Venera Nicotra
an ancestor of Mia and Rocco a record about them has been read from the family tree, unverified

Every relationship drawn here comes from the family tree, and not one of them has yet been proved by a record. That is the honest state of this archive for this person: the chart shows what Michael Mazza's tree asserts, and the colour tells you only whether anything at all has been read about the person at the other end. What is recorded

Nothing but a name and a place in the family. This person is known only because somebody else's record names them.

A register contradicts what is written above. The lines in this block are the family tree's account. 3 readings taken from the original acts disagree with it — what the registers say →

Where this comes from

All 8 of the relationships drawn above come from Michael Mazza's family tree, and none of them has been proved by a record this archive has read.

What a register says about this person, which the tree does not.

The first child of the 1872 marriage — BORN AT MASCALI ON 12 DECEMBER 1873, fourteen months after her parents' marriage, and named for her mother -- or for her father's mother Venera Murabito; both are Venera, so the custom points two ways and settles nothing on its own. The 1873 annual index of Mascali births carries a PATERNITA column and gives «Nicotra Venera, 12 Dicembre 1873, Giovanni». THE ACT ITSELF IS NOT YET OPENED, so the mother is inferred from the household and not read. Index entry only.

Birth date, birth hour and birthplace — BORN AT MASCALI ON 12 DECEMBER 1873 AT ONE IN THE AFTERNOON, in contrada NOCILLE, and registered the next day by her father in person. «è comparso GIOVANNI NICOTRA di ROSARIO d'anni ventisei di professione lavorante ... una Bambina di sesso feminile ... nata il giorno dodici del corrente mese alle ore tredici dalla di lui moglie VENERA CASSANITI fu GAETANO d'anni ventiquattro ... alla quale figlia dichiara di dare il nome di VENERA». She is the FIRST CHILD of the marriage of 7 October 1872, born fourteen months after it, and she is named VENERA — which on Sicilian custom is the paternal grandmother's name, and the paternal grandmother is VENERA MURABITO.

The naming custom, tested twice and fitting twice — THE ORDER OF THE DAUGHTERS IS WHAT SICILIAN CUSTOM PREDICTS, AND IT NAMES BOTH GRANDMOTHERS. First daughter for the paternal grandmother, second for the maternal. Giovanni Nicotra and Venera Cassaniti married on 7 October 1872 and their first two daughters are VENERA, born 12 December 1873, and MARIA, born 8 December 1875. The paternal grandmother is VENERA MURABITO and the maternal grandmother is MARIA CURRENTI. Both fit, in the right order, and neither name was chosen by this archive. The same argument already runs for the sons: the export gives the couple a Rosario and the marriage act names the groom's father ROSARIO. THREE FOR THREE IS CUSTOM AND NOT PROOF — a Venera and a Maria are two of the commonest names in these registers — but it is independent of the acts and it points the same way.

Where the two disagree, the chart above still draws the tree as it stands. This archive does not silently rewrite what it was given — the acts are here.
