Mascali

The town Etna swallowed whole in 1928 — and, ninety years before that, the comune where Maria Nicotra was born on a December night in 1875.

21 September 2026 · a comune this archive had never opened

Fourteen years were read in the wrong town

Maria Nicotra is the woman at generation four — Salvatore Mazza 's wife, buried at Nudgee, and the mother of the man who brought the name to Queensland. The family tree says she was born at Piedimonte Etneo. This archive read fourteen consecutive Piedimonte birth indexes, 1870 to 1883, looking for her, and the Nicotra are in them the whole time and never produce her.

The explanation was six words in an act nobody had opened. Her parents' marriage — Piedimonte, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20 — puts Giovanni Nicotra «domiciliato e residente a MASCALI» and Venera Cassaniti «qui domiciliata». A wife went to her husband's comune. The children were registered here.

Mascali, Nati 1875, atto 144 — the birth of Maria Nicotra
The witnesses are Gaetano Cardillo and Salvatore Leo, both thirty, both lavoranti, and neither could write.

She died at Brisbane in 1963 aged eighty-eight, which this date fits exactly. The tree's «Piedimonte Etneo» is her mother's town, not hers — and the correction is on her own page and the corrections list, beside what the tree says, because this archive does not overwrite what it was given.

Nine years of births read, and only one Nicotra household

Having found her, the obvious question was whether her father's household was here too — because if it was, his own birth should be. Every surviving birth Tavola from 1839 to 1848 was read at the N section, every entry, each one checked into the next letter before anything was written down. 1844 does not exist in this series at all, and 1842 is torn, its M-to-P run on the lost side.

The answer is that Rosario Nicotra's household was not at Mascali in the 1840s. The only Nicotra here in the whole decade is Alfio Nicotra and Carmela Sudieri, who appear in 1840, 1842 and 1847. Giovanni's own certificate says he was born at Giarre, and the search moved there.

YearN entriesWhat is there
1839 none whole Tavola read to «Fine» — A B C E F G L M P R S T V Z. M runs into P and there is no N heading anywhere in the table — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1840 three NICOTRA VENERA, atto 33, 11 May — NICOTRA ALFIO / SUDIERI CARMELA. Also 39 Nicolosi Mariangela and 16 Nicolosi Leonardo, neither a Nicotra — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1841 one the one N entry is NICOLOSI Salvadore, atto 83, of Nicolosi Francesco and Mercurio Francesca. Alphabet M N O P R S T V Z, in order — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1842 two NICOTRA GIUSEPPE, atto 20, 19 May 1842 — NICOTRA ALFIO / SUDARI CARMELA. THE JUNCTION SWEEP MISSED THIS ENTIRELY and the archive published «the only Nicotra here is 1840 and 1847». Also Neri Salvadore, 31 May — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1843 empty N heading written and left blank, and O beneath it, between the M section and P. The volume is water-damaged but the headings are legible — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1844 no volume MASCALI HAS NO 1844. Not in this series and not in any other: the Catania deposit runs 1843 then 1845 across Nati, Morti, Matrimoni, Nati esposti, Matrimoni processetti and the memorandum, and the ark and segnatura counters step by exactly one across the gap (an_ua70313/16777 to an_ua70314/16778), so the year was never deposited rather than lost from the listing. Verified against a whole listing on 21 September: 498 results, 498 distinct arks, facets agreeing. Giarre has 1844; Mascali does not. THERE IS NOTHING HERE TO READ, which is the opposite of an outstanding year, and the births negative for 1839-1848 is complete without it.
1845 one the one N entry is NICOLOSI Giovanna; O beneath it holds 51 Oliveri Salvadore — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1846 empty N heading written and left blank between the M section and an O holding 81 Oliveri Leonardo — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1847 two NICOTRA MARIA, atto 69 — NICOTRA ALFIO / SUDIERI CARMELA. Also 3 Nicolosi Domenico. Alphabet L M N O P R S T V, in order — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1848 one the one N entry is NERI Antonia, of Neri Leonardo and Borzì Maria. Not a Nicotra — RE-READ WHOLE 7 October 2026, first heading to last, because the junction method is not safe at this comune
1873 five FIVE N ENTRIES AND THREE OF THEM ARE NICOTRA — and one is the family's own. Read 9 October 2026, container wE72Q9W, folio 56. Nicotra Giovanni 31 (paternità Giuseppe), Neri Giuseppe 46 (Salvatore), Nicotra Orazio 83 (ALFIO), Nicolosi Angelo 124 (Giuseppe), and NICOTRA VENERA 145 (GIOVANNI). The index carries a paternità column, which is what made act 145 worth fetching, and the act proves the household: see the Mascali page. An ALFIO fathering a child at Mascali in 1873 is noted and not joined — Alfio is the Giarre and Riposto name this archive has been following, and a shared forename is not a join.
1874 two TWO N ENTRIES AND NO CHILD OF GIOVANNI'S. Neri Francesco 26 (paternità Domenico) and NICOTRA MARIA 47, 28 March, paternità GAETANO — a different household, and a NAMESAKE TRAP worth stating plainly: there are now TWO Maria Nicotras born at Mascali in the mid-1870s, this one of Gaetano in 1874 and the archive's own of Giovanni on 8 December 1875. Anyone searching the surname and the decade will meet both. The absence of a child of Giovanni's in 1874 is expected rather than a gap: Venera was born in December 1873 and Maria in December 1875. Container w68j9AQ, folio 63.
1876 five FIVE N ENTRIES, ONE NICOTRA, AND IT IS NOT GIOVANNI'S — on arithmetic rather than on a reading. Neri Giuseppa 25, NICOTRA GIUSEPPA 87, Nicolosi Mariano, Nicolosi Rosario 146, Neri Lucia 120. THIS YEAR'S INDEX HAS NO PATERNITÀ COLUMN, so the father cannot be had from it; but act 87 of about 180 falls near July, and Maria was born to Giovanni on 8 December 1875, so a sibling in July 1876 is not possible. Recorded as excluded by date and not by document. Container 5gKnx4N, folio 70.
1877 three THREE N ENTRIES, TWO OF THEM NICOTRA, AND THE ONE I READ IS GAETANO'S. Nicotra Mariano 4, NICOTRA ROSARIA 8, Nucifora Mariano 132. No paternità column again, so act 8 was fetched: «è comparso GAETANO NICOTRA, di anni 43, lavorante, domiciliato in Mascali ... del dì sette del corrente mese, nella casa posta in NUNZIATA ... da CARMELA CAVALLARO di lui moglie ... a cui dà il nome di ROSARIA» — born 7 January 1877. That is the same Gaetano who fathered Maria in 1874, and it is a fifteenth household, not Giovanni's. ACT 4, NICOTRA MARIANO, IS STILL UNREAD and is the open question in this year. Container LpAxl61, folio 66; act 8 read off image 6, which is image 7's paired exposure with the DUPLICATA card moved.

All nine years were re-read whole on 7 October 2026, and the re-read found a child. They had been cleared by checking the N section into the next letter, which assumes the sections are in order — and at Mascali they are not. Read first heading to last, 1842 holds Nicotra Giuseppe, atto 20, born 19 May to the same Alfio and Carmela Sudieri, and the junction sweep had never seen that N section at all. The household has three children here, not two. The negative itself survives — there is still no Rosario in any of the nine years — but it is a read negative now rather than a provisional one.

22 September 2026 · eight marriage years, read whole

The alphabet is not in alphabetical order

Mascali's marriage Tavole were swept next, because the marriage index names both spouses, all four parents and the comune each came from — one row would have carried a whole generation. Eight years, 1835 to 1847. No Nicotra in any of them.

What the sweep turned up instead is a caution. The 1847 clerk wrote his sections in the order C, then N, then M. 1841 and 1835 put V before S. These are not slips in one volume; they are how this office worked.

So at Mascali, «the alphabet runs M straight into P» proves nothing. The N may be sitting three headings earlier. The only safe reading of a Mascali index is the whole table, first heading to «Fine» — which is how all eight years below were read, and which is why they can be trusted.

Mascali, Matrimoni 1847 — the Tavola's sections run C, then N, then M
Mascali, Matrimoni 1847, the annual Tavola — Archivio di Stato di Catania (Antenati an_ua70173, image 23). Read down the headings: C (Currnaci, Costa), then N (Neri Leonardo, atto 8), then M (Maccarrone). The N sits before the M. This is the page that cost nine Mascali birth years their certainty — a reading that clears a year by checking M into the next letter cannot work here.
YearN entriesWhat is there
1820 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. The whole Tavola read heading to heading and closed with «Fine»: C, G, M, P, R, S, T, V, Z. The register's own closing line says «atti di matrimonio numero venticinque» and twenty-five acts are present, so the table is whole and not a fragment. Container w992969, images 54-56, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not appear under N.
1821 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. Four headings only — B, C, M, T — closed with «Fine». The register's closing line says «atti di matrimonio n° undici» and eleven acts are present. The smallest marriage year in the decade. Container wlG7G22, images 25-26, read 11 October 2026. Act 11 is Tomarchio Leonardo x NICIFORA Vincenza, a Nicifora BRIDE, which the index files under T and not under N — the standing reason this sweep can only ever find grooms. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1822 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. B, C, G, M, P, R, S, T, V, closed with «Fine». The register's closing line says «atti di matrimonio numero sedici» and sixteen acts are present. The index numbers run out of sequence on the second page (15 and 16 interleaved among 7-13) but every section is continuous and no heading is missing. Container 57PKPmX, images 35-36, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1823 none NO N SECTION AT ALL — and the junction is the important one: the Tavola runs M then straight to P with nothing between. A, B, C, F, G, M, P, R, S, T, Z, eleven headings. The register's closing line says «atti di matrimonio numero ventiquattro» and twenty-four acts are present. Container wXrJr7v, images 51-53, read 11 October 2026. READ WHOLE, first heading to last, because Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and a junction negative is worthless here. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1824 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICIFORA, NOT A NICOTRA. Act 22: «NICIFORA Leonardo / Cattabiano Orazia, patria Mascali, Nicifora Antonino / Cicala Carmela — Cattabiano Giuseppe / Birban Carmela, 2 Giugno». The whole Tavola: B, C, D, F, G, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, Z. The register's closing line says «atti di solenne promessa di matrimonio numero trentuno» and thirty-one acts are present. Container w68l8zb, images 65-67, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1825 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICIFORA, NOT A NICOTRA — but the row carries a Nicotra. Act 17: «NICIFORA Mariano / Cardillo Leonarda, patria Mascali e Giarre, Nicifora Alfio / NICOTRA MARIA — Cardillo Giuseppe / Coco Agata, 25 Luglio 1825». The groom's MOTHER is a Nicotra of the generation above Rosario (born c. 1800), so she was born by about 1785; she is not attached to anyone here, because a shared surname in one town is not a link. The whole Tavola: A, B, C, F, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V, Z. The register's closing line says «atti di matrimonio numero trentuno» and thirty-one acts are present. Container wRGbGWQ, images 65-67, read 11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1826 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. B, C, G, M, P, R, closed with «Fine». The register's closing line says «atti di matrimonio numero quindici» and fifteen acts are present across the two pages, which is how this year is known to be whole rather than half-read. Container 0A4p4mg, images 33-34, read 10-11 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1827 one ONE N ENTRY AND IT IS A NICOLOSI, NOT A NICOTRA. Act 10: «NICOLOSI Salvadore / Finocchiaro Venera, patria Mascali, Nicolosi Venerando / Angeli Orazia — Finocchiaro Ignazio / Grasso Rosa, 2 Luglio 1827». AND THE N SECTION SITS AFTER THE P: this clerk's headings run C, F, G, M, P, N, R, T, V. A reader who stopped at the M-P junction would have recorded this year as having no N at all. Container 0Jb9beG, images 42-43, read 10 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1828 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. C, D, G, L, M, P, R, T, V, closed with «Fine» — eighteen acts. The M section ends the first opening and P opens the second, so the junction was read across the page turn rather than assumed. Container 0Jb9brG, images 42-43, read 10 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1829 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. C, G, M, P, R, S — six headings. The register's closing line says «atti numero quindici» and fifteen acts are present. Container 0ZJeJRa, images 33-34, read 10 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname.
1830 two TWO N ENTRIES AND BOTH ARE NUCIFORA — Nucifora Mariano act 12, Nucifora Alfio 24. No Nicotra. Container LqJxJdq, folios 54-55, read 10 October 2026. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not appear under N. Read whole, heading by heading — Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and these volumes prove it again: 1831 runs G, L, M, Z, N, P and 1830 runs M, N, P, V, S, T, V.
1831 one A NICOTRA GROOM AT MASCALI — the first in any Mascali marriage Tavola. Act 18: «NICOTRA ALFIO / SUDIERI CARMELA, patria MASCALI, Nicotra Giuseppe / Pennisi Caterina — Sudieri Filippo / Grasso Giuseppa, 3 Nov 1831». It is the only N entry in the year. HIS PATRIA IS MASCALI, NOT GIARRE, and his parents are GIUSEPPE NICOTRA and CATERINA PENNISI — so he is NOT a brother of Rosario, whose parents are Simone Nicotra and Marianna Musumeci and who was born at Giarre. What it proves is that a Nicotra family was already settled at Mascali by about 1805, two generations before Giovanni. Container LPRYRDW, folio 44.
1832 unread OPENED AND NOT SAFELY READ. The archive flags this volume «Faded Document» and the flag is earned: the Tavola at folios 27-28 is legible only in patches. B and C are clear at the start and R, S, V and «Fine» at the end, with one or two headings between them that cannot be called. NO N SECTION WAS SEEN — and that is not the same as there being none, which is why this row stays unread rather than becoming a negative. Container wO4M42Z. A re-read at full width, or the Catania duplicate if one exists, is what this year needs.
1833 unread OPENED AND NOT SAFELY READ, for the same reason as 1832: the archive flags it «Faded Document». B, C, F, G and L are discernible at folio 25 and a tail with «Fine» at folio 26, and between them the hand is too faint to call. NO N SECTION WAS SEEN, and no negative is recorded from it. Container LapjpWD.
1834 none NO N SECTION AT ALL. The Tavola runs B, C, G, L, M, S, T across folios 35-36 and there is no N heading in it. Container 0ZJeJmp.
1835 none the whole Tavola read A to Z — A, C, D, G, M, V, S, V again, Z. No N section anywhere in it
1836 none whole Tavola: A, B, C, D, G, L, M, M, P, T. No N section
1837 none whole Tavola, ending in «Fine»: C, E, F, G, L, M, R, S, T. No N section
1838 none whole Tavola: B, C, G, L, M, S, T, V. The alphabet jumps M straight to S
1839 none whole Tavola: A, C, G, M, P, S, T, V. No N section
1840 one the one N entry is NICOLOSI Francesco × Mercurio Francesca, atto 10, 2 June 1840 — not a Nicotra at all
1841 none whole Tavola under its printed heading «Tavola Alfabetica annuale della solenne promessa pell'anno 1841»: A, C, G, L, M, P, P, V, S, T, Z. No N
1842 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION. The whole Tavola runs C, G, L, M, P, R, S, T, V, Z — ten headings, read across three openings, and no N among them. Container 5vx2xeq, folios 122-124. The archive flags this volume TORN PAGE(S). Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not show. READ WHOLE, first heading to last, because Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and a junction negative is worthless here.
1843 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION. B, C, G, M, P, R, S, T, V. Container 5vx2xzy, folios 31-32. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not show. READ WHOLE, first heading to last, because Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and a junction negative is worthless here.
1845 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION. A, C, D, F, G, L, M, P, R, S, V, Z — twelve headings and no N. Container 57PKPqo, folios 161-163. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not show. READ WHOLE, first heading to last, because Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and a junction negative is worthless here.
1846 none Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day. NO N SECTION. A, B, C, F, G, M, P, R, S, V, Z. Container LzE2EnG, folios 81-83. Indexed by the GROOM'S surname, so a Nicotra bride would not show. READ WHOLE, first heading to last, because Mascali's sections are not in alphabetical order and a junction negative is worthless here.
1847 one the one N entry is NERI Leonardo × Borzì Maria, atto 8 — his parents written NERI Domenico and Antonia Fraggia. Not a Nicotra. AND THE N SECTION SITS BEFORE THE M: this clerk's headings run C, N, M

Two things in that table are worth stopping at. The civil registration runs 1820 to 1893 and there is no 1844 — a hole in every series at once, not a gap in one. And the volumes held at Palermo are not civil registration: they are riveli, household returns made to the Sicilian parliament, and the earliest is 1616. That is a century before Piedimonte's earliest and the oldest source of any kind in this archive. The first volume is now open, and what it is matters more than what is in it — below.

22 September 2026 · Palermo, Tribunale del Real Patrimonio, Mascali 1616

Two centuries older than anything else here, and it has an index

The riveli di beni e di anime are household returns made to the Sicilian parliament — who lived in the house, and what they owned. The 1616 volume runs to 546 images, and this archive expected to have to read all of them.

It does not. The book opens with an alphabetical name index, and the letter tabs are cut into the fore-edge of the pages — B, C, D, E, F, G, I, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V, still there four hundred years on. Every line gives a name and a folio.

And then the catch, which decides how this gets searched. The index is ordered by forename, not by surname. Its A pages run Antonino lo Xuto, Antonio Barbagallo, Adamo Mangano, Aloisia lo Castro, Agata Grasso, Alfio Musumeci. So the N tab leads to the Natales and the Nicolòs, not to the Nicotra, and looking for a surname means reading the index through. That is about twenty images instead of five hundred and forty-six, which is the difference between an errand and a wall.

The surnames on a single opening are already the ones the 1840s registers are full of — Barbagallo, Musumeci, Finocchiaro, Grasso, Gagliano, Pinnisi, Strano, Arcidiacono. That says the population of this town is continuous across two hundred years. It does not draw a line of descent and nothing here ever will: there is no bridge between 1616 and 1875. What the riveli can answer is whether a surname was in Mascali before the registers begin, which is a smaller question honestly asked. Work list, row 182 →

Seven Nicotra deaths, and the one act that was worth fetching

Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito were both alive and unmarked by «fu» in October 1872, in an act that writes fu for a witness two lines above. So they died after it — and an Italian death act names the deceased's parents, which would reach a generation this archive has never touched.

72 of Mascali's 74 death years are read, and they hold seven Nicotra. Not one is Rosario. And no Murabito appears in any M section that could be read — which matters, because an Italian index lists a married woman under her maiden surname, so Venera would be there and not under N.

Only three of the nine years print a paternità column — the father's name beside the death, which is the whole reason the series was opened. The other six give a surname, a forename and a register number, so every hit costs an act on top of the sweep.

Two were worth testing and both were tested. A Nicotra Giuseppe died in 1879, and this town had a Giuseppe born to Alfio and Carmela Sudieri on 19 May 1842. The act kills it: atto 21 of 1879 is a child «di anno uno» — one year old — son of Venero Nicotra, bracciale, and Venera Sorbello.

And that is the better find. Venero Nicotra is a day-labourer at Mascali — Rosario's own condition, stated in the 1872 act — and the first labouring Nicotra household found in this town. The Alfio of 1840–47 is a different household; Giarre's Dottor Don is gentry. Nothing attaches Venero to Rosario, and nothing should until an act does.

The other candidate, a Nicotra Maria of 1876, cannot be read at all: her act lies under the archive's own black cover sheet, and there is no duplicate of that year at Catania. A wall, not an absence.

YearN entriesWhat is there
1820 none The alphabet runs ...Mariano, Maria, ODOARDO, Pagano with NO N SECTION AT ALL. 126 entries, A-Z, read whole. The final page notes that foundlings without a surname are filed under their FORENAME, which is why bare names appear in the run. D = no Daidone. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890; the D section was read in the same pass. MASCALI'S SECTIONS ARE NOT RELIABLY ALPHABETICAL, so every Tavola here was read heading to heading rather than at the M-to-P junction.
1821 none No N surname at all: ...Musumeci, OLIVERI, Puglisi. 87 entries ending «Fine». D holds no Daidone. One Nicotra as a MOTHER: atto 2, Amico Pasquale, of Amico Domenico and NICOTRA ANGELA.
1822 two NERI Francesco and NERI Giovanna. 99 entries with explicit letter headings — and the register's closing line declares «atti di Morte Novantanove 99», so the Tavola is provably complete. D = DUCA Paolo only.
1823 one NERI Giuseppe. 109 entries ending «Fine». D = «Domenica», a projetta filed under her forename, only.
1824 one NERI Leonarda. 120 entries ending «FINE». NO D SECTION AT ALL — C runs straight to E.
1825 none NO N HEADING — M runs straight to P. 111 entries ending «FINE». NO D SECTION either: C runs straight to F.
1826 three NICOLOSI Filippo(106), NICOLOSI Salvadore(118), NERI Leonardo(136). 196 acts by the closing line. The left column becomes the ACT NUMBER from this year. D = DUCA x2 and DRANE.
1827 one NUCIFARO Fiorenza(33) only — verified by native-scale crop because Nucifora/Nicolosi/Nicotra is the known look-alike trap; it reads «Nu-», parents Nucifaro Salvatore and Leotta Francesca. D = DOMENICO x2, DUCA x2.
1828 three NICOLOSI Maria(78), NUCIFORA Antonino(99), NICOLOSI Orazia(111) — both look-alike surnames in one Tavola and neither is Nicotra. 112 acts. NO D SECTION: C runs straight to G. BUT THE YEAR CARRIES THE FIRST DAIDONE TRACE AT MASCALI, as a mother: atto 103, Bassi Margarita, of BASSI DOMENICO and DAJDONE SANTA. And the first Nicotra trace: atto 49, Tomarchio Caterina, of TOMARCHIO CARMELO and NICOTRA MARIA.
1829 three NERI Maria(18), NUCIFORA Giuseppe(66), NOTO Catarina(73). 87 acts by the closing line and the Tavola ends at 87 — the cross-check passes. D = DOMENICO x2 and DIVERSI.
1830 one NATALE Leonardo(24), a foundling. Ends «Fine». NO D SECTION: C runs straight to F.
1831 unread NOT ESTABLISHED, AND DELIBERATELY NOT A NEGATIVE. Antenati stamps these plates «Faded Document» and the ink is gone in places. Read at native 2319px and by region crops the Tavola gives G, L, M then P, R, S, T — and the run from M into P, exactly where an N section would sit, holds one entry (no. 74) whose surname cannot be resolved. NO DUPLICATE DEPOSIT EXISTS: Mascali has a single Morti deposit for 1831-1833, and the only other Mascali series is 1714-1752 Riveli, not register copies.
1832 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight into P. D = DOMENICO/DOMINICI x2.
1833 one NUCIFORA Giuseppa(107). NO D SECTION: C runs straight to F.
1834 two NUCIFORA Mariano(39), NUCIFORA Maria(54). D = DUCA Venera only.
1835 one NUCIFORA Matteo(76). D = DUCA Lorenzo and DAVID Giuseppe, a foundling.
1836 three NICOLOSI Maria(17), NUCIFORA Giuseppe(50), NUNZIATA Leonardo(67). D = DI PIETRO and DI LORENZO.
1837 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight into P. D = DIO Vittoria, a foundling surname, only.
1838 two NUCIFORA Giuseppe(67), NUNZIATA Leonardo(71). Ends «Fine». The archive labels these plates «Water Damage» but the Tavola reads. D = DOMENICO Antonino only. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890; the D section was read in the same pass. 1840 two NICOLOSI Angela(73), NICOLOSI Maria(105). «Water Damage» label. D = DUCA x2.
1841 one NICOLOSI Sebastiana(51). THIS VOLUME GIVES EACH LETTER GENEROUS SPACE — E and F are ruled and blank — so a letter's contents are unambiguous. AND ITS D SECTION HOLDS THE FIRST DAIDONE DECEDENT FOUND ANYWHERE IN THIS PROJECT: atto 6, «Dajdone Angela», whose act reads «ANGELA DAJDONE DI ANNI CINQUANTA, moglie di Giacomo Leotta, NATA IN MASCALI, bracciatrice, FIGLIA DEL FU GIUSEPPE», the mother's name unknown to the declarants. Also atto 32, Musmeci Filippo, possidente, son of Musmeci Antonino and NICOTRA ALFIA. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890; the D section was read in the same pass.
1844 no volume NO MORTI VOLUME EXISTS FOR 1844 in any Mascali series — the year was never deposited, which antenati-coverage.tsv has recorded since September.
1845 empty N RULED AND BLANK, and D RULED AND BLANK too — a clean double negative in a year where the clerk wrote both headings.
1846 one NICOLOSI Nicolina(50), parents unknown. D RULED AND BLANK.
1847 empty N RULED AND BLANK. NO D SECTION: C runs straight to E. Two supplement containers for this year (LDmlN6O, wE7jgo7) are not yet checked.
1848 three NERI Antonia(48), NICOLOSI Giovanni(84) — AND NICOTRA SALVADORE(118), THE FIRST NICOTRA DECEDENT AT MASCALI. Verified by native-scale crop: «NICOTRA SALVADORE | GIARRE | bracciale | NICOTRA ALFIO / PAPPALARDO ROSA | 11 Dicembre 1848». The patria column gives GIARRE, and Alfio x Rosa Pappalardo is one of the nine Nicotra households the Giarre Morti sweep catalogued. GIARRE NICOTRAS DO DIE AT MASCALI. «Water Damage» label. D = D'URSO x2 and DI BELLA.
1849 two NERI Leonarda(64), NICOLOSI Francesco(61). D = two foundling entries.
1850 one NATOLI Mariano(42). D = one foundling, D'URSO Francesco.
1851 five NICOLOSI Francesca(47), NUCIFORA Rosario(77), NERI Isabella(80), NICOLOSI Salvadore(92) — AND NICOTRA ANGELA(108), «bracc.a, NICOTRA ALFIO / PREVITERA SANTA, 30 Dicembre». Verified by crop, and the same page spells NICOLOSI twice, so the -tr- is unambiguous. Note 1848's Nicotra Salvadore was son of Alfio x PAPPALARDO ROSA: either two men called Alfio Nicotra or one who remarried, NOT RESOLVED. D RULED BLANK.

1855 two NICOLETTI Carmelo, NERI Domenico(50). D = D'URSO x2.
1856 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight to O. D = DIANA D. Leonardo only. The year also carries BASSI D.a FRANCESCA, «Civile» (atto 34), another of the gentry Bassi. Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890; the D section was read in the same pass.

Swept for SIMONE NICOTRA (born about 1776) and for his wife MARIANNA, written DAIDONE in 1820 and MUSUMECI in 1890; the D section was read in the same pass.
1860 one NERI Angela(76). NO D SECTION: C runs straight to E.
1861 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight to P. D = DUCA Salvadore only.
1862 two NICOLOSI Leonardo(13) AND NICOTRA CARMELA(48), «d., GIOVANNI, 3 Luglio» — Mascali-born, daughter of Giovanni Nicotra. The two sit two lines apart in the same hand, one spelt NICOLOSI and one NICOTRA, which is the best control the record can give. D = DE SALVO x2 and DI LORENZO.
1863 one NUCIFORA Vincenza(52). D = DOMINICI and D'URSO.
1864 one NERI Orazio(100). D = DI STEFANO only.
1865 none NO N SECTION — M runs straight to P. D = DAMIANI Filippo and DI STEFANO Gaetano.
1866 none NO N SECTION BECAUSE THERE IS NO SURNAME ORDER AT ALL. From 1866 these volumes carry an «Indice annuale» ORDERED BY FORENAME, so the letter headings are first-name initials and neither a D page nor an N page exists. The surname column of every entry under every letter was read instead — about 96 of them, ending «Fine» — and holds no Nicotra and no Daidone.
1867 none Forename-ordered «Indice annuale», so no N section exists. All ~110 surnames read, ending «Fine». No Nicotra, no Daidone.
1868 none Forename-ordered «Indice annuale», so no N section exists — but the surname column holds a NICOTRA. Under C, for the forename Carmela: «Carmela NICOTRA — registro 28», verified by native-scale crop, sitting between Caterina Gangemi(25) and Carmela Giordina(31). Atto 55 is NICOLOSI Michele, not Nicotra. No Daidone.
1869 none Forename-ordered «Indice annuale», so no N section exists — and it carries THE BEST FIND OF THE MASCALI SWEEP. Under A: «Alfio NICOTRA — 63», crisp and unambiguous between Antonino Contarino(55) and Antonio Russo(70). THE ACT, read in the original: ALFIO NICOTRA died 13 May 1869 AGED SEVENTY-THREE, «NATO IN GIARRE», «FIGLIO DEL FU GIUSEPPE e della fu CATERINA [surname illegible], MORTA IN GIARRE». That Alfio is the father named in the 1848 and 1851 acts above. CAUTION: in the ACT BODY the surname cannot be separated from NICOLOSI, though the index is unambiguous; the index reading is what is recorded. PART OF THIS INDEX IS UNDER A BLACK ARCHIVE MASK and is NOT claimed exhaustive.
1870 none Forename-ordered «Indice annuale», so no N section exists. Volume labelled «DUPLICATA». All surnames read, ending «Fine». No Nicotra, no Daidone.
1871 none Forename-ordered «Indice annuale», so no N section exists. All surnames read, ending «Fine». No Nicotra, no Daidone.
1872 one BACK TO SURNAME ORDER (Cognome e Nome | Data | PATERNITA), so the N section returns — and holds exactly one entry: «80. NICOTRA Maria [or Maddalena] | 12 Ottobre 1872 | paternità GAETANO». The forename is not fully resolved between the two exposures; surname, date and father are clear. A PHYSICAL DUPLICATA CARD lies across this opening and MOVES BETWEEN EXPOSURES — covering the left page in one and the right in the next — so reading both gives the whole opening, which is this archive's own recorded rule and the only reason 1872 is readable. D = DE SALVO, D'ANGELO, DI LORENZO.
1873 one NICOLOSI Giuseppe, 23 March, paternità Leonardo. THIS YEAR'S INDEX CARRIES A PATERNITÀ COLUMN — the father's name beside each death — which is what would reach generation eight
1874 two both NUCIFORA — Maddalena, 2 April, fu Giuseppe; Nunzia, 31 May, Carmelo. Paternità column present. The M section read in the same view holds NO MURABITO
1875 three NICOTRA ORAZIA, registro 107 — the first Nicotra death here. Also Nucifora Giuseppe 58, Neri Salvatore 85. NO paternità column this year
1876 two NICOTRA MARIA, registro 14. Also Nicolosi Rosario 7. No paternità column — ACT FETCHED AND NOT READABLE: atto 14 sits under the archive's own black cover sheet. Only «Nicotra» in the margin and fragments of the right edge survive. A WALL, NOT AN ABSENCE
1877 one NERI Domenico 86 only. The whole M section read in the same view — Mastro, Mauro, Musumeci, Minoto, Magauto, Messina, Marano, Mangeri, Militano — NO MURABITO
1878 one NUCIFORA Alfio, fu Giacomo, 44. Paternità column present. M read entry by entry — NO MURABITO
1879 three NICOTRA GIUSEPPE, registro 21. Also Nucifora Leonardo 2, Nicolosi Giuseppe 18. No paternità column, and the early M is behind a cover sheet — ACT FETCHED 8 Oct 2026 AND THE CANDIDATE IS DEAD: atto 21, 4 April 1879, «è morto Giuseppe Nicotra, DI ANNO UNO», son of VENERO NICOTRA, bracciale, and VENERA SORBELLO, both of Mascali. An infant born about 1878, NOT the Giuseppe born 19 May 1842
1880 five TWO NICOTRA — SALVATORE registro 63 and LEONARDO registro 95. Also Neri Maria 39, Nicolosi Salvatore 48, Nucifora Mariano 105. M read in the same view: NO MURABITO
1881 five TWO NICOTRA — NUNZIATO registro 2 and SALVATORE registro 14. Also Neri Salvatore 16, Neri Maria 37, Nucifora Maria 61, and then P opens at Patanè Rosa 5. THE EARLY M IS NOW READ AND HOLDS NO MURABITO. This row used to end «the early M is behind a cover sheet», which left the half of the index that matters for Venera unexamined — an Italian death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. On 9 October 2026 the DUPLICATA card turned out to be MOVED BETWEEN EXPOSURES: image 61 of container LPR9gW8 carries it on the right-hand page and image 62 on the left, so the two together give the whole opening. The early M reads Mugherà Antonina 1, Mugherà Pietro 3, Musumeci Giuseppe 41, Musumeci Giuseppa 45, Marano Giovanni 46, Musumeci Rosa 50, Musumeci Rosaria 59, Mauro Venerando 60, Magauto Leonarda 65, Marino Emilia 66, Mauro Maria Crocifissa 74, Mangano Rosaria 75, Marano Giuseppe 80, and the late M adds Marano Leonardo 85, Miceli Leonardo 109, Musumeci Leonarda 117, Mattej Gemma 1.P.S. NOT ONE MURABITO IN EITHER HALF.
1882 three THREE N ENTRIES, NONE OF THEM NICOTRA — Neri Maria registro 75, Nucifora Filippo 82, Nicolosi Enna 106, then P opens at Patanè Maria 24. The M section on the same page holds no MURABITO either, which is the half that matters for Venera: an Italian death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Read 9 October 2026, container 0JbrlJG, folio 40. THIS YEAR WAS RECORDED AS UNREADABLE AND IT IS NOT. The archive's black DUPLICATA card covers half the opening — but the volume is PHOTOGRAPHED TWICE. Image 51 carries the card on the right-hand page and image 52 carries it on the left, so between the two every column is clear, and the earlier reading had looked at one image only. The card is not damage; it is the archive identifying its duplicate copy, and it is moved between exposures precisely so that nothing is lost. The volume's back cover declares PAG. ONDULATE, PAG. MACCHIATA, PAG. TRASPARENTE, TUTTO IL VOLUME, IMPOSSIBILE FARE DI MEGLIO — the condition is real, and the index is legible anyway. The old note also said a second copy of the year exists. It does not: only 1847, 1849, 1855 and 1891 hold two Mascali Morti volumes.
1883 three TWO NICOTRA DEATHS, BOTH ACTS FETCHED, AND NEITHER IS GIOVANNI'S CHILD. N holds NICOTRA ANGELA registro 10, Neri Leonardo 48, NICOTRA MARIA registro 123, and the M section holds NO MURABITO — Mauro five times, Muscolino twice, Musumeci, Marano — which is the half that matters for Venera, filed under her maiden surname. ACT 10, read in the original: «è morta ANGELA NICOTRA di MESI OTTO ... nata in Mascali da VENERO, bracciale, e da SEBASTIANA SORBELLO, braccialiera», contrada Costaporane, 23 January 1883. Eight months old, so born about May 1882. ACT 123: «è morta MARIA NICOTRA di ANNI DUE ... nata in Mascali da GIUSEPPE, bracciale, e da VENERA COCO, braccialiera», contrada Cava, 16 December 1883. Two years old, so born about 1881. THIS IS WHY THE ACTS WERE FETCHED. The index gave two Nicotra girls of the right names and roughly the right ages, and Giovanni's own children include an ANGELA the export dates to 1882 and a MARIA born 1875. Both would have been plausible on the index alone. Neither is his: the parents are two other labouring Nicotra households of Mascali. The archive's Angela and Maria are untouched, and the Maria who sailed to Sydney in 1962 is still the only Maria of that household. Container 5KMjn4P; index folio 42 across images 50 and 51, acts at images 5 and 43.
1884 three NO NICOTRA AND NO MURABITO. N holds Nicolosi Venera 38, Neri Leonardo 54, Neri Sebastiana 63. The M section is Macarrone, Marano, Musumeci, Mercurio and nothing else — no Murabito. Read 9 October 2026, container LydA2Eq, folio 42, off image 39, which is the paired exposure of image 40 with the DUPLICATA card on the other page.
1885 five FIVE N ENTRIES, TWO OF THEM NICOTRA — Nicotra Maria registro 49, Nicotra Caterina 54, Nicolosi Salvatore 81, Neri Vincenzo 92, Nicolosi Venera 94. Neither Nicotra act is fetched yet and neither can be attributed from the index, which carries no paternità column. BUT THE M SECTION IS WHY THIS YEAR MATTERS: registro 4, MURABITO BARTOLO — THE FIRST MURABITO THIS ARCHIVE HAS FOUND AT MASCALI IN ANY SERIES. Every Murabito until now has been at Giarre. The act was fetched: «è morto BARTOLO MURABITO, di anni CENTOSEI, bracciale, residente in Mascali, NATO IN MASCALI, da fu PAOLO ... VEDOVO DI FRANCESCA PARISI», 13 January 1885, declared by the becchino and Carmelo Patanè. A LABOURING MURABITO, BORN AT MASCALI, SON OF A PAOLO MURABITO, widower. That is the social condition and the town of the woman this archive cannot find, and it is the first Murabito household at Mascali rather than Giarre. IT IS NOT A JOIN and nothing here names Venera. The declared age of 106 should not be believed as written — this archive's own audit says ages run one to four years out as a matter of routine and a centenarian is the classic inflation — but even at eighty or ninety he is the right generation to be her father or her uncle, and his father PAOLO is a generation above that. Container 0M9yEM7, index folio 42 off images 49 and 50, act at image 3.
1886 two Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Nicotra Mariano registro 10, Neri Domenico 92. AND A SECOND MURABITO AT MASCALI: MURABITO SALVATORE registro 78, the year after Bartolo. Container wbryY2X, folio 42 across images 49 and 50.
1887 two Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Nucifora Mariano 19, Nicolosi Giovanni 30. NO NICOTRA and no Murabito. Container wRGnXv3, folio 46.
1888 four Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. NICOTRA GAETANO FU SALVATORE registro 61, with Nucifora Carmela fu Leonardo 36, Nicolosi Maria di Alfio 60, Nicolosi Maria di Domenico 97. This index gives a paternità inside the name, which is how Gaetano's father is known to be a SALVATORE. No Murabito. Container 0A4YxWW, folio 42.
1889 one Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Nicolosi Leonardo 58 and nothing else. No Nicotra, no Murabito. Container LPR98Kd, folio 42 off image 58.
1890 five ROSARIO NICOTRA IS HERE. SIX N ENTRIES AND THE FIRST OF THEM ENDS THE SEARCH. Index: NICOTRA ROSARIO FU SIMONE registro 35, Nicolosi Giuseppa di Giuseppe 54, Nani Rosa d'Ignoti 110, Nicolosi Leonardo di Domenico 120, Neri Anna de Alfio 153, Nucifora Giuseppe di Lorenzo 6 (parte 2a). No Murabito in M. ACT 35, read in the original off image 16 — the paired exposure, because the DUPLICATA card covers the whole act on image 15: «è morto NICOTRA ROSARIO, di anni NOVANTA CIRCA, CONTADINO, residente in Mascali, NATO IN GIARRE, da fu SIMONE, e da fu MUSUMECI MARIANNA, MARITO DI MURABITO VENERA», died at nine in the morning of 4 April 1890 in contrada Montargi, declared by Copani Mariano, contadino, and the becchino Lo Pò. FIVE THINGS AT ONCE. He is named with HIS WIFE — «marito di MURABITO VENERA» — which is the couple together in a document for the first time since their son's marriage act of 1872. He was BORN AT GIARRE, which is where Giovanni said he was born and is the likeliest reason Giovanni said it. He is about NINETY, so born about 1800. He is a CONTADINO at contrada Montargi. And he has PARENTS: SIMONE NICOTRA and MARIANNA MUSUMECI, both dead by 1890 — a seventh generation this archive did not have. «MARITO», NOT «VEDOVO». The register writes «vedovo» for a widower on the same pages. So VENERA MURABITO WAS STILL ALIVE ON 4 APRIL 1890, and her death is the next thing to find.
1891 two Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Nicolosi Sebastiana fu Venerando 2, Nicolosi Pietro di Giuseppe 53. No Nicotra, no Murabito. Container 5YGXyxE, folio 42.
1892 three Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. NICOTRA VENERA DI ANGELO registro 25 — a Venera, but a Nicotra by surname and daughter of an Angelo, so not Venera Murabito. With Nicolosi Giuseppe fu Angelo 98 and Neri Maria di Domenico 116. No Murabito. Container LeG9XVx, folio 46.
1893 five Read 9 October 2026 off a container banked the same day; M section checked for MURABITO as well as N for NICOTRA, because a death index files a married woman under her maiden surname. Neri Francesco di Domenico 58, Nucifora Caterina di Alfio 74, Nicolosi Giuseppa fu Domenico 76, Nicolosi Francesca fu Carmelo 83, Neri Palma di Leonardo 156. NO NICOTRA and no Murabito. Container 0JbrlQB, folio 42. THE LAST YEAR MASCALI HAS BEEN DIGITISED TO.

What is left here

  • The other six children of Giovanni Nicotra and Venera Cassaniti. The family's export names seven — Maria, Rosa, Venera, Nina, Angela, Rosario and Antonina — and two are placed: Venera, 12 December 1873, and Maria. 1876 and 1877 hold Nicotra entries whose indexes carry no paternità column, so they are read and unresolved, which is not the same as absent.
  • The deaths. Not opened here at all. Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito were both alive in October 1872 and no death has been sought for either, in any of the four towns. The marriages, by contrast, are now swept for 1835–1841 and 1847.
  • The riveli of 1616. Forty-six volumes at Palermo that this archive knows how to read — it has used the Piedimonte ones — and has not touched.
