years above are still eleven years, and they still do not hold Giovanni. But the sentence they seemed to support — that Giarre's Nicotra were all gentry — was never what they said. It was what eleven years of one register could not see.

Riposto's marriage Tavola for 1844, atto 39, marries Nicotra Salvadore to Maria Barbagallo. The patria column gives his as GIARRE. His parents are written plainly, with no Don and no Donna: Alfio Nicotra and Rosa Pappalardo. He then registers two children at Riposto, in 1845 and 1847.

That is an ordinary Giarre Nicotra family, documented — and invisible in Giarre's own birth indexes. Salvadore married in 1844, so he was born about 1815 to 1824, which is before the earliest year this archive had read here. It does not find Giovanni. It does something better for the argument: it shows that a Nicotra can be nato a Giarre, be entirely absent from the Giarre years that have been read, and turn up in Riposto's registers instead — which is exactly what Giovanni's certificate and Giarre's silence together require of him.

22 September 2026 · Giarre, Nati 1820, the first year of all

The decade was wrong, not the town

Salvadore Nicotra's marriage pointed at a birth around 1815–1824, so the first Giarre volume was opened: 1820, the year civil registration began in Sicily at all — there is nothing before it anywhere south of the strait. Its N section was read whole.

It holds two Nicotra households, and neither carries a title.

atto 198
Nicotra Rosaria — of Nicotra Simone and Marianna Dadone
13 April 1820
atto 228
Nicotra Carmela — of Nicotra Rosario and Rosa Providenza
1 May 1820
Giarre, Nati 1820 — the N section, with two Nicotra households
Giarre, Stato civile della restaurazione, Nati 1820, the annual Tavola at the N section — Archivio di Stato di Catania (Antenati an_ua68978, image 553). 198 · Nicotra Rosaria — Nicotra Simone / Dadone Marianna, 13 April. 228 · Nicotra Carmela — Nicotra Rosario / Providenza Rosa, 1 May. Below them Nucifora, Nicolosi and Nota, and then O. No Don and no Donna on the page.

So the sentence this page carried for a day — that Giarre's Nicotra are gentry — was never a fact about Giarre. It was a fact about eleven years of it. Eighteen years earlier the surname is here twice over in one volume, written plainly, the way a labourer's name is written.

And the second father is called Rosario, which is the name this archive has been hunting for a week. It is not him. Giovanni's father was a working bracciante in October 1872; a man fathering a child in May 1820 would be well past seventy-five by then. What a Rosario Nicotra of Giarre in 1820 is is the generation a grandson would be named after — and naming custom is evidence, but weak evidence, and this archive has been burned by treating it as more. The name is recorded, the join is not made, and the way to test it is Salvadore Nicotra's own birth act, which would say whether Alfio, Simone and Rosario are brothers.

a caution this comune taught

The alphabet starts again after Z

The 1848 index says so itself, in the clerk's own hand, in the Osservazioni column beside the Nicotra entry: «in fine dell'alfabeto riportata altra volta la lettera M» — at the end of the alphabet the letter M is entered a second time.

Giarre's Tavole append extra letter-sections after Z for acts registered late. Nine of the eleven years do it; 1846 and 1847 do not, and end at Z with a blank leaf. So a volume with no appendix looks exactly like a volume whose appendix you have not reached, and «the alphabet finished» is not the same as «the index finished». Every one of the eleven years above has had its tail read as well as its main run. The instruments →

This page used to say Giarre holds two copies of every year. It does not, and the mistake cost a reading. Each register did appear to come twice under different segnature, and that looked like a duplicate deposit — a resource this archive had nowhere else. The second copy was a different town. Of the 808 rows once banked here, 321 are MACCHIA, a neighbouring comune later absorbed into Giarre, and they are now kept separately; Giarre holds 37 Nati, 29 Morti and 28 Matrimoni volumes in its own right. The tell was there to be read: the Macchia volumes' Patria column names Milo, Macchia and Dagala, which are Macchia's hamlets and not Giarre's. The discriminator is the ark — every an_ua1999* is Macchia — checked against eight manifest labels spread across 1821 to 1871, and the two groups share no segnatura between them.

What it cost. Giarre's own Morti 1850 is scanned short and carries no index. A sweep took the index from what it believed was the duplicate and banked the year as read — «the first time the two-deposit rule has actually paid here». It had not paid; it had read Macchia's dead. That year is now marked unread, the names taken from it belong to Macchia, and Giarre Morti stands at 39 of 41 years, not 40. Unlike Mascali Giarre does have 1844.

Three readings, and none of them proved

Giovanni Nicotra's certificate says Giarre. Giarre's registers, read for eleven consecutive years in both the main run and the appendix, do not hold him. Something has to give, and this archive does not yet know what.

  • His ages are wrong again. He is trentuno in October 1872 and ventotto in December 1875 — already six years apart in three. The windows either side of the read decade are 1833–37 and 1849–53, and neither has been touched.
  • He was registered at Riposto, the lower town, which has registered separately since 1821. This reading now has a case of its own behind it: Nicotra Salvadore, patria Giarre, married at Riposto in 1844 and registered his children there. It is still not Giovanni, and one man's habit is not a rule — but it is no longer an inference from general history alone.
  • «Giarre» is loose for a frazione — Macchia, Trepunti, Altarello, San Giovanni Montebello. This one now has a documented precedent, below.

Nothing above is a finding. It is what is left when a document and a register disagree and both have been read. The Nicotra line → · The open questions →

23 September 2026 · Giarre, Matrimoni 1838, atto 2

An untitled Nicotra marrying at Giarre, and a grandfather behind him

Seven of Giarre's ten banked marriage years are now read whole. Rosario Nicotra is in none of them. What 1838 holds instead is the plainest Nicotra household this archive has found here:

atto 2
Nicotra Alfio — of Nicotra Salvadore and La Spina Rosa
9 January 1838
married
Cesaro Venera, of Giarre
no Don, no Donna

Set that beside Riposto's marriage of 1844 — Nicotra Salvadore, patria Giarre, son of Nicotra Alfio and Rosa Pappalardo — and the two acts give an alternating Alfio and Salvadore running three generations deep at Giarre, which is precisely what Sicilian naming custom produces when the first son takes his paternal grandfather's name.

They are not joined here. Both mothers are a Rosa and neither surname matches the other, and naming custom is evidence, but weak evidence — the rule this archive adopted after four undated Rosario Mazza were once fused on a name alone. What the two acts do settle, together with its first year, 1820, is that ordinary labouring Nicotra were at Giarre continuously from at least 1820 to 1844, in a town whose eleven read birth years show none of them.

And his own birth act is not here either. Giarre's births are now read for eighteen years: 1820 to 1826 end to end, and 1838 to 1848. Salvadore married in 1844, so a Giarre birth puts him about 1815–1824 — and 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825 and 1826 have the N heading written and left blank, three of them stacking N, O, P in one column and disposing of two letters at a stroke. Only 1820 and 1821 hold Nicotra at all, four households between them, and none of their children is a Salvadore.

Which leaves two readings and no third. Either he was born before 1820 — and Sicilian civil registration begins in 1820, so there is no act to find and only the parish books could hold him — or he said Giarre and was registered somewhere else. Two Nicotra men now say «patria Giarre» and neither is in Giarre's registers. Salvadore from 1844, Giovanni from 1872. Two is not a coincidence.

1842 nearly became a false negative. At band width its alphabet appears to run M, N, O. At full width the two headings are O and P — the year has no N section at all, which is a different and stronger fact. 1854 are still unread, containers banked.

11 October 2026 · Giarre, Morti — looking for Simone

A man born about 1776, and the death act that would name his parents

Giarre Nati 1820, atto 198 puts a Simone Nicotra, di anni quarantaquattro, contadino, in the quartiere S. Alfio, declaring a daughter by Marianna Daidone. Rosario Nicotra was born about 1800 at Giarre and his own death act of 1890 names his parents as fu Simone and fu Musumeci Marianna. The forename matches exactly and the surname does not, and neither reading is strained.

A death act names the deceased's parents and the spouse — both halves of that question at once. Simone was forty-four in April 1820, so he died somewhere between then and about 1860. Giarre's death registers begin in 1820. All forty-one years to 1860 are banked; 39 of them are read.

So far: 33 of those years hold an N entry of any surname and 6 have the heading ruled and left blank. Simone is not among them. What the sweep has found instead is how many Nicotra households Giarre held at once — 9 of them, each a couple the index itself names:

  • Nicotra Simone × Daidone Marianna — 1820, atto 179 — and the same couple in Nati 1820 atto 198
  • Nicotra Salvadore × Spina Rosa — 1820, atto 181
  • Nicotra Mariano × Spina Santa — 1821, atto 14
  • Nicotra Francesco × Fresta Anna — 1827, atti 94 and 123 — two daughters in one year
  • Nicotra Alfio × Pappalardo Rosa — 1831, atto 149 and 1836, atto 113 — Isidoro and Francesca, both grown
  • Nicotra Giuseppe × Pennisi Leonarda — 1842, atto 189 — Alfio's own parents, named by his death act
  • Nicotra Dottor Don Alfio × Consoli Donna Antonina — 1847, atto 146 — the titled line
  • Nicotra Don Ferdinando × Rubbiero Concetta — 1856, atto 34 — titled also
  • Nicotra Giuseppe × Coco Carmela — 1859, atto 4 — not the Giuseppe of Matrimoni 1820, who married a Cattabiano

That list is the reason none of them is attached to anybody. 9 Nicotra fathers in one small town, across three generations, is exactly the situation in which a shared surname proves nothing. Simone and Marianna Daidone appear twice — registering a daughter in April 1820 and burying another in May — which makes them a real household and still not Rosario's.

All three surnames were read, and that took two passes. In these Tavole the M and N sections are adjacent, so Musumeci came free with Nicotra and no Marianna Musumeci appeared. The D section, for Daidone, sits pages earlier and the first pass skipped it in all forty years — an Italian death index files a married woman under her maiden name, so she could have been sitting under D in a year already counted as read. That gap was written down rather than assumed, and then it was closed: every D section from 1820 to 1860 has now been read, and there is no Daidone in any of them. What is there instead is D'Urso, D'Angelo, D'Agata, Di Bella, Di Stefano and a great many foundlings — 1823, 1825, 1827, 1828, 1830, 1832, 1841 and 1847 rule D blank altogether, and 1841 gives the letter a whole empty page of its own.

So the plain result. Neither Simone Nicotra nor his wife Marianna — looked for under Nicotra, under Daidone and under Musumeci — died at Giarre between 1820 and 1860. He was forty-four in 1820 and would have been eighty-four at the end of it. They died after 1860, or they died somewhere else. Rosario was at Mascali by 1841, which is where his son was born, so Mascali's own death registers before 1873 are the place to look next; this archive has read them only from 1873.

YearN sectionWhat is in it
1820 four FOUR N ENTRIES AND TWO ARE NICOTRA.
Container 0A4EDGW, read 11 October 2026. 1822 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 46 Nifosi Filippo, «figlio dello stato», 30 May. Image 96. This year's Tavola carries a PROFESSIONE column. Container 0ZJGEko, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act. THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS — said so the gap is known rather than assumed.
1823 empty N AND O RULED TOGETHER AND LEFT BLANK, between the M section and P, on image 78. NO N ENTRY OF ANY SURNAME. The M section read in the same view holds Musumeci Venera, Antonino, Catarina, Francesco and Giuseppe — NO MARIANNA. Container LeGQjnx, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act. 1824 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 153 Nocella Isidoro, «figlio dello stato». Image 101. The M section in the same view includes MURABITO ROSARIA — noted because Venera Murabito's origin is an open question — and no Musumeci Marianna. Container 0noNEMg, read 11 October 2026.
1825 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 72 Nivarra Vincenzo, «figlio dello stato», 1 July. Image 87. Many Musumeci in the adjacent M section, NO MARIANNA. Container 5YGZDKy, read 11 October 2026. SWEPT FOR SIMONE NICOTRA, born about 1776 by his daughter's birth act (Giarre Nati 1820 atto 198), and for his wife MARIANNA — written DAIDONE there and MUSUMECI in Rosario's 1890 death act.
1827 two TWO N ENTRIES AND BOTH ARE NICOTRA, NEITHER IS SIMONE. Image 79: 94 NICOTRA CATARINA and 123 NICOTRA GIUSEPPA, both daughters of NICOTRA FRANCESCO and FRESTA ANNA, dying 8 ?bre and 30 November. A fifth Nicotra household of Giarre. O follows ruled and blank, then P. Container wE7Kq4d, read 11 October 2026.
1828 empty N AND O RULED TOGETHER AND LEFT BLANK on image 77, between the M section and P. NO N ENTRY OF ANY SURNAME. Container LydYr4D, read 11 October 2026.
THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS — said so the gap is known rather than assumed.
1834 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 103 Nucifora Salvadore, projetto, «Genitori Incogniti», 14 August. Image 87. Container 5dZjbNn, read 11 October 2026.
M and N are adjacent in these Tavole so MUSUMECI is read in the same view; THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS.
M and N are adjacent in these Tavole so MUSUMECI is read in the same view; THE D SECTION, FOR DAIDONE, SITS PAGES EARLIER AND WAS NOT READ IN THIS PASS.
1837 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS NOT A NICOTRA: 89 Neri Rosaria, projetto, «Genitori Incogniti», 16 July. O follows with 186 Orlà Sebastiano. Image 102. Container 0M9bz33, read 11 October 2026.
Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. THE D SECTION HAS SINCE BEEN READ TOO, in a second pass over all thirty-nine readable years, and there is no DAIDONE in any Giarre death Tavola from 1820 to 1860.
THE D SECTION HAS SINCE BEEN READ TOO, in a second pass over all thirty-nine readable years, and there is no DAIDONE in any Giarre death Tavola from 1820 to 1860.
1856 two TWO N ENTRIES AND ONE IS A NICOTRA, NOT SIMONE: **34 NICOTRA VITO, figlio di D. FERDINANDO e CONCETTA RUBBIERO, died 6 May 1856**; and 100 Nucifora Giuseppe, of Nucifora Salvadore and di Maria, 28 July. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop. THE «D.» IS DON, so this is the TITLED Giarre Nicotra line — the same stratum as the Dottor Don Alfio of 1844-1848 — and not the bracciante line Rosario belonged to. Image 121. Container wlGlmDM, read 11 October 2026.
1857 five FIVE N ENTRIES AND EVERY ONE IS A FOUNDLING, NONE A NICOTRA: 91 Nuovogrande Margherita, 96 Nascosto Vito, 148 Nuovogrande Alessandro, 173 Nascosto Giuseppe, 219 Nobile Camillo — each «Genitori ignoti». THE SURNAMES ARE THE POINT: «Nuovogrande» and «Nascosto» are invented names the register gave children it could not name, and a whole N section of them is what this year's alphabet amounts to. O is ruled and left blank beside them, then P. Image 122. Container wWG7O3n, read 11 October 2026. 1858 three THREE N ENTRIES AND NOT ONE IS A NICOTRA: 65 Nicolosi D. Mariano of LINGUAGLOSSA, civile, of Nicolosi Giuseppe and Formica Antonina; 118 Nicolosi Antonina of Giarre, of Nicolosi Angelo and Lo Vetere Chiara; 171 Napoli Leonardo, «Genitori ignoti». O is ruled and left blank on the facing page before P opens. Image 124. Container wQ8JgQe, read 11 October 2026. 1859 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOTRA, NOT SIMONE: **4 NICOTRA ROSARIA, Giarre, FILANDARA, figlia di NICOTRA GIUSEPPE e COCO CARMELA, died 6 January 1859**. Read at full resolution off an IIIF crop and unambiguous. AN EIGHTH NICOTRA HOUSEHOLD OF GIARRE — Giuseppe and Carmela Coco, who are NOT the Giuseppe Nicotra of Matrimoni 1820 atto 80, since that one married Rosa Cattabiano. The N section holds this single line and O below it is ruled and blank. Image 118. Container 5vxYyPO, read 11 October 2026. 1860 seven SEVEN N ENTRIES AND NOT ONE IS A NICOTRA: 20 Nicolosi Carmelo, 25 Nucifora Mariano, 97 Nocera Carmelo, 116 Nicolosi Antonio (of Nicolosi Angelo and Leotta Gaetana), 130 Nocera Francesco, 190 Nelson Carlo, 237 Napoli Sarro. The longest N section in the sweep, and it runs Nicolosi, Nucifora, Nocera, Nelson, Napoli — every neighbouring surname and not the one being looked for. Image 137. Container 0noNloA, read 11 October 2026. THE LAST YEAR OF THE SPAN: SIMONE NICOTRA, BORN ABOUT 1776, IS NOT IN ANY GIARRE DEATH TAVOLA FROM 1820 TO 1860. He would have been eighty-four. He died after 1860, or he died somewhere else. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890. M and N are adjacent so MUSUMECI is read in the same view. 22 September 2026 · two registers, one man, two birthplaces

The same man is «of S. Giovanni» here and «of Giarre» there

Giarre's marriage Tavola for 1844 holds the wedding of the Dottor Don himself — atto 54, 19 August 1844: Nicotra D.r D. Alfio of Giarre, son of Nicotra D. Giuseppe and Caltabiano D. Gioachina, marrying Consoli D. Antonina. They are the couple whose Salvatore appears in the birth index in 1846 and again in 1848.

Six years earlier, Riposto's marriage Tavola records atto 15, 23 April 1838: Nicotra D. Alfio, son of fu D. Giuseppe and D. Gioachina Cattabiano, marrying Ligresti D. Angela. The same two parents. It is one man, widowed and remarried — not two namesakes, which is what this archive had written down while it had only one of the acts.

Giarre, Matrimoni 1844, atto 54 — Nicotra D.r D. Alfio
Giarre, Matrimoni 1844, the annual Tavola, atto 54 — Archivio di Stato di Catania (Antenati an_ua68872, image 162). «Nicotra D.r D. Alfio — Giarre — Nicotra D. Giuseppe / Caltabiano D. Gioachina» marrying «Consoli D. Antonina — Consoli D. Biaggio…», 19 August. Those two parents are the same pair Riposto wrote for its Don Alfio six years earlier, which is what joins the two acts into one man.

And the two registers give him two different birthplaces. Riposto's clerk wrote his patria as «S. Giovanni». Giarre's wrote «Giarre». San Giovanni Montebello is a frazione of Giarre — so both are true, and the difference is only which name the clerk reached for.

That is the third reading, documented, in this family's own surname. It does not prove anything about Giovanni Nicotra. It proves the thing his case needs to be possible: that a man of this district can be «nato a Giarre» in one register and entered under a frazione's name in another, and that a reader who trusts one word will look in the wrong book.
