DOMENICO DONATO'S ELDER BROTHER, and NOT THE MICHELE DONATO OF THIS ARCHIVE'S SPINE. Two men of the name stand three feet apart in these records: this one, born about 1814 at Messina, and his nephew born at Scilla on 3 October 1855 and named for him. Keep them apart. His act is what dates the grandfather — «FIGLIO DI Candeloro Donato», not «del fu», so CANDELORO WAS STILL ALIVE in August 1845 — and it is his mother's surname, PALADINO, that the 1844 Tavola then matched to make the brothers brothers.
