THE TOP OF THE SICILIAN SPINE, AND HE HAS BEEN FILED ON THE WRONG MAN. His son's birth act names him in his own words; his son is entered as «Rosario Mazza DI MARIANO» in the 1873 birth of Salvatore and again in the 1871 marriage. THE NAMESAKE TRAP, AND THIS ARCHIVE WALKED INTO IT: the family tree holds a «Mariano Mazza» who is the son of the ORAZIO MAZZA BORN 1883, himself a son of Rosario -- a twentieth-century man who cannot have fathered a boy in 1845. The 1845 record was attached to that slug and sat on his person page until 20 September. He is filed here as «Mariano Mazza (b. c. 1809)» so no parent link can ever resolve to the wrong one. Not in the family tree. ALIVE ON 16 APRIL 1871, AND THE DOCUMENT SAYS SO IN A PRINTED FIELD. The publication certificate for his son Rosario's marriage reads «figlio del VIVENTE MARIANO, professione bracciante, residente anche ivi» -- not the absence of a «fu» but the positive word, written into a form that has a blank for exactly this. He was about sixty-two, still a bracciante, still living at Piedimonte Etneo. TWENTY-SIX YEARS AFTER his own appearance at the comune house to declare Rosario's birth, and the second document in which he speaks for himself rather than being named by a descendant.
